Stopped by with my wife and daughter on the way up to Santa Barbara (and later Mammoth) on my first night of vacation. They both had to go the bathroom and I wanted to pick up some quality beer. Had stopped here last June on the way home from the Firestone Invitational and really liked the place. Picked up a 4-pack of Unit 28 (a DIPA) and a crowler of this after trying a sample. Online description read, “A full-bodied, chocolaty porter with heavy amounts of smoked malt. Habaneros add a clean, sharp spiciness.” Initial thought after the sample the night before was the good balance between habaneros and smokiness.

Poured a black color with 2-to-3 fingers of khaki gray frothy head. Just a few bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Very good spotty lacing. Outstanding retention. (Sight - 4.00)

Smelled chocolate, black coffee, caramel sweetness, cacao, smooth charwood, hints of crayon and slight spice on the back end. (Smell - 4.25)

Tasted at least as good as the nose. Smoky wood up front, followed by a consistent, lingering habanero spice. Also cacao, coffee grinds, fudge with walnuts and cocoa powder. (Taste - 4.25)

Medium body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, spicy finish. (Feel - 4.25)

Excellent mix of spice and smoke. Really glad I picked it up. (Overall - 4.25)

Intense smokey flavor, with a decent amount of heat and plenty of roasty Porter flavors on the back end to make this one of the most balanced chile beers I've had. But, you have to like heat. Otherwise just avoid it. But for those who appreciate it, this is one of the best.
