Edmund's Oast "Lord Proprietor's Mild"
on tap at the brewery, 20 December 2014
$5 / pint

From the menu: "A fusion of sorts- England and Charleston, our shared heritage coupled with modernity. Tea from America’s only tea plantation melded with a nutty, chocolatey English-style mild. Probably not something the Lords Proprietor were drinking, but you know, whatever.

ABV: 3.7%
ORIGINAL GRAVITY: 1.036
IBUS (CALCULATED): 12
GRAINS: Marris Otter, Medium Crystal, Pale Chocolate
HOPS: East Kent Goldings
OTHER INGREDIENTS: Charleston Tea Plantation Black Tea"

Appearance: Clear russet brown body beneath a full head of off-white froth. Very good head retention and lacing.

Aroma: Toasty and gently caramelish.

Flavor: Caramel, light brown sugar, bread dough, lightly toasty, gently nutty, cocoa. Low level bitterness. Leafy. Apple.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with a very fine, gentle carbonation. Smooth.

Overall: Impressive. Very much in tune with the milds currently found in England today. Refined, balanced, rounded and flavorful. Very drinkable; and easy to pair with a wide range of foods. I can only assume that the leafiness is where the tea fits in, but I'm not sure that it's needed as the Kent Goldings could easily cover that aspect of the brew by themselves (or at least with the addition of some Fuggles perhaps); but it helps to support another local business, so I'm all for it.
