Brewed by:
Stoneface Brewing Co.
New Hampshire, United States

Style: American Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.90%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This New England style double IPA has the highest ABV of any IPA we brew. Double-dry hopped with irresponsible amounts of Galaxy and Calypso hops, we achieve a big fruity aroma with lots of peach, citrus and passionfruit.
Fun Fact: This is considered the “citrusy” double in our portfolio. The name was born when Pete & Erol tried to explain ‘hop utilization’ (how well hops impart their taste and aroma into beer) and got tongue-tied calling it Hopulization.

It is predominantly cloudy. Gold in color. A sticky head clings all over the glass.

Aroma is fairly muted for me. Some tropical fruits, a lot of malts, and some grain alcohol. There is something very distinct in there that I can't pin down though. Interesting...

The taste is much more assertive. Mango, grapefruit, fresh homemade bread like grains, and more than anything else, that unique item that I can smell so strong. It might be Paw Paw fruit/papaya?? Hard to describe, but I think I had it before in Jackie O's Paw Paw Wheat. A very earthy, dull (in a good way), stone ground, barley like flavor combined with a non sweet, peach pit like fruit. Very different. I like it. This one is sneaky hoppy. Nowhere near assertive, but it has a solid, lingering bitterness.

The feel is insane. I am giving it a 5 here. Lots of body, but so drinkable.

I am kind of surprised at the ratings being as high as they are. Not a negative thing. It's just that I find this so balanced I figured people would not be wowed by it. Very tasty beer that stands out a bit in a crowded field.

A friend of mine sent me this DIPA and I thought it was really great.

Look - Cloudy amber/orange like apple juice with a two inch white head.

Aroma - The aroma was fruity, citrus, a bit floral.

Taste - The taste was very fruity, grapefruit, mango, papaya, as well as some pine and grassy taste, perhaps some yeast too.

Overall - Very juicy, relatively light, delicious.

Pint can poured into a fat Duvel glass. Canned on 4/4/18 " Robert Doubly Jr. Ironman" opened on 4/18/18. 8.9 % abv. 60 ibu

O.k New Hampsha, it's time to get in the game...the New England hazy, juicy ipa game ! Hazzy and opaque gold and amber coloration with white highlights. The foamy head is high, clumpy, rocky, sticky lacing as it recedes with bunches of creamy white left over floating around.

The aroma actually reminds me of some old school, west coast ipa's with a roastie, toastie, caramel like malty thing, bunches of herbs and spices, wet earthy and dry grass hoppy tones. Sour, herbaceous, wet golden wheat pops right out. Peppery slight citrus baser fruitiness is in there, but well hidden. Not your typicallly juicy, citrus fruit hop bomb aroms, that's for sure.

The mouthfeel and texture is on the full and heavy side of the douple NE ipa stylings. Dense but light malty effect liquid, crisp, full, smooth, long and lush. A silky, complex mouthfeel that has a big dry-earthy bite. Crisp, then full and thick, finishing very dry and earthy bitter.

A heady mix of peppery herbs and spices, earthy tones that hit your palate hard...and very dry! The hops feel thick, dry, seriously earth y, bitter edges with citrus, orange peel, and black pepper all over it. Tangy fruits, citrus based tang, no real sweetness or juicy effects last. It's Layed on thick with dry, bitter hops, all earth, no sweet. Malt is bright and crisp, with notes of dry golden wheat and light blonde ale style complexity.

The herbaceous, earthy, bitter and dry overall hoppy effect is really much more old school Dipa style, no real New England style adpects to be had except for the appearance. The malt ventures far away from light, highlighting some dense, toasty flavor's that enhance the bitter edged, earthy hop tones. Heavy stuff, man.

This is easily one of the most "bad-ass" ipa's NH has to offer.

On tap at The Ginger Man in Boston.

Pours a fairly clear shade of amber, with little head.

Smell is juicy, tropical, with mostly pineapple, but citrus and stonefruit as well. Superb smell.

The taste is also tropical, balancing all the fruit with a robust bitterness and some pine. Now, this is an IPA!

Medium bodied, well carbonated, and almost oily in texture, this is joy to pour down your throat.

Wow, Stoneface, this was world class! So much flavor, and great mouthfeel. An epic IPA!

Pours a slight hazy dark yellow. Smell is faint Creamsicle, not nearly as strong of a hop aroma as I would expect. Taste is more orange with some toasty malt. A bit of the hoppy sweet feel that beers like ruinten and Ephraim have. Solid beer but not super exciting.

From the 500 ml. bottle. Sampled on March 20, 2016.

Hazy yellow pour under a lingering white head.

Big pineapple juice and tropical aroma. Also a little grainy and tobacco note.

The body is medium but also smooth.

The taste is not quite as fruity and tropical like as the aroma suggests but the hop bitterness is still very strong and dry at the end.
