BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Stoneface Brewing Co.
New Hampshire, United States
stonefacebrewing.com

Style: American Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.90%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This New England style double IPA has the highest ABV of any IPA we brew. Double-dry hopped with irresponsible amounts of Galaxy and Calypso hops, we achieve a big fruity aroma with lots of peach, citrus and passionfruit.
Fun Fact: This is considered the “citrusy” double in our portfolio. The name was born when Pete & Erol tried to explain ‘hop utilization’ (how well hops impart their taste and aroma into beer) and got tongue-tied calling it Hopulization.

Reminds me of Pliny. I like this better tho. Think Pliny but available in the Northeast. Hopefully they get their hands on more galaxy hops and brew more often. I hear another batch is coming soon!!!

Poured into a 13 oz tulip, fresh as hell. Pours a yellowis orange, with a two inch sticky white head, that leaves behind plenty of lace.

Smell is mango, tangerine, pine, marijuana, and grapefruit.

The taste follows the nose, starts out with citrus and marijuana and finishes with Pine and grapefruit, balanced perfect.

Body is medium, perfect carbonation, not really dry, and the drinkability is off the charts for its ABV.

Overall this is one of the best DIPA's I have had..........

Drink fresh; bottled on 2/24/16. Consumed on 3/23/16; I suppose 28 days is still fresh. Light straw color appearance with quite the large off-white frothy head. Spots of lacing stick to the sides of the glass. Beautiful aroma of tropical fruits and citrus. Flavors match the nose but a little more muted. Mildly carbonated with some sweetness to cut the hop bitterness. Overall, this is one impressive double ipa. I'll go out on a limb and say this is up there and quite possibly a top ten or maybe even five imperial ipa for me personally. Enjoy!

On tap at The Ginger Man in Boston.

Pours a fairly clear shade of amber, with little head.

Smell is juicy, tropical, with mostly pineapple, but citrus and stonefruit as well. Superb smell.

The taste is also tropical, balancing all the fruit with a robust bitterness and some pine. Now, this is an IPA!

Medium bodied, well carbonated, and almost oily in texture, this is joy to pour down your throat.

Wow, Stoneface, this was world class! So much flavor, and great mouthfeel. An epic IPA!

I drank this beer from the bottle. Upon opening the air filled with overwhelming smell of hops. The smell is of robust hops with a fruity citrusy ending. Thr flavor profile starts with a bold mix of the Galaxy calypso and simcoe hops straight to the pallet with a soft finish of citrus fruit leaving the pallet with the taste of fruits and not overwhelming hops. This beer goes down way to easy for what it is and the alcohol is barely noticeable for 8.9%. I am a big Dipa drinker and this one is atop the list for me.

Super juicy, very good DIPA. This brewery is already good, and getting better. I will search out this beer each time I go to New Hampshire from now on.

Whenever I'm up north Stoneface is a must stop - love the brewery n love the brews. This is one of - if not their best. Very juicy and flavorful. Go's down super easy - very smooth. Not a juice bomb - just a tasty brew that seems to get better with each sip. Well done

Pours a nice hazy yellow orange with great looking lacing that sticks well at every layer. The nose is certainly tropical and citrus fruits but there's a sweetness that concerns me it might taste too sweet like some other DIPAS. Medium body, not overly carbonated with a great mouth feel.
The taste is delicious, there are many layers of flavor to this beer and I'm loving it. I instantly notice a juicy strong papaya/peach flavor which you also notice in the nose a bit, almost candied. The juice is accompanied by some grapefruit and resin. There's definitely a healthy amount of malty sweetness but Stoneface did a nice job of not overdoing the sweetness. The sweetness is balanced well with the bitter hoppy flavor and booze. Extremely drinkable.

Bottled 02/24/16

L-Pours hazy and gold with a 3 finger fluffy white head. The wheat in the malt bill is apparent. Lacing is excellent.
S- The nose is citrusy and sweet. A beautiful melding of the Galaxy and Calypso hops.
T- Many DIPA's run the citrus route. The addition of the Calypso hops to this beer give it a unique finish that makes my palate scream out like Mr. Koolaid after bursting through a wall. To say that this DIPA speaks to me does not do it justice. The 8.9% alchohol is hidden expertly. I'm glad I got a couple more bottles when I did.
F-The carbonation is soft and the mouthfeel is full. This beer coats the tongue allowing the great hop flavor to linger.
O-This beer moves into my desert island category both for it's uniqueness and the execution by the brewer. It's fantastic. I recommend this beer highly.

Drank from a 1 Pint, 0.9 Fluid Ounces bottle purchased at Pemberton Farms, Cambridge, MA
Served in a snifter

Outstanding appearance. The cloudy, yellow ochre liquid was capped by a super tight, frothy and creamy, off white head. A thick but patchy blanket of lacing coated the glass and stuck around long after the beer was finished. The head slowly dropped to a substantial film of bubbles. As the beer sat, the chill haze dropped to reveal a slightly hazy body.

The nose was amazing. Tropical fruits dominated. Loads of intense guava, papaya and mango. Really sweet and fragrant. Exotic. This reminded me somewhat of tutti fruiti flavored candy or gum. Juicy tangerine and canned mandarins were apparent as well. Hint of white grapefruit. Really complex and interesting.

The flavor profile was also terrific but a bit more straightforward. Super juicy and bright. Loads of fresh orange and candied orange peel. Grapefruit came in mid palate. More juicy orange and tangerine notes. Slightly tangy. There was a subtle tropical fruit presence. Bit of mango. White grapefruit appeared on the back end and in the finish. Somewhat rind-like. Just a touch bitter.

Fluffy and frothy mouthfeel. The beer was medium bodied for the style. A fine, zippy effervescence gave the liquid a nice creamy slickness.

Stoneface's IPA is a solid beer but Hopulization brings things to another level. This double IPA definitely competes with some of the best hoppy beers currently coming out of New England. Definitely grab this if you can find it.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a Woodcock brothers imperial pint.

Pours a slightly hazy amber with big two finger head that leaves nice lacing all the way down. Smeel is pine, grapefruit, grass, and light weed. Taste is grapefruit, pine, weed, and the finish is straight grapefruit pith. Well carbonated with slight warmth from the booze. Easy to drink with a good hop bite.

overall this is another great beer from Stoneface. Can't wait for the RIS!

I like Stoneface. They aren't groundbreaking but they make very nice hoppy beers that I can drive to pick up on my lunch hour. I'd picked up some Mozzacalypse a few months back which was a tasty DIPA when cold, but boozy and malty otherwise. I didn't rush out for Hopulization, but I've since made two trips back for more. I loved this beer. Huge hop flavor and creamy draft-like head on the pour. The mouthfeel is tremendous. This DIPA is awesome.

A friend of mine sent me this DIPA and I thought it was really great.

Look - Cloudy amber/orange like apple juice with a two inch white head.

Aroma - The aroma was fruity, citrus, a bit floral.

Taste - The taste was very fruity, grapefruit, mango, papaya, as well as some pine and grassy taste, perhaps some yeast too.

Overall - Very juicy, relatively light, delicious.

Poured from a bottle purchased at the brewery into tulips:

Appearance: pours a bright orange, slightly haze body, with a sudsy, foamy white head on top. Solid retention, with tons of lacing; the type that leaves a pile of little bubbles in a ring around the glass. Haze clears as the beer settles, and becomes translucent.

Aroma: extremely pungent, the bouquet opens as soon as the cap is cracked. I got melon at first, followed by citrus and citrus rind, and finished with a touch of cracker. Smells well-balanced, and the aroma, as I stated above, is very potent. Maybe a touch of pine, but mostly fruit.

Taste: packs lots of tropical flavor, but with a more balanced and evident malt base than the majority of NE IPAs. Following the smell, I got caramel and cracker malt to begin, then subsequently got lots of tropical fruit, including orange, grapefruit, and melon. A tiny touch of dankness on the finish makes for a lovely, balanced DIPA.

Feel: medium bodied, with a touch of booziness present. Leaves a ton of stickiness on the palate.

Overall: an incredibly balanced, delicious DIPA. The more famous NE DIPAs, like Heady, Haze, Vicinity, Epiphany, and Swish all tend toward overwhelming hoppiness. Stoneface has crafted a DIPA that caters more toward balance with the malt and with the hop bill. It's very, very good, and incredibly underrated. Seek it out!

061616 so only a few weeks old. Super smooth all around. Nose, flavor, and feel all incredibly hoppy and fruity and full of resin. So drinkable. Huge hop bomb but not bitter and not overwhelming. Not boozy but the high ABV really snuck up on me and led to an interesting night. Very well-crafted.

A - Golden, hazy orange with an inch or so fluffy white head

S - citrus, pineapple, guava, pine, some hints of malts in the background

T - strong hoppy citrus, dank and juicy, very nice!

M - creamy fresh, light carbonation, long lingering hop finish on the slightly bitter side but still smooth.

O - Juicy hop bomb! I love this one but wishing the $8 price tag was closer to the $5 tag on their IPA. Certainly will be getting more soon regardless. Great Double IPA.

Pours a relatively clear amber-orange color with a 2 finger bubbly white head. The head retention is great and refuses to leave the glass. When it finally does, some pretty impressive cobweb lacing is left to linger.

The aroma is a tad boozy, but has a ton of tropical fruit notes bursting from the glass. I get some mango and melon, as well as some grapefruit. The faintest hint of pine touches the back end. A very good balance of sweetness with the slightest touch of bitterness.

The taste, like the nose, is a bit on the boozy side, especially as it warms. However this does not detract from the bright citrus notes and sweet, caramel malt character. This is truly a well-balanced beer.

The feel is medium bodied with pretty good carbonation. Once again the burn from the alcohol is ever present but it doesn't detract much from the flavor itself. Perhaps a bit resinous and bitter at the back end, with the bitterness lingering for just a bit longer than expected. Still, creamy and smooth going down.

Overall, another fantastic brew from Stoneface. Doesn't quite leave me wanting more like their signature IPA, but it's still extremely well done and the balance is truly fantastic. Would love if this beer was available on a more regular basis.

Damn, I love this beer. Pours a nice cloudy yellow with lacing that lasts and lasts. Smell is wonderfully dank, like good weed. Citrusy up front and the malt provides a smooth finish. Be careful, it's smooth and the ABV can sneak up on you. Respect it. Glad to see they are pushing this throughout New England, have found it in Jamestown, RI and Hadley MA. Priced right as well.

From the half liter bottle, it pours amber with a nice head that lasts a bit. Lacing as you enjoy it. Nose is pleasantly hoppy and the mouth revels in the well balanced malt and powerful hops. Yum! This ages pretty well overall - my bottle was a bit old for the style, dated, I think 120815.

Hazy golden pour with minimal white top that leaves some lacing. Color is really nice. Aroma is chock-full of citrus and fruit with a touch of malt. Flavor is so well-balanced, with a blast of citrus and bitter hop up front giving way to the smoothness of the bready malt. Finish is top-notch balance with no lingering throat burning bitter. Super drinkable.
