16oz pint at the Underground, rounding out the triumvirate of new offerings from this evolving Saskatoon brewpub one province over.
This beer appears a rather densely cloudy, muddled apricot colour, with one fat finger of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly off-white head, which leaves a few specks of paramecia lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.
It smells of sharp spices right out of the glass - clove, black pepper, and a more earthy coriander - banana chips, edgy yeast, semi-sweet wheat grain, and faint leafy hops. Where be the grapefruit? The taste is (ah, there it is) pithy candied grapefruit, placid wheat malt, sweet coriander, a sedate earthy yeastiness, banana pudding, and a bit of spicy leafy hops.
The carbonation is a bit peppy, but hardly overly so, the body medium-light in weight, and plainly smooth, with a touch of airy creaminess. It finishes off-dry, the wheat and coriander outlasting anything grapefruity, excepting that of the lingering hops.
I suppose I could rag on this offering for not being replete with big grapefruit notes, but I'd rather point out the decent, if simply rendered hefe here, one sweetly kissed by the popular beer flavour du jour instead. Another enjoyable enough brew, one which surely deserves to play to great acclaim in the sunshine of Saskatchewan patios this summer.
