Bottle dated 12-21-18. CBF Tulip pint.

A: pours a ruby red bordering on brown with 1/2 finger sandy head and streams of carbonation. No lacing to speak of, but it is three months old.

S: albeit fresh out of the refrigerator, this is lacking in the malty and eatery notes I typically associate with the style. There is some toasted malt and a faint cherry-like scent, but it is a struggle to detect it. This improves to a malty, nutty, slightly dried fruit note as it warms. Quite similar to Belhaven, actually.

T: much drier than expected for the style. Actually, it reminds me a lot of Great Lakes Christmas ale, minus the spices.

M: surprisingly lighter and cleaner than I am accustomed to for the style. Very drinkable.

O: years ago, CBC made a really awesome 90 shilling Scottish ale, and I sort of expected this to be a reprisal of that beer, but it isn't. In fact, this is a touch light in every respect for what I associate with a Scottish ale. This is really like Belhaven, the classic Scottish, but is not like any of the American examples I've had. That said, it really works. It is super drinkable, and maltier and more complex than an amber ale. This is a classic style, perfectly executed, though I am left wanting it to have more "oomph." Would definitely pair well with dinner, and at a low ABV pretty sessionable. I'd throw it in a pick six, but wouldn't buy six of them.

"Sing me a song of a lass that is gone..." That's my usual Scotch whiskey drinking song. Also for Outlander (I love that show, and I usually have a little Glenfiddich 15 while watching). This beer from Columbus Brewing doesn't quite capture that feeling, but it is an easy drinking take on the style.

It pours a gorgeous light brown with minor fizz. Clear. The aroma is clean but subdued. The taste is a delicious malty sweetness that may not be true to the dark hoppy taste of more authentic examples of the style. The aftertaste is clean and sweet. This would go well with a big meal of beef stew or shepherd's pie or something (with some Yorkshire pudding maybe). It also would be pretty sessionable - several would not be a problem.

Recommended as an easy drinking version of the style.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 12/29/2016. Pours slightly hazy deep reddish copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, raisin, plum, fig, and apple; with lighter notes of cocoa, peat smoke, toffee, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready/light roast malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, raisin, plum, fig, and apple; with lighter notes of cocoa, peat smoke, toffee, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal hop and roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, raisin, plum, fig, apple, herbal, light cocoa/smoke, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/light roast malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Minimal dryness from hop/roast bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, and slightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.7%. Overall this is a great Scottish ale! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/light roast malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. Great rich malt complexity and complimenting yeast fruitiness; with just enough hops for balance. A really delicious offering, and spot on style example. One of the better ones I have had.

I had this beer sent to me from Ohio. It was good sweet easy drinking on a hot Sunday afternoon.

Look: cloudy reddish brown, with a thick light brown head.

Aroma: The aroma is caramel, nuts, raisin bread

Taste: Toasted malts, caramel/butterscotch, maybe honey and vanilla, not a lot of hops but that's OK.

Feel: A bit creamy at first but also a bit watery

Acquired from Swettenham_Shire so a big “Thank You” goes out to him. Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a cloudy medium brown color with a very thin off-white head that fades very quickly and leaves very little lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains caramelized malts, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel, toffee, vanilla and brown sugar. Then a hearty malt character comes in. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a long time if you’re in the mood for the style.

Bottled on 12/20/16. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy and cloudy deep auburn with some orange hues, some sediment/floaties; big fluffy light tan head that slowly falls leaving great retention and sticky lacing. The aromas are malt forward. It's all malts. Hints of bread. Subtle hints of cocoa and toffee with some caramel in the mix. The flavors follow the nose. The malts shine. More mild hints of cocoa, toffee and caramel. Some fresh bread. Nice mild sweetness. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is very nice. It's light with moderate carbonation. It's very fluffy, smooth and easy to drink.

This is a nice Scottish Ale. This has never been a flashy style, so they did a good job of keeping it traditional. Enjoyable stuff.

Poured into a thistle glass from a 12oz bottle

It is a murky/dirty brown with a decent amount of thick tan foam.

It smells great. Toffee, caramel, carmalized sugars, a bit of earthy peat, and some nutty bread. Very malty.

It taste a lot like it smells except with a lot less depth. The toffee and caramel are there with a little bit of earthy/ herbal hops and mustiness, but it's watered down tasting.

The body is a hair thin too.

This is a pretty good beer, and a decent example of the style. Reminds me of Belhaven a lot.

12 oz bottle poured into Spiegelau IPA glass

A: Small khaki colored head sits atop a slightly hazy brown caramel body.

S: Smells like peat, scotch, toffee, caramel, burnt sugarsand a little bit like toasted peanut butter.

T: A lot like the nose but a little more muted, you've got caramel, toffee, honey, sweet sugars,

M: Its starts out creamy but then finishes watery but it has a pretty clean finish too.

O: This is not bad, amazing nose the taste is a little muted, but really for a low ABV scottish ale its actially quite flavorful. Its just the nose promised more. I really wouldn't go out of my way to drink this, but if offered or on tap I would be happy with it.
