This is a rich breakfast stout with a deep palate of taste, French roasted peaberry coffee, Madagascar vanilla beans, and cocoa nibs.

On draft at the brewery, served in shaker pint glass

Dark brown, not quite black. Cream colored head, good head retention and lacing. Pleasant coffee aroma, moderately roasty. Taste is slightly sweet, like a sugared coffee drink. Medium bodied, could be a little fuller bodied for the style for my liking.

On tap at River Rat

Ebony with reddish highlights, one finger tan head, full lacing curtains.
Coffee, cocoa, light smoky malt aromas.
Chocolate, coffee, light char, light fig, vanilla flavors
Smooth, medium feel, strong carbonation, light hop tingle, no alcohol heat
A beer that I have enjoyed since RR opened. Always consistently good.

Poured from a can into a pint glass.
Appears dark brown almost black. Tan foamy head that dropped into a nice cap.
Smells coffee, toasty, roasty, malty, slight vanilla notes.
Taste follows the nose with the coffee up front.
Mouth feel is medium for the style.
Overall, a very nice stout that would be even better with a little creaminess.
I might order again.

Unable to pour at all from my batch. No matter the angle or rate poured, the head instantly overtakes the glass (dry or wet). From the can, carbonation immediately fills the mouth, overpowering the flavors I assume may be there. It’s a shame, as this beer has all the right stuff - coffee, vanilla, and cacao.

Received from @Dragginballs76 in NBS BIF #6 – thanks Michael.
12 oz can dated 01/11/17. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 45 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Aroma – Coffee, a little roasted malt, and some very faint cocoa. As the glass warms, the cocoa predominates.
Head – Large (Maximum four cm, aggressive pour), tan, medium density, average retention, diminishing to an irregular three to six mm ring fed by effervescence and a rocky complete layer.
Lacing – Some wide partial rings of tiny to small bubbles.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque, effervescent.
Flavor – Weak coffee, no cocoa, a little vanilla on the aftertaste. Very slightly bitter, from either the coffee or the malt. No hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate – Medium, almost creamy, soft carbonation.

Impression: Average coffee stout. I am surprised that I could detect the vanilla in the aftertaste – usually I have difficulty picking out vanilla. To my taste, this is more like a brown ale than a stout.

Appearance 3.25, Aroma 3.75, Flavor 3.5, Palate 3.5, Overall 3.5.

12oz bottle into a pint glass
no bottling dates

A: Pour is black, with a lightening to brown when held to light. Lots of brown sedimentation flakes can be seen in the glass. Greater than 1 fingers width of tan colored head builds then dissipates at a moderate rate leaving a few small patches of lacing. 3.75

S: Aroma is roasty, decent amount of vanilla, stale blond roast coffee beans, and very subtle cocoa. Leather/tobacco notes round it out. 3.5

T: Taste is very roasty, leather, tobacco. Coffee is present, with a notable bitterness, but certainly isn't prominent. Vanilla/cocoa are essentially negligible. 3

M/D: Medium body, carbonation heavy for the style, drinkability is average. 3.25

O: Doesn’t pull off the “breakfast stout” profile very well, but a decent roasty, leather/tobacco forward stout. Not bad, but I wouldn’t run out to get it again. 3.25

A: The beer is black when viewed from afar, but when held up to the light it is clear dark brownish red in color. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that died down, leaving a patch of bubbles on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of cocoa nibs are present in the nose along with notes of coffee beans.
T: The taste follows the smell, except that the coffee flavors are a bit stronger and there are also notes of vanilla beans.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a little thin on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is isn't as bold as some of the other coffee stouts that I've had and is also somewhat light in body compared to what I would have expected. However, in this respect, it's not a bad selection for a morning beer as it isn't too heavy on the palate, but it's kind of like drinking a weaker blend of coffee from a gas station or a convenience store.
