Deep amber with a thin head which receded to a thinner layer but supplied ample carbonation
Caramel, burnt sugar and faint licorice and cocoa aromas - no hoppy brightness.
Sweet start with warming alcohol not disguised. Finish is slightly astringent and not all that bitter.
Fine carbonation creates a creamy mouthfeel
Definitely a solid beer.

12oz bottle served in a can glass. Batch 1788, 10/2017. No idea where I got this beer anymore, but it's been in my fridge for a long time.

Pours dark caramel with a big head. Smell is roasty, caramel and toffee, maybe some burnt toast.

Taste is...slightly burnt toffee, maybe with coffee in it -- and some kind of fruity streak. Moderate sweetness with a deep bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is moderately heavy, but surprisingly dry. Overall, I think this is pretty good.

This beer pours a murky amber into the glass. It smells like toffee and tastes similarly, the muddled brown sugar notes shining through. It's a fairly watery beer, though there is a nice little carbonation to it.

22oz bottle poured into a pint glass
A: Very dark brown with a one-finger head
S: Brandied cherries, caramel, malt, a hint of hops
T: Matches the nose. Cherries/brown sugar with some hops
M: Full-bodied, quite sweet
O: Fairly tasty but you've got to love that brown sugar/molasses taste as that's the primary finish

At the Zaftig tap room just around the corner from where son has hockey practice. This beer poured an opaque black with ecru head that is leaving a nice lace. The scent has pine like hop. The taste is heavy and boozy....great winter beer. Starts sweet then turns earthy with slight bitter finish. The Mouthfeel is fuller in body with smooth carbonation. Overall this is a solid beer....not for session ing however.

Enjoyed from the big bottle in a snifter. This FINE strong ale pours a dark brown mahogany with a light brown head of foam that calms to a thick ring and subtle layer with nice lacing. Nose of heavy citrus with grapefruit and pineapple, brown sugar, and moderately strong alcohol. Flavors surpass the nose with a nice blast of grapefruit and pineapple, light lemon, and brown sugar on all sides mixed with a light brandy note on the back featuring a touch of dark fruit. Mouth feel is lightly creamy but brisk with good carbonation that is not too heavy making for a smooth mouth feel that finishes wet, full, and bitter.

An excellent brew from an excellent brewery.

Cheers

This is the second of four Zaftig bombers I bought at Crafty Drafts in Ghana last Saturday. The first was a drain pour. This is better.

It has a little head (yea!) and even a little lingering carbonation and lacing. The aroma is that sickly darkness I expect from this nasty style, and not bad at all.

The taste is pretty good. It starts off sweet and slightly boozy and finishes bitter. There is a clear difference as it sits in your mouth - a redeeming quality.

Overall, I still cannot recommend this brewer. We shall see if this improves, but this still reminds me of some of my homebrews from the late 90's, which was pretty dicey.

Had this on-tap, on location at the brewery. I believe they claim this is the hoppiest beer they brew (at least at the time). It poured very dark brown, nearly black. The head and lacings were perfect, as par for every beer I've tried by these guys.

This definitely was hoppy. Strong hop flavor, enough to remind me of a black ipa, and the beer's appearance help me feel that way also. Earthy. Enough malt backbone to keep the whole beer very interesting. Maybe a slight mediciney taste as the beer warmed, but nothing off putting.

This beer definitely was unique and much different than I was expecting. In a blind taste test, I think I would've said it must be an imperial black IPA.

22 ounce bottle, no date listed on the "bottled on" section of the bottle. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours dark brown with a reddish tinge. There's also about an inch light tan head that stayed around for a long time, and a lot of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like caramel, citrusy and herbal hops, and a bit of dark fruit. I think the taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but there's the addition of some nuttiness and coffee. There's also a bitter hoppy finish. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a little coating with moderate carbonation. I thought this was a good brew, I really do need to try more of their beers! Definitely worth picking up this one. $7.49 a bomber.
