Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Battle Axe IPA is a unique example of the style, focused on smooth hop flavors and aroma, while avoiding the harsh bitterness found so often in today’s IPAs. Rather than competing for the most bitter beer available, we chose to leverage voluminous late hop additions in the boil to produce a highly drinkable IPA with strong hop flavors, fresh citrus hop aroma and a profound drinkability that makes it a great beer to pair with food.

A- Tallboy into a goblet with a hazy and deep golden orange body. A half inch head rises with a thick and frothy texture. Good head retention with wide sheets of lace after the first sip and webs cascading down below that.

S- The aroma is sweet oranges, general citrus hops and pineapple with a suggestion of a rather bold sweetness throughout. Very slight fruity tropical hints with time.

T- Opens up from the aroma and changes quite a bit for me on the palate. Tropical fruit nectar, bubble gum and dankness lead things off with grapefruit, orange, floral, herbal and grassy hops beyond that. Somewhat sweet but the kind that makes it feel fruity instead of contrasting caramel. Ends up kind of juicy overall. Somewhat oniony but it fits in.

MF- Puffy and fluffy light-medium thickness. The carbonation is very high and the beer just feels foamy at times. Ends with a light herbal bitterness.

A somewhat faint aroma leads into a flavor which balances the hop spectrum nicely with citrus, floral, tropical and herbal hops all present.

To me, this essentially taste like a clone of Stoneface IPA. Not to say that it is bad, just not unique or different. The only major difference is that the bitterness lingers more in Battleaxe than in Stonefaces's IPA. Given that Battle Axe is almost $2 more per 4 pack than Stoneface, it's a poor value.

From a can canned a little more than a week ago, purchased directly from the taproom. A little lighter in color than expected. A very interesting hoppy combination that I cannot recall having experienced before. I'd say pine, but I am not confident; unlike most IPAs I have tried recently, so a welcome change. I would have liked a little more carbonation. My third offering from this brewery, I would rate it in the middle of the three I have tried.

I have to admit that I had not heard of either this brewery, or by extension, their beers, but we recently got distribution of their CANs & so I was quick to snap one up for The CANQuest (tm).

From the CAN: "Brewed and Packaged in Londonderry, NH".

I Crack!ed open yet another massive 16-fl. oz. craft CAN & CANmenced a slow, gentle Glug into the awaiting glass. An in-glass swirl raised just over two fingers of dense, foamy, tawny head with great retention that left loads of lacing in its wake. Color was Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with NE-quality clarity, calling forth The Gelt Gang of Midas, Croesus & Mammon for a taste. Nose was at once grapefruit citrusy, slightly piney with a strong smell of dank! Mmm. This is what I expect when I delve into an AIPA, not tropical fruits and/or haze. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but big for this style, more towards a DIPA. The taste had a pleasant citrusy bitterness of grapefruit, lemon and orange along with a light peach, light pine and light dank. Mmm. This is exactly the sort of thing that I have grown to expect in the style & it was nice to find an example in this age of hazebros and tropical fruit AIPAs. Finish was dry, but on the margins of semi-dry. Given the Notes, they really acCANplished what they set out to produce. Nicely done!

Sorry, but with all the success with stouts, why are Kelsen wasting time with this crappy Battle Axe IPA? Looks like beer, has a really odd smell, mostly nothing there within the mouth, taste kinda sucks, and voila, it's gone. No lingering flavors and thanks God cause they suck, sorry to be so harsh, but this beer deserves it. Stick to your stouts, kill this loser and move on.

[Note: This is an old can, so the review is likely biased to a lower score than it deserves]

16 oz can dated 10/4/16 (6 months old) Given to me by a friend, probably from back of fridge. He said he really enjoyed this one.

Pours a clear light orange color with plenty of effervescence and a one finger pillowy head that settles down to a half.

Aroma is mild but tropical fruit. I get pineapple the strongest. No citrus and no grass as others have reported - could be the age of the can.

Taste is bland or watery. Was expecting something a lot different. I know they are particularly trying to have it be low bitterness (which it is), but its almost like there's something missing in the beer. Aftertaste is a mild alcohol burn too, which I don't like for a standard IPA.

As for feel it is smooth and creamy, though "thin" feeling. I guess one positive is that it is "drinkable", meaning it goes down easy like a session ale, but there is too much malt (and the alcohol burn) for it to qualify there. Quite an odd duck.

I can do without this one. Glad I didn't buy four of these.
