Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine #121

Nutty, Clean, Balanced, Toasty
Brewed with English malts and hops, the brewer also opted to add fresh hazelnuts for more upfront nuttiness than just relying on malt would allow. The nutty character is pronounced and complements the malt character well. Toasty with a slight sweetness. Modestly hopped and only 5.4 percent ABV, this Brown Ale stays balanced. A beer that’s very much to style, and one that brings back memories of pub crawling in Northern England. [Jason]

undated 12 oz bottle served in a Belgian snifter.

Pours clear, dark, red-brown with a small, weak tan head. Manages to leaves some lacing on the glass.

Aroma: quite mild, with hints of roasted nuts, wood, and brown bread.

Flavor: mild up front, but a rather bold, nutty aftertast taste with a clear contribution from hazelnuts. Lightly sweet until the aftertaste.

O: a solid brown ale worth seeking out if you fancy this style or hazelnut ales.

Poured from the tap into a pint glass at the Carolina Ale House in Columbia, SC. The appearance is a clear dark amber with a large white head. The aroma is sweet caramel malt.

Bottle poured into a snifter.

3.25 A: Deep mahogany brown that looks black through the center. Not quite one finger of frothy beige head. Retention is lacking, but that's probably from the nuts. Not really lacing is left.

4.75 S: Hell ya, this is nuts done right. Deep lasting toastiness Sweet caramel underneath. I suspect that this would be fairly nutty without the hazelnuts and with them it's simply wonderful. Not overly complex, but forceful with the aromas it does offer.

4.75 T: The taste is simple more of the nose. So clean, yet so tasty and powerful. Primarily toasty with caramel underneath. Big nuttiness with the hazelnuts contribution warmly welcomed.

3.5 M: Lighter medium to medium body. Active carbonation but within reason. A touch bity and only modestly creamy, but overall not bad.

4.5 D: Really loving this. If the mouthfeel was a bit better this could go on my "must-have" list.

Poured into a chilled glass from a 12 oz can. No distinct smell. The flavor wasn't too bad. No real hazelnut though that I could detect. The mouth feel was average. Overall okay but not great. I actually prefer Anchor California lager to the hazelnut brown ale. This is an odd statement from me because I generally enjoy the darker beers. Oh well. Now I know I won't be going out and trying to find a six-pack.
