In this day and age, there are seemingly infinite varieties of flavor compounds and aromatic properties available in the different breeds of hops that exist. Among them all, there is an undeniable “profile” that sticks out as most desirable by American IPA drinkers; that of the Citrusy hops of Washington and Oregon. “Citrus” is certainly not our only IPA… but it was our first, and we wanted to make a statement. We at Funk Brewing Company believe in balance, complexity, and artistic brewing instead of “extreme beers”. That’s why we sought out to synthesize a beer that was masterfully crafted to accentuate a massive American Citrus hop profile while retaining our standards for balance, and sophistication. Through various test batches, water profile manipulation, and uncommon hopping techniques, we found a way to offer you what we feel is the epitome of the American Citrus hop in a glass. The utilization of Citra, Simcoe, Mosaic, and an experimental hop we like to call “LemonBomb”, give “Citrus” huge flavors and aromas of grapefruit, blood orange, pine, passionfruit, mango, and pink guava, balanced by a clean malt bill of Belgium’s finest pilsner malt and our neutral American yeast. This will forever and always be our go-to IPA and we hope it becomes yours as well.

11/26/22 Next to our hotel while visiting Bethlehem.

Hazy good with a nice amount of white head.

Aroma is peach, lemon and tangerine.

Taste is sweet at first and fades into hoppy goodness. Lemon notes with a slight dankness (good).

Poured from a 16oz can into pint glass in September 2022. There was a batch #156 on the bottom of the can. I drank this about 3 months after purchase.

Appearance: Medium gold color with 2-finger white head. It is deep with a very hazy complexion. The head is very thick, and it lasts a few minutes, leaving a small covering. There is a large amount of lacing on the glass.

Smell: Strong aroma of pineapple and grapefruit, as well as some hops and pine. The aroma was moderately strong as soon as the can was opened. The fruit aromas are more prominent than the other aromas.

Taste: Nice balanced taste between the fruit (grapefruit and pineapple) and hops that is not overpowering. Also, some orange flavors. The sweetness and bitter edge are well-balanced. Has a very nice after-taste that lasts a moderate amount of time. Overall a nice balance and very drinkable.

Mouthfeel: Medium body. Also, moderate average alcohol, which matches the 6.1% listed on the can.

This is a very good IPA. It has a nice mix of citrus, hops, and other flavors, which makes it enjoyable. The overall balance is excellent. A dependable IPA for drinking anytime of the year. I will definitely buy this again.

16 ounce can poured into a tulip glass. Can says Drink Fresh, but provides no canning information.

L---Golden amber color. Opaque. Fluffy white head faded slowly and left beautiful lacing.

S---Wow, fruity as all hell. Citrus and tropical notes. Grapefruit, orange, mango.

T---Follows the nose closely.

F---Medium bodied with good carbonation.

O---A really nice one. Probably better suited to summertime than christmastime.

16 fl oz pull-tab can nabbed at a beer store in New Orleans, Louisiana for $3.49 USD plus tax. Batch #11.

7.1% ABV. "India Pale Ale." "Ale brewed with grapefruit juice."

Can't say I taste any pine or blood orange, honestly, and it isn't as bitter as I'd have imagined a grapefruit juice brewed beer would be. Indeed, it's barely bitter at all and fails to really evoke grapefruit.

Citrusy? Sure, but less so than something like Ballast Point's Grapefruit Sculpin or Kern River's Citra. It isn't over the top on citrus flavour, and part of me wishes it was.

2-row, pale malt. Floral hop flavour.

I mean if your goal is to make a citrusy IPA, why pick Simcoe and Mosaic? Honestly? One can expect garlicky/oniony and maybe vague tropical character from Simcoe, and Mosaic brings a signature subtle blueberry flavour into the fold, but neither brings citrus to the table. I'd think one would start with Citra and maybe add Cascade, El Dorado, Galaxy, or similar to the fold if the goal is citrus. Or, like, brew with an actual citrus fruit (Yuzu, Blood Orange, hell even Szechuan pepper). But why did they think Simcoe and Mosaic of all varietals would contribute the citrusy flavours they're so clearly aiming for? I'm at a loss.

This won't forever and always be my go-to IPA, but if this is their flagship offering I don't think they'll be around long enough for it to be anybody's "forever" IPA.

"Ale brewed with grapefruit juice" screams GIMMICK, and I should've trusted my gut...this is mediocre. And overpriced, to boot...

Pours a hazy orange color with a light tan head that provides very nice lacing. The nose is a nice amalgamation of citrus aromas, including ripe tangerine, passion fruit, and a nice bit of lemon.

The taste is even better, with the tangerine flavor most prominent, but it makes room for the passion fruit and lemon flavors, and there’s also a nice malt flavor.

This is my first beer from these guys, and I can see why this is the flagship IPA - it’s a well-executed beer, IMHO, that delivers a lot of flavor.

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Batch #308

Orange amber colored body, with a touch of hazy appearances. Real nice fluffy white topped head, making an easy three to four fingers tall of height.

Real nice citrus soft orange of hop on the nose. Aroma manages a bit neutral malt base though, but not much else either. Orange quality comes out more juiced than spicy, sweet, oily, or anything really.

Palate is a real good simple pleasure. Real nice creamy mouthfeel, almost gives way to soft cake texture. Mid palate of juiced orange and a hair of spiced green herbal character. Deep full bodied finish, with rich malt texture and thick supportive backbone.

This is an IPA on a simple profile that is really heavily made better by a way better than average mouthfeel. Feels rich even when it isn't.
