AmEn! Halleluiah! No, this isn't gospel worship. This is a one-of-a-kind Barleywine that combines the best of the New World and the Old World into one delicious beer. It's not an American-style Barleywine or an English-style Barleywine. It's both. With a uniquely flavored English base malt coupled with American hops and yeast, we're putting a new twist on an old style. We hope you enjoy!

Cahoots AmEn! BBA American/English Barleywine, 11.1% ABV. Pours dark brown with a one-finger beige head that left no lacing. Aroma is caramel/toffee and malt. Flavor follows, some moleasses and bourbon, slightly sweet, faintly bitter. Decent mouthfeel, overall outstanding. Not your typical barleywine flavor, but I like it a lot. The BA listing says it's 93 IBU, but there's no way, this can't be over 30.

Poured a couple ounces at a self serve tap place at the outlet mall. Damn tasty. Plenty of honey and malt and barrel. A little thin but the flavors make up for that.

A mildly hazy muddy rusty copper color with a thin tan head. The aroma was modest with some caramel, toffee, and floral elements. I did not get much from the barrel in the nose. The taste was different - Vanilla and oak up front but also not overstated. There was a burnt caramel and toffee element that drove the finish. A floral English element as well. Bitter but more smooth and restrained in the English style. Full bodied. Nice.

12/7/17: 10 oz pour into chalice at Monk's Pub. Dark rose pour, minimal lacing head. Thin wine aroma. Wine predominates the taste, slight bourbon taste as well, somewhat sweet but mild. Medium mouth feel, easy drinking. Overall good offering.

Terribly good. Maybe a little lighter in feel than expected. On trap in a snifter at Red Arrow, Elmhurst.

2014 vintage; drank 8/21/14 on draft @ Fischman's.

Orange/red rust murkiness.

Minimal white head; no lace.

Caramel & honey nose.

Medium thick, flat mouthfeel.

Caramel & honey flavors; good not great due to the weirdly flat mouthfeel.

Do yourself a favor and don't chill this... cold, it's not bad, but it's also not good. It's tremendously unimpressive, like a cool glass of barrel-aged nothing. As it warms, it reveals itself to be a fair bit more compelling. The aroma is the high point, with roasted pineapple, pluot, and black tea with a hint of bergamot oil. It's not exactly what you might expect from a barrel-aged barleywine, but it's pretty pleasant at 60 degrees.

As my first beer from Cahoots, I was dismissive of them on my first sip, but once Amen started to show some nuance, I second guessed my judgement. With so many other solid beers coming out of Chicago, I don't think I would seek this out again, but I'm down to try a few other beers in their lineup to see what they're made of.
