Honored to be early reviewer of this best of Foreign Stout beer.
A) pours void of light - a dark deep black hole, with a tight one finger foamy head, and arcs of lacing on the glass.
S) Smells abundant of fall leaves, wood fire, char, smoke, chocolate, dark roast cold brew coffee, raisins, grass, earthy forest floor. Complex. Meditative.
T) Follows the smell with the right smokiness and dried prune / raisin fruit with chocolate, some grassy hops, ash. and roast coffee.
F) Full body, creamy, drying and toasty like a good stout
O) Try 24.

CAN
Viscous jet with pitted, clingy tan cream. 4.25
Cocoa, tar, Marmite, blood, and blackberry paste. 4.25
Black bread, ash, fig, dried black currant, molasses, a roasty bite, pine tar, and slight fruit comeback. 4
Brown sugar in coffee with cream linger, with clean bitterness.
Medium-full, chewy, round. 4

Pours evil black - thicker than an RIS. Blacker still to drink - char like dark pretzels - but unexpectedly sweetens up at the end. Foreign Export in ABV and hitting power, but missed the dryness and drinkability of the style, ultimately cloying. Guinness FES is more graceful. 4

The can label is right it is void of light but it's also void of much head as well.Aromas of cocoa powder and brown sugar mainly, slight earth shows thru as it sits more.A slick oily feel in the mouth, smooth but lacking a bit.Bitter chocolate, caramel, and earthy dryness on the palate, some raisin-like notes come thru as I drink more.I had higher hopes for this beer but it's not horrible,by the looks of other reviews it seems like I'am missing something though.

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a snifter. The appearance was a black color with a film of light tan foamy head. Quickly dissipated to leave some light lace. The aroma provided some roasty coffee tones, some leather, earthy hops and a little bit of dark chocolate and caramel malt blend. The flavor was roasty at first and then developed more of a light sweetness running through the blend. Light aftertaste of roast to sweet malts. Finish was the malts with a little bit more earthiness. The feel was about medium bodied with a good sipping quality about it. Light carbonation and the ABV felt right. Overall, pretty good imperial stout that I would have again.

On-tap at Hellcat Annie's.

A- Pitch black brew from the tap to a pint glass. Thick, creamy deep tan to brown head that rises up to an inch tall with good retention. Medium island remains atop the beer and lacing forms with sheets after many sips.

S- 75-80% dark cocoa with the good dark fruit notes found in those bitter chocolates. Deep roast but devoid of ashy burnt hints. Chocolate mostly but not sweet. Toast and medium roast coffee beans. A bit fudgey with freshly mashed sticky barley. Toasty nuts. Like a really bold, rich export stout.

T- Again rides the bitter, deep dark cocoa flavor profile into the sunset. Dry and dark roast barley but not burnt or acrid character. Medium dark roast fresh coffee beans, fudge, spiced-raisin, toast and toffee in harmony. Licorice comes out with time and overall it is on the dry side for such a flavorful dark brew.

MF- Thick and luscious body with a creamy texture that has plenty of chew to it. A medium level carbonation suits the rich cocoa. Ends with dark chocolate bitterness.

Imagine your average 5% export stout and make it drier, add ample dark chocolate notes and a very rich and creamy body and you end up here.

With coconut and cocoa nibs.

Pours a dark brown almost black.
Sweet chocolate, roasted malts, marshmallows, coconut, cream, cocoa. Thick body and low carbonation.

Overall a very good export stout.

Gun Hill Brewing is my local brewery and this is their flagship stout. Geographic loyalties aside, this is an incredibly fine example of the modern export stout style. It is near-black in color with a dense, creamy head. It smells of bitter chocolate, bbq smoke, roasted coffee, and toast. On the tongue, these aromas integrate into a creamy, smoky, molasses bomb. The beer is medium to full bodied.

Overall, this is a great go-to stout.

Black color on draft pour with dense tan head, good lacing. Roasted malt nose with a sweet note. Complex malt flavors covering char, chocolate, coffee, and residual sugar. Heavy feel and below average carbonation.

On tap at Rattle 'n Hum, NYC. As advertised this stien is 'void of light'. Black as night. Fine bubbled, thin head with a color that tips off the richness & coffee elements. Unlike many contemporaries the sweet is way uner control & all the tastes are there but in harmony.

At 7.9% & as balanced as this is a session labeling might be in order, but only for the strong of heart.
