Poured 12oz bottle into glass. 7% abv.

Appearance- Pours a dark amber/red. 2 finger white head slow to dissipate. Good clarity.

Smell- Grapefruit, toasty malt

Taste- Sweet bready malt with caramel. Grapefruit and pine come around in heavy flavor until leaving a dry finish with a good bit of bitterness.

Mouthfeel- Medium heavy in body, ample carbonation.

Overall- A hop lovers red ale here. Plenty of hops beginning with the smell. Good use of malt/hops in the taste. Similar to an IPA in taste but definitely a red ale by looks.

Brewed with Two-row pale, cara-red, blackprinz, and medium crystal malts. Hopped with Cascades, Columbus, and Chinook (dry hopped with cascades and chinook). Fermented with chico yeast.
OG=17.2P, ABV=7.0%

Pours out to a slightly hazy medium amber, forming a modest off yellow head with very good retention and good lacing. Nose is of mild C hops, (not brash bold and bright like the bottle says), some crystal malts, slightly fruity fruity, distant toffee, strawberries. The mouthfeel is not as big as I was expecting for 7.0% ABV beer, but is sufficient, maybe perhaps because it is pretty crisp and a little lower on the carbonation (2.0 or so). Hops are biting up front in their acidity, not overwhelming though, then a decent malt backbone, finishing with an earthy and spicy medium firm bitterness. Burps are a little piney. No off flavors.

A solid yet average/good west coast style red.

Pours more brownish than reddish with less than a finger of head. The nose is a little malty and a little bready. Some caramel flavor and trends more toward the malty than the hoppy. The body was slightly hearty for the style.

Flying Fish says the hops are Northwest "Brash" with notes of citrus. But I find them to roll off the sides of the tongue very nicely, making for a very smooth red ale. This is a very smooth, malty ale. For me an excellent session brew.

Try 1.

A - A darker amber body with an off-white two-finger cap. The cap fell slowly and left sheets of lace inside the glass. Buy 2 for good looking red.

S A bit subtle but must warm. It's caramel malt mixed with pine and grapefruit. Some toasted, nutty notes with brown sugar and herbs.

T - Follows smell but more ample. The malt first, then mid-palate of pine resin, lots of lemons, and grapefruit. Ice tea like. Some toffee emerges with toasted, honey roast nuts. Finishes in a brown tea of sugar, herbs, pine, and grapefruit.

F - Medium body with good carbonation. The finish had decent earthy bitterness.

OK maybe this is a buy 2.

**FROM OLD NOTES, 02/12/12: Aroma is Vegetable. Light Brown Color. Medium Head. Taste is Vegetable, unpleasant aftertaste. Alcohol is too strong for a red ale.**

BBD 7/11/15. Pours a clear amber with a solid garnet cast. Outstanding head volume, world class lacing and retention.

Somewhat light nose of toasted malt and hops (pine and grapefruit).

Heavy light body with a smooth texture. Superb carbonation with a nice effervescent burst in the middle and a solid finely bubbled prickly finished.

Outstanding flavor profile. It is intense, fairly complex, and very well balanced. It's base is a solid biscuit with heavy caramel notes that are somewhat toasted. Over this is a mild bitterness which has hop flavor elements of pine, grapefruit and an herbal spicy character. The finish is a slow fade of hop flavor that becomes more spicy as it lingers.

incredible beer in my IPA Spiegalau glass

pours a dark amber, burnt orange to the point of it being brown/red with a thick white head.

smells like an IPA, citrus hops galore. maybe a little bit of smoke/coffee as well.

taste is more malty and finishes bitter. some smoky pine to it.

goes down smooth and leaves a bitter aftertaste.

there is something about this beer i don't particularly like but i can't put my finger on it. it looks good, smells good and tastes good but leaves something to be desired. it isn't a bad beer by any means. not what i was

expecting when i read "hoppy red ale" because the taste is not very hoppy. maybe this beer is closer to a red/brown ale. reminds me of a hoppy red bitter ale.

edited: about 4 hours after my initial review on my 4th. the taste is pretty damn good and it goes down smooth. i would totally buy another 6er of this. it's no Nugget Nectar but it's good.

edited a few days later, again: im just finishing up my 6 pack and can't believe how good this is. the head doesn't subside and the taste is very good. goes down smooth and tastes great. the fact that is brewed within 40 miles of me makes it even better. i don't often buy the same beer twice (because i like trying out new beers) but this is worthy of another purchase.

L: Dark Amber. Very small head, no lacing

S: Carmel, mild bread, malty and little citrus hops.

T: Light pine, orange, carmel.

F: Medium body, noticeable bitterness, lightly carbonated.

O: I hate Amber ales, especially the hoppy ones. I always dislike whatever ambers I try. This one was an extra from a trade. This is surprisingly balanced and flavorful.
