Pours black with nearly two fingers of dense, caramel-colored foam on top. Head retention is good with thick lacing left behind. Aroma is roasted and toasted malts, with the roasty notes poking through at the foreground. A little bit of toffee, and caramel add a little to the aroma depth. Flavor profile is smooth, and well-balanced notes of caramel, toffee, molasses, and roasted and toasted malts. It has a roasty, almost smoky finish. It tastes straightforward and simple, providing a well refined stout for enjoyment. Mouth feel is a touchy fizzy and grainy, but is otherwise velvety smooth. It has a medium thickness. Overall, this is a great, plain stout. Don't mistake the wording of "plain" to mean boring, as it has plenty going on, rewarding sipping and savoring, or gulping.

Served in a 12oz snifter from a 12oz bottle.

12oz bottle dated 1/4/18 poured into a snifter
A: Pitch black with the thinnest of heads
S: Quite complex with chocolate, espresso, caramel and vanilla
T: Matches the nose, same notes just the coffee is a little less emphasized versus the sweeter notes. Great balance here, I'm almost surprised this didn't see any time in barrel (though Columbus... you need to do that!)
M: Medium+ bodied, smooth, balanced, a touch of sweetness, just a hint of bitter
O: This is a great stout. The only thing that could make it better for me is a touch more bitterness. Or time in a bourbon barrel. I'll also be tossing a bottle aside to see how age treats it

A very thick, viscous pour of used motor oil has a dense tan head that quickly dissipates to a bubbly collar.

Smell has plenty of medium roast coffee with vanilla, cola and roasty but airy malt.

Taste is tangy roasted nuts and root beer with chocolate and cocoa via a smooth, medium body that finishes semi-dry to dry, and despite the abundance of coffee, leans overall semi-sweet.

In 1973 I was in high school and working part time for Sohio, the Standard Oil Company of Ohio. My last job before retiring last year was for a spin off of Sohio (BP did not want what to keep became TravelCenters of America). Anyway, the namesake brew is pretty good, like most Columbus products.

It's black and fizzy and has a really good roasty smell. The taste is on the malty side of the spectrum, sweet and roasty. Hops are prevalent as well. The finish is slightly sweet and clean. Easy drinking double.

Recommended as an easy American style stout.

From the 12 oz bottle in a snifter. This excellent brew pours a murky
blackish brown with nice head of brown foam that settles to a thick ring,
thin light pool, and shows some excellent lacing. Nose of rich coffee, dark
roast with subtle char, toffee, and dark chocolate. Flavors hit a delicious balance
of coffee and dark chocolate that is semi sweet and flavorful with touches of
light cream and char and a very light herbal hop in the background. Excellent mouth
feel; full body, medium light carbonation that is just right to cut through the heft of the
brew, and a long lingering coffee note that is lightly bitter from the malt with touches of
chocolate.

Stout lovers, this one is a must. Excellent work from CBC

Cheers

pitch black with 1/4 inch off white creamy head

Smell: Roasty, smooth cold brew coffee
