Notes: BREAKFAST HERO IMPERIAL DOUGHNUT STOUT

As the inaugural edition of our Cellar Reserve program, Breakfast Hero brings a pastry stout to the breakfast table. We packed the grain bill with multiple base malts, chocolate malt, plenty of oats, and fresh HERO Doughnuts (an awesome local doughnut bakery). We then maxed our fermentor out with an extremely generous amount of Vermont Maple syrup, a pound of Madagascar vanilla beans, and freshly roasted Brazilian coffee beans from our local pals at SEEDS coffee to tie this imperial stout together in perfect breakfast harmony.

This beer is brimming with notes of syrupy covered pancakes, melty bakers chocolate, subtle vanilla cream, and roasty hazelnut coffee. All of the above backing this lactose creamy and chewy body which makes this the perfect pairing with any breakfast dish.

When you bring this beer to the table, you are the Breakfast Hero.

On draft into a tulip glass.

Pour was a deep still black, not much head.

Aromas of Foldgers, roasted malt, char, and maple, chocolate.

Taste follows with a bitter black coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, some sweetness creeps in but it’s not cloying.

Easy drinking, pretty medium body drinks well for 8.5%.

Definitely worth a try.

Nice Lacing and very viscous body. Not much going on by way of initial smell....improves with temperature. Pleasant maple/coffee/dough/hints of vanilla and chocolate. TrimTab is putting out the best beer within AL.

A: Pours opaque dark, dark brown with no light coming through.

S: I get the coffee and maple syrup on the nose. There's some kind of acidity to the aroma. Very nice.

T: The maple syrup hits hard, which is something any other stout I've tried brewed with maple syrup hasn't quite accomplished. The coffee is also prominent. What a wonderful combination! I'm not sure if glazed doughnuts were used in the brewing process, as the can advertises, but I can faintly get that flavor. I'm sure that's difficult to pull off for any brewery. Some other side flavors I get are chocolate and caramel. The beer is sweet but not overly so.

M: It goes down very smoothly with a silky consistency. It's about medium-thick bodied with light carb.

O: This is a very pleasant brew from Trimtab. All of the advertised flavors come through gloriously! And even with 8.5% abv, you'd think it's a milkshake.

Initial taste was strong copper upon my first pour. After letting it settle in and rest it had a thin head. Smell is smooth with a tremendous amount of maple syrup, and coffee. Halfway through I pick up a smooth dark roasted velvet coffee, maple syrup and honey. The copper has subsided to an extent. It leaves a nice coating on the back of your throat to remind what you’re drinking.

This remind of everything that’s right with eating a traditional English breakfast in the U.K. to cut through that salty, and savory breakfast. I would pair it with that anyway of the week. Overall it’s phenomenal and so rich. It’s a one and done for me for the day, but so enjoyable once it opens up.

16 ounce undated can, assumed fresh. Received from a trade at end of July.

Pours just on the brown side of black, thick latte foam of head. Just a couple spots of lace. The nose is diner coffee and light maple.
Taste is rich espresso, chocolate, vanilla, light maple syrup. Overall sweetness, malted milk and cereal grains. No cloying throughout the beer.
Medium body, mouthfeel. Creamy.

Poured from a 16 ounce can into a St Bernardus goblet.
4/4/4/4.5/4
Pours sticky, black, and flat. No head.
Smells mostly bitter, like diner coffee and hops, with an undercurrent of sweeter malt.
Tastes supersweet, but fortunately the coffee comes through strongly which, combined with the roast, keeps the beer from being too cloying. I'm not sure why they felt maple syrup was needed in this beer, but the flavor is fine, even if the added sugar is less welcome.
Very thick and sticky. Not sure if this is a good thing. I think it is.
A fine stout, if overly sweet, pretty punchy and one dimensional, but I enjoyed it.

Got in a BIF from KMitch. 16 ounce can into snifter, no can dating. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, nutty medium roast coffee, maple syrup, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, cream, biscuit dough, and toasted dark/brown bread; with light notes of molasses, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, char, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malts, coffee, maple syrup, vanilla, doughnuts, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, nutty medium roast coffee, maple syrup, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, cream, biscuit dough, and toasted dark/brown bread; with light notes of molasses, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, char, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/grassy/spicy hop and roast/char bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, nutty medium roast coffee, maple syrup, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, cream, biscuit dough, toasted dark/brown bread, light molasses/smoke/char, herbal, grass, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, coffee, maple syrup, vanilla, doughnuts, and light earthy hop flavors; with a nice roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; and no cloying, acrid, astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering hop/roast bitterness. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and lightly slick/sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is fantastic. Minimal warming alcohol for 8.5%. Overall this is fantastic dessert imperial stout! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, coffee, maple syrup, vanilla, doughnuts, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV, with the mellowly bitter/drying finish. Outstandingly rich/well rounded imperial stout malt complexity, with great flavoring presence/balance, and solid earthy hops against sweetness. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

16oz can from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 4.99. No canning date. Served in a Founders snifter. Enjoyed 11/15/18.

Pours black with a tall cap of fluffy tan foam. A thin veneer remains, along with a full collar and a few generous streaks of lace.

Smells of coffee, maple, roasted malt and cooked sugar.

Bittersweet coffee and maple are immediately apparent in the flavor and remain the stars throughout. Charred malt, burnt caramel, some faint almost lactose-like sweetness, a little cake and a slight alcohol presence.

Smooth, full feel with gentle carbonation. The lingering, bittersweet aftertaste continues notes of coffee, maple and cooked milk sugar.

I haven’t tried a whole lot from TrimTab since they began Georgia distribution earlier this year but they do some mighty solid work. Breakfast Hero adds some nice sweetness to the ubiquitous imperial coffee stout. I’m not sure I get glazed donut here but it all works well together. Definitely worth a try, particularly for any of my fellow coffee stout fans.
