Bottled on 12/27/18

Pours maybe the deepest brown hue possible without being totally black and topped with just shy of a finger of soft khaki froth; solid retention results in an incredibly persistent, thick collar with virtually no lacing escaping beyond it.

Aroma opens with sweet cream highlighted by underlying hints of roast; as it warms, notes of toasted biscuit and barley, dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and lighter molasses and sweet cream all come through in balance.

Taste profile highlights subtle coffee and the lightest hints of dark chocolate and even some dark fruits, with a building sweet cream tone and bright earthy/oaky roast to go along with the faint grass/hoppiness on the finish.

Mouthfeel brings a nice medium body with decent carbonation in conjunction with a crisp malt profile across the tongue; smooth creaminess falls in line easily against the excellent balance of malty gritty and well-tempered hoppy bite.

Enjoyable and all-around very agreeable stout that doesn’t sacrifice that subtle boldness of its character to get there; ‘balance’ is a word I may overuse with really good beer, but this really is an example of balance in a very good/great beer.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 1/3/2019. Pours lightly hazy nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a small fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, cream, marshmallow, toffee, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of molasses, licorice, raisin, fig, date, smoke, wood, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. A bit too fruity/yeasty aromas, but not overwhelming. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malts, lactose, light-moderate fruity yeast, and light earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, cream, marshmallow, toffee, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of molasses, licorice, raisin, fig, date, smoke, wood, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Mild herbal, floral, grassy, roasted bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, cream, marshmallow, toffee, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, dark/brown bread, molasses, licorice, raisin, fig, date, smoke, wood, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, lactose, and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a solid roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; and no cloying flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering hop/roast bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. No warming alcohol for 5.6%. Overall this is a delicious milk/sweet stout. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, lactose, and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mildly bitter/drying finish. Very clean and nicely rich malt complexity, and balanced lactose flavors; with mild fruity yeast and earthy hops against sweetness. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on English style example.

Perhaps a touch ashy but the lactose sweetness helps balance it out. Well crafted beer but nothing spectacular.

Bottle best by 4/26/2019. 13oz tulip.

A: pours a jet black with two fingers big, frothy head. The head lasts in the form of a silky cap right until the end. Don’t really recall the lacing.

S: fresh roasty smell, sweet malt, and I’ll be darned if I can’t smell the lactose coming right off the glass. It smells downright milky.

T: much like the smell, the arrival is a light roastiness that turns sweet on the middle - the middle is a perfect English-style stout, followed by light bittering from earthy hops then a distinctive lactose sourness that lingers into the finish. Light on the roast, light on the sweetness, heavy on the slightly sour milk taste.

M: slick, smooth, lighter in body, but thick in texture. Very, very, satisfying texture with moderate carbonation that keeps it from ever feeling unpleasant.

O: a classic milk stout that goes a little overboard with the lactose to really make sure you know it’s there. I could probably use a little more roastiness and a little more sweetness, but if it had been sweeter, it would be hard to have more than one. As it is, you could drink several of these easily. Well done CBC. Worth picking up annually.

Bottled on 1/3/19. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours almost black with a small khaki head that fades leaving okay retention and lacing. The aromas are malt forward. Some marshmallows and milk chocolate. Mild smoke and roasted characteristics. The flavors basically follow the nose. More milk chocolate and marshmallows. The lactose is noticeable without completely dominating. Malts do their thing. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is on the fuller side of light-bodied with moderate to active carbonation. It's sharp, fluffy, smooth and easy to drink.

This is a solid cream stout. It's a classic and traditional example of the style. It's not flashy, but it's not supposed to be. Not bad at all.

Look is a dark brown with a nice auburn head that sticks to the glass.
Smell is milky with a hint of chocolate.
Taste is smooth, but little bite that is usually associated with a stout.
Feel is quite nice.
Overall is pretty good.

Thanks to the beer guy at Trader Joe’s who recommended this.

Melk brewed by Columbus Brewing Company, with an ABV of 5.60% This English Sweet, Milk Stout Pours out a deep brown color with a a nice light brown head. There is a nice amount of lacing to this brew, it sticks to the side of the glass well. This brew has the look of cola, not saying that is a bad thing. The smell is Rich, Roasted grains and malts. There is also a nice milk chocolate notes in the smell of this brew. So far Melk is a nice inviting brew. Now for the taste , it is Bold notes of Roasted goodness, mixed with milk an mirror chocolate notes as well. Kinda reminds me of coffee. This brew would go nice on a cold winter day or with dinner. There is nothing overpowering about this brew, it has a super nice balance to it. I can't get over how smooth this brew goes down. The body of Melk is a solid medium. The mouth feel, is Bold, Clean, Smooth, Roasted and Refreshing. Overall I am going to give Melk a soild 4 out of 5. I would definitely look this brew up again giving the opportunity to. Columbus Brewing Company, did a real nice job with this Milk Stout.
