Picked this up in Columbus about a month ago, and have been eager to try it!

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pilsner glass. Pours a dark amber color, slightly cloudy, with a 1" head that is slow to reduce. The off-white foam is quite dense, giving it a merangue-like quality.

Has a malty, nutty aroma, with hints of toffee, peach and cherry. The nose is rather complex; one minute, it's more roasted and sweet, the next more fruity.

Has a nutty, malty start that gives it a real solid base-line taste. Hazelnut with cocoa is the way I'd describe this malt profile. There's a tangy, fruity flavor that creeps in underneath and grows, becoming dryer as the sip finishes. A mild hoppiness is also present that gives it an earthy, grassy taste, but does not make it that bitter.

Medium to full bodied, this is a smooth sipper with a tangy, very mildly hopped finish. Leaves the tongue dry, but not overly so.

A pleasant bock and a quality brew, though I'd expect nothing less from Columbus Brewing. These guys make a quality brew, and I cannot wait until they are represented in full here in the Cleveland area! I'd recommend this or anything else by them you can get your hands on.

Bock pours a really nice copper color. It’s mostly clear. Backlighting reveals some really nice crimson highlights. A soft tan head sits on top. It’s roughly two fingers tall and takes its time dissipating. It holds firm on the surface for a while. Lacing was sticky and moderate. Looks good.

It definitely smells good. The malt base seems quite diverse. It has a strong toasted malt scent up front. But, there are also notes of light, sweet caramel and cocoa in the mix, as well. Smells really nice. There’s an earthy quality to it throughout. Hops are easily noted and smell mostly grassy. Noble hops? I believe it just might be. Alcohol is blended pretty well and doesn’t come through strong.

The flavor is VERY impressive. Wow! I was not expecting this to be this good. Malts are definitely large and in charge here. A toasty, bread-like flavor kicks it off and resonates throughout. It’s complemented by light caramel and cocoa. Noble hops definitely add a grassy hop kick to the flavor. It’s a little bitter and dry, but adds a lot to the flavor. Fortunately, the hop flavor never seems to overshadow the malts. They remain the centerpiece. Alcohol isn’t much of a factor. Finishes malty, a little grassy, and dry.

Bock has a lighter body. It seems a little thin. Carbonation is soft and light. More body would help. Given the malt presence, it’s a little surprising how light it seems. For what it’s worth, it definitely goes down easy. Far too easy, if it really is 7% abv.

Bock is surprisingly good! I’m really impressed. I didn’t know what to expect when I picked up the six pack. I’m now hoping I can find more soon. Bock is pretty impressive all-around. Its only shortcoming is that its body seems a little too thin. Otherwise, it rocks! Find it while you can. You’ll be glad you did.

Finally a brew from CBC for the malt fans. I am a CBC fan because they are local and skilled brewers. The Bock keeps a good quarter inch head, and is a deep copper in color. It does
not have the liquid bread smell and its smell is a preview of the great taste. It is smooth on the palate and hints at its cousin the Marzens which are about to be bottled in prep for the Fall. Well done CBC. Taste this and then a Troegs and you will clearly know the difference between Bock and Doppelbock. Prosit!

Aroma: Toast and bread-crust aromas are prominent. Low fruity esters appear with agitation. No hop aroma.

Appearance: Ruby colored pour with an off-white head that retains well.

Flavor: More crust and bready malt flavors. Some earthy hop bitterness provides some balance. Balance is definitey towards the malt profile. Finish is clean and dry.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. No alcohol heat or astringency.

Overall impression: A very nice bock. Lots of flavor and well-crafted. I'll seek this out again.

Served from the bottle into a pilsner glass

A- Poured a dark brownish red with a massive fluffy head that some chunky lace

S- Strong aroma of fruity esters, toffee, breadiness

T- Very rich toffee, butterscotch, breadiness, brown sugar, and chocolatey notes. Some clove and some roasty notes. A very rich, flavorful, and complex beer. Tastes like the best brown ale mixed with a scottish ale.

M- Very smooth, creamy good carbonation, easy drinking

O- This is a great beer, very impressed. A very rich and flavorful beer, unique and complex. Very drinkable and great mouthfeel. I wish I had more than one bottle of this.

This is mad good. Pours a solid dark color, with a finger head. Big malt smell, big malt flavor. A little smoky initially, but it smooths out the more you drink. Solid bitter finish, but not in a bad way. A great bock from cbc. Can't emphasize the malt enough here.

A- Pours a crystal clear reddish copper color with a nice biege head. Head doesn't have a lot of retention and leaves a bit of lacing here and there.

S- Pretty basic here a ton of bready malts, touch of nuts and light on the dark fruits. Smell really nice though.

T- This one follows the nose really well. A great amount of malts here with a light amount of spice from the hops.

M- Lighter side of medium in body and nice carbonation.

O- Pretty surprised and impressed by this one. I really like.

Thanks to Eric and Tony for this bottle. Had fun this afternoon!

Poured into a Kirta Halbe stange.

Rich color here, deep cherrywood colors with bright ruby hues in the light. Excellent clarity. The head rises easily to just under 3 fingers and showcases excellent retention.

The aroma starts off a bit soapy, but quickly yields great depth of malt character. Toasty bread crust and warm dough invite one to dig in with reckless abandon.

Wow, I typically dislike bocks precisely because many seem to be too light in color and malt flavor, but not here. This easily has the best malt profile of any CBC beer I can recall. Flavors of browned whole grain bread and fresh baguette wash over the palate, while the finish demands further attention by way of assertive, yet balanced, hops. The hops are earthy with a bitter spicy finish. There's a very subtle hint of fruit sweetness, perhaps currant, and a nice honey-like profile that develops over time.

Creamy smooth and highly quaffable. I actually wish this were a tad weaker on alcohol so I could even more easily drink this in quantity. Bock Bier definitely becomes quite dry by the end of the glass though.

Overall I wasn't expecting this to be my cup of tea, but in fact I feel that I will be wanting to keep this stocked in my fridge throughout the season. Very nice.

Poured into a Samuel Smith pint glass on 1/24/12

Deep rusty brown hues; very nice color. Rather clear. The head nears three fingers before starting a moderate descent. Lace is sparse as the head recedes. Thin retention. Lace starts to catch halfway down.

The aroma boasts malty goodness a plenty; plush layers of baked dark bread, grain, a dusting of cocoa and hints of yeast. Very subtle dark fruit overtones on the peripheries. Suggestions of nuts and earth as it warms.

Flavor-wise, it's pretty well in line with the nose. A subtle, earthy hoppiness greets the palate, rolling onward to a more malt-forward profile of toasted bread and grains. Maybe not as much of a cocoa presence, though. This is one dry beer, especially the finish.

The feel nudges past the upward threshold of medium body; this ain't a twiggy critter, no sir. Carbonation is moderate and appropriately in line with the whole of the feel.

Overall impression - simple and tasty. I like that. It's exciting that CBC is flexing a bit more of their malted muscle. I wouldn't mind this one making a repeat visit in the future.
