Notes: LIGHT VISIONS: HELIX RISING DDH HAZY DOUBLE IPA

For this new installment to our hazy IPA series, Light Visions Collection, we bring you Helix Rising.

We started with a complex grain bill consisting of clean Pilsner malt, copious amounts of sticky oats and a touch of flaked wheat to tie the body of this beer together. We fermented this hazy DIPA with a fruity expressive yeast and then pushed this beer to the limit with extreme Double Dry hop additions of fresh Chinook, Zythos, Simcoe and Simcoe Lupulin Powder.

This hazy DIPA has a deceiving drinkability for its high end ABV, boasts a silky body, and has an extremely layered complexity. It overflows with flavors and aromas of freshly juiced pineapple, honeydew melon, fruit cocktail and apricot purée, followed with just the right amount of sticky resin bitterness.

Appearance: Served up an opaque, matte-finish orange-gold body with a whitish, slim-sized head. Good lacing.

Smell: Cooked honey glazed rustic grains with bitter tangerine and grapefruit peelings and some spicy pine.

Taste: Raw, rustic graininess with some honeyish sweetness. Bitter citrus fruit character with peppery pine sap. Moderate bitterness. Dry, warming finish with a lingering taste of roux made with grist mill dust.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-low carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.

Overall: S'alright.

L - 2-finger dense, offwhite head stubbornly maintains its shape. Body is a near-opaque, slightly dirty yellow.

S - tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, mango. Yes!

T - juicy pineapple and tangerine. Earthy middle, with some sour lime, dirt, and booze creeping in. Moderate-low bitterness. Moderate-low sweetness. Moderate booziness.

F - medium-full body with appropriate carb.

O - about as refreshing as an 8% dipa can be.

Poured into a wine glass. It looked inviting with a very hazy bright yellow color with a thick white head. The aroma was medium-intensity with oranges, grapefruit, and a grassy/herbal note. The herbal notes were more prominent on the palate, providing a steady dank undercurrent that supported the citrus flavor. The flavors were less bright and a bit muddled. Fairly bitter but with a soft feel. A dry crackery malt backbone and a clean, dry finish.

Pours a dirty orange with frothy head. Strong citrus smells of grapefruit and mango. Tastes of dankness and hoppy bliss. Feels smooth with just enough bite. Overall a terrific beer with a great punch. One of the best DIPAs in Birmingham AL

Literally canned this morning, not even on shelves yet.

Pours a lightly pale, completely hazy golden yellow, flecked with an orange hue. A nice soft, white head of foam settles at about a half finger and falls back into the beer slowly and with small patterns of lace.

Tons of pineapple and hints of mango on the nose. A tad green still, but this one will bloom so nicely. A great piney hop presence balances perfectly, and the zythos comes out strong with subtle background aromas of tangerine and grapefruit.

I love when you can pick out particular hop characteristics in an IPA. Chinook hops really emerge in the flavors and mellow out the strong pineapple backbone. Medium spice intensity and a good balance of piney, pithy hops. As mentioned, this was canned today so I’d predict the hop intensity to mellow, but with a great pineapple, melon and overripe mango backbone it will come full circle really nicely.

Smooth, dank, medium carb. Soft mouthfeel and mildly warm finish. Super drinkable 8%, really excited with this Trimtab product. They continue to absolutely kill the Southern Beer game.
