This beer was served on tap at Twisted Rail Brewing Company in Canandaigua, New York. It arrived in a flare house tasting glass, showing a flamed rust coloring. A half finger tall head of creamy, syrupy khaki colored foam was noted to top the beverage, and this showed decent retention. Lacing appeared in stickily spotted fashion. No haze or sediment was noted, and carbonation appeared to be active, with tight aggregates of bubble submerged and gripping the class. The aroma came with heavily burnt and buttered popcorn diacetyls, sweet nectary and lightly citric hoppiness, gently toasted pale malts with hints of caramel grain, steeped lemon breakfast tea, sticky green grassy resins, lemon balm herbal waxiness, sunscreen chemical bite, lactic creaminess, dusty ale yeastiness, starchy yam sugars, and old burlap. The flavor blend included candy corn sugariness, wet mustard greens, powdery pale and amber graininess, aluminum, biting lemon zest, spicy floral, earthen, and lightly citric hoppiness, melty plastics, cloth and paper towel, leek vegetals, and massive spicy wash of black pepper, sage, and parsley. The body was lightly medium, and the carbonation tickled the palate actively. Each sip gave okay slurp, smack, cream, and froth, with nicer finishing, and refreshing, bubbly pop. The mouth was mouth was left cooled, wetted, and refreshing, with eventual creeping dryness of tannins. The abv was appropriate, and the beer disappeared without a fight.
Overall, the most memorable aspect of this beer was its easy of drinkability, and how crisply refreshing it was. This was enjoyed after a trip through their Belgian and stouter offerings, serving as a transition point in our day. If we had to pin a label on it, this would be their spring and summer lawnmower, picnic sharable. It doesn’t kill you with hoppiness, which many have come to expect from American pales stylistically, but rather, keeps things to a lighter balance. This can be a positive, or a negative, depending on your outlook. You find yourself wanting it less in this cold weather, but it becomes easy to see how it would quench your hankering should it be a bit warmer and sunnier. If you go into it expecting anything more, you might be disappointed, so try and keep your thoughts to the session beer side, if you can.
