Pours a beautiful thick looking pure black with a couple inches of brownish tan topper that relaxes in a few minutes to skim and ring. Pretty looking stout.
Cocoa and dark caramel, ashy roast and bitter, hints of coffee beneath it all. Medium strength but very alluring.
Pretty much a faithful rendition of the aroma that leads off with cocoa and ends fairly juicy, as the roast never gets bitter.
Creamy, medium carb., nicely viscous though also thin bodied enough to be easy drinking and refreshing.
Very tasty beer, recommended.

Black in color with a huge, beige head. Roasted malt and coffee in the aroma. Same notes in smooth taste with strong, roasted bitterness that lingers into aftertaste.

It pours black with a good sized light brown head. Nice aroma: dark chocolate & ripe fruit. Slightly bigger with a hint of sweetness. Flavors: dark chocolate, prune & ripe dark fruit, dark molasses, roasted grain, almost smoky. Medium thick feel with good carbonation. A delicious stout.

On draught at Hellcat Annie’s, NYC.
Pours an opaque black color, truly void of light as the name suggests. A creamy layer of mocha colored film retains well and leaves lacing.
Aromas of dark toasted malts, roasty and nutty. Notes of coffee, chocolate, caramel and toffee.
Good balance between sweet and roasty, with a late developing bitterness. Rich and chewy with notes of caramelized malts, and roasted barley. Flavors of honey biscuit, molasses, toffee, dark chocolate, dark fruit and a touch of licorice. Hops flavors are slightly earthy and woodsy, but also with a touch of honey sweetness. The finish is semi dry with a touch of alcohol sweetness and spice.
Full bodied and mouth coating. Very smooth and creamy with a moderately gentle carbonation.
I’ve reviewed some of Gun Hill’s Void of Light variants, and was surprised to see that I never got around to reviewing the original. Very solid overall with rich but balanced flavors.

Drinking this on tap at me local craft beer watering hole. A velvety glass of dark roasted, malty goodness. Thick and luscious feel with lots of coffee and mildly bitter chocolate notes. So easy to drink to you never notice the abv. So watch out and enjoy.

No mystery to this CAN's origins - it came from The Beer & Beverage Shoppe on Roseville Road. Gun Hill in LNC, PA?!? I LOVE their beers! They are truly in the heart of The Bronx & I'd like to visit, but it would certainly have to be in CANjunction with a Yankees game & probably a CouchSurf or hostel stay. Like I said, it is in the heart of the Bronx, so not an easy jaunt from Midtown, which is where I would arrive onna train. Enough geography & public trans talk - let's have a beer!

I Crack!ed open the vent & beCAN a slow, gentle C-Line Glug only to be met with a pseudo-cascade! 8=O I should have expected it, but I am not operating at my peak, having operated at the Post Office 10.5 hours/day, 6x/week. It settled into just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-brown head with excellent retention. Color was obsidian Black/Opaque (SRM = 44) & not only was there ZERO light penetration, but it was sucking light out of the room, dimming my kitchen. Welcome, Phil, Prince of Insufficient Light! Nose was deeply roasted, dark coffee-like, with notes of Baker's chocolate, charcoal smoke, anise, treacle & dried dark fruits. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but on the approach. The taste had a pronounced burnt-charcoal & Baker's chocolate flavor, underlain with everything from anise, treacle, toffee, dried dark fruits & even a mineral quality from the water, thrown in for good measure. That one is a bit tougher to quantify, but there was a slight salinity and the taste of hard water that I CAN remember as a kid. Some things never leave the memory banks. Finish was semi-dry with hardly any bitterness, making it excessively smooth & drinkable. 8=O This was going down WAY too easily! Score CANother win for Gun Hill. YMMV.

Void of light is an understatement. Blackest stout I've ever seen. Dark brown head. Malty cocoa aroma. Very rich and sweet malt body. Bitter cocoa finish. Smooth. A very good dessert stout.

Pours out like motor oil--greasy pitch black, no light comes through, with a foamy brown head. Most of the head quickly dissipates but a thin film remains.
The aroma is intense cacao and unsweetened dark chocolate, with some coffee beans and a hint of black licorice and umami.
Thick, rich, dark chocolate and roasted cacao nib flavors. Burnt toast, espresso, and roasted nuts. Some cashew and pecan and black coffee. A bit of umami and black licorice on the black end, with lingering bitter roasted bitterness.
Silky, oily, and slick mouthfeel. Well carbonated. Rich and filling.
Superb imperial stout.

Appearance: Pours espresso colored with a one finger tan head; strands of lacing all over the glass
Smell: Charred and chalky, with a baker's chocolate tone; just a hint of coconut
Taste: Chocolate forward with a charred and slightly coconut flavor building; earthy bitterness, through the middle, with the charred and chalky flavor lingering
Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation
Overall: I really enjoy the finish on this beer; complements the chocolate flavors nicely
