500ml bottle bought from The Vintage, Antrim...

Poured a dark mahogany brown colour. Light mocha head poured tight, thick and foamy then faded quite quickly to light layer. No real carbonation to speak about... some faint lacing...

Aroma - Strong treacle / dark brown sugar notes, lightly roasted malts, rich dark fruits (raisins, dates, prunes), Christmas cake / fruit loaf notes, light pepperiness, toasted bread, light rum notes, some peaty smokiness coming through..

Taste – Toasted bready malts, rich spicy alcohol soaked fruits (raisins, prunes, currents, oranges), fruit cake, nice peppery hop bitterness cuts through the sweet malts, toffee / brown sugar sweetness, rich nutty notes, faint aniseed traces...

Feel - Rich, smooth and creamy... medium body... pretty drinkable at 4.8% but maybe a bit rich to drink more than a couple...

Overall - An excellent Scottish ale... exactly as i would expect - rich & malty with a slight hint of peaty smoke... Well worth a try...

Purchased in June 2007, part of a mix-pack that I found at the Wallace Monument near Stirling, Scotland.

Poured into a pint class, a very clear reddish-brown colour (heavy on the red) with a half-inch frothy head. The head fades quickly to a film. Really nice looking Scottish ale.

Aroma is very malty caramel with some light toasty notes.

Taste is very malty, but backed up by a mild, pleasant hop twang. Mild metallic notes while it's still cold (maybe too cold). Smooth, oily mouthfeel and somewhat sweet aftertaste, which is emphasized when it's warmer.

According to the brewery's website, this beer is "brewed to commemorate the 700th anniversary of [the Stirling Bridge] battle, Stirling Brig is a classic, rich, dark ale with a creamy head and epitomises the traditional Scottish 80/-".
A bottle-conditioned ale, the BB date: 01/04/06

A: pours a nice and bright ruby hue, with a beige-coloured, effervescent and thick foamy beer head with good retention.
S: smelling of chewy and "raw" grains mixed of barleys and oats, with a not-so-sweet raisin-like aroma, intensive and slightly-intoxicating smell of overly ripe dark fruits but dissipating quickly, on top of Scottish ale's typical (exotic)smoked maltiness.
T: mouthful of roasted barley and roasted nuts upfront on the palate, full-flavoured but surprisingly light-bodied; followed by unstopping flow of woody and nutty flavour which is also tartly fruity and lightly sweet, gathering force especially on the sides of the tongue... the aftertaste has more roasted/smoked malt and nutty overtone backed by a refreshing, fruity hop presence but kept to the minimum level; clean and short finish.
M: very light-textured but full of flavours, the mouthfeel is balanced, albeit a bit thin especially in the end of tasting.
D: a nice beer for sure, though I'd think this beer on cask could be more tasty... this same brewery's 80/- Ale is more tasty and full-bodied, though.
