In 1920, with the passing of the Prohibition Act, a dry wind blew over the land. And snuffed out the legal production of alcohol. But beneath the law existed an underworld. Wherein a handful of plucky renegades ducked the tavern-smashers. And kept the embers of beer brewing aglow. There, in the shadows, they inextinguishably remained. Until 1933. When the intemperate tyrants of the temperate movement finally were overthrown. Irreverent Red IPA. A rules-flouting India Pale Ale features a citrusy aroma, sweet middle, and dry finish croon. Happy days are here again.

My first brew from Warped Wing - Being a local I have tried many other Dayton beers and keep coming back to this one:

(L) With an SRM around 20 this is a pretty murky Red Ale with just a bit of wheat beer like cloudiness. Not much head to speak of and very little residual lacing.
(S) Initial smell is a mild west-coast hop aroma, Cascade and Centennial seem the closest profiles. Some sweeter malt qualities quickly follow on but it doesn’t pop with a bright Citra-like hop aroma like some traditional IPAs.
(T) Savory but mild hop flavors up front with considerable bitterness that fades quickly into a nice rich malty undercurrent. There is a dark roasted malt snap that indicates a rich base and loads of 60L and 80L roasts. The alcohol is imperceptible at a little over 6%.
(F) Seems a bit under carbonated which I quite frankly appreciate. Lends itself to the murky dark redness of the brew. A higher carbonation would seem out of place with this ale.

Overall – My current local favorite! I truly look forward to having one on occasion. It’s readily available in most craft beer stops in the area. I appreciate the originality and concept behind this beer. It’s a unique beer and a welcome departure from the ubiquitous West Coast IPA that everyone is trying to produce. Warped Wing went a different way with this one and I think it turned brilliantly.

I liked this a lot, probably my favorite of theirs.

Solid, dark dark red, with a small but fluffy beige head and good lacing.

I get Werthers and caramel on the nose, with a surprising level of hop dankness. The pungent hops seem to only come through when fresh on draft, as the canned version is less dank and more smooth.

Pleasantly this all translates in the flavor nicely, and the caramel butterscotch notes do a nice job of rounding out the flavors. The caramel notes are a little smokey in fact.

Good thing it's one of their canned offerings, grabbed a few to go on the way back to Akron.

Poured into an Allagash tulip.

12/17/15 printed on the bottom of the can.

Medium dark brown with rust and dense honey colors; not quite murky. Carbonation seemed weak so I livened the pour and managed about one finger of khaki foam besting the rim, dropping to soapy retention and lace.

Pre-pour the aroma right after opening the can seemed hollow but nice; dank, juicy hops with a touch of caramel and biscuit. In the glass the hop aromas are diminished and manifest as earthy more than I prefer. There are hints of perfume. The malts are both doughy and dusty. If nothing else the aroma isn't so thin after all.

Gah, as much as I like low carbonation this is just too dull; the lack of bubbly makes the overall feel sluggish, raking gritty hop residuals across the palate. Caramel is at the fore, padded with floral hops, and very mild hints of pine, cedar, spruce and a cocoa subtlety. A bitterness moves in on the finish; it is more orange rind than aspirin, so that's ok. Every 2 or 3 drinks I catch an odd, out of place vegetal flavor. Ugh, if I hold a large swig in my mouth and retro-hale there entirety of the taste is riddled with the semblance of being in the presence of used, luke warm dish water and an industrial garbage disposal with a worn out motor.

The worst part is perhaps that Irreverent grows wearisome a third of the way in. The characteristics this beer exhibits as a fresh pour are what I would expect from the last quarter of a glass that was forgot about during a lengthy bar conversation.

Poured into a pint it has a deep, dark mahogany color. Slight whitish head. The IBU is 84, but has a much maltier taste. It is very smooth, sweet, and finishes dry. It could use a little more carbonation. Many Red IPAs leave the mouth dry, this one doesn't.

Warped Wing is growing, and I'm glad to have discovered them early.

Bought a mixed 16 oz can four pack, which included the new Irreverent Red IPA. Poured contents of beer in a standard Imperial Pint Glass.

Appearance: reddish-brown in color, thin head and thin lace head left over.
Smell carried a roasted aroma you might get from a brown ale, with Pine and hope floral nuances as well.
Taste: Hoppy to start, misleading you to think of a standard IPA; however roasted caramelized malt flavor came to the front shortly after first drink.
Mouthfeel: Thick and surgary from the malt

Overall: Easy to drink, well rounded beer. But more along the lines of a brown ale with more hops added to give it that IPA turn.

16oz can served in a tapered pint glass - narrow top opening but mostly straight wall. Not sure how else to describe the glass.

Appearance: Clear dark coppery red. Thin than head. Thick sheets of persistent lacing.

Smell: Pine and hoppy citrus. Both stronger fresh after pouring, and then not as strong as the beer warmed up.

Taste: Hoppy pine and citrus from start to finish. Some caramelized malt in the middle for balance to temper the bitterness from the hops. Lingering bitter finish. Nicely balanced for a IPA.

Mouthfeel: Quite sticky on the teeth. Good carbonation.

Overall / Drinkability: A good simple IPA. Easily drinkable and good with a wide range of food (had with a wide range of hors d'oeuvres and I would not have minded another 16oz can. Not an amazing IPA in aroma or taste, but it had a good depth of flavor, was good to look at, and again, was easily drinkable. Irreverent? Hardly. Good and middle of the pack? Yes. I think this beer was trying to be an Arrogant Bastard as it had aspects of it, but it wasn't Arrogant Bastard. Still worth picking up and enjoying though.

They call it a Red IPA. Alit has the IBU, but that's it. Not your typical IPA. It's a bit malty. Getting hints of chocolate and burnt caramel. Hoppiness goes ok with it, balances well. Just not my choice in an IPA.
