Appearance – A deep reddish brown colour like black tea. It had a thumb nail size head with good natural carbonation.

Smell – There is a floral element to the nose of this beer, it also boasts leafy freshness, apples and alcoholic hints from the yeast.

Taste – There is a really good sour apple flavour from the outset with this particular beer. There are also nice notes of toasted malts and good hopped depth to this beer. Unusually there is little sweetness in this one but it is balanced and does go down easy.

Mouthfeel – Sour and slightly astringent.

Overall – This beer is brewed in the traditional way that Clotworthy Dobbin would have used some 200 years ago. It has really good balanced flavour, although it is more towards the sour end of the scale than the sweet. The sourness works well with the apple taste of this beer.

Bottle at The Magpie Inn, Dalkey, Ireland

A: The beer is clear dark russet in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high beige head that died down and left a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of fruity yeast and dark and roasted malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of dark malts with hints of roast and notes of fruity yeast.
M: It feels nearly medium-bodied and slightly dry on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer blends interesting characteristics of dry roasted malts and fruity yeast.

500ml Bottle: BBD end of Jul 14, poured slowly into an 'Old Speckled Hen' vase shaped pint at home on 18th Oct 13. Brought back from Northern Ireland by my Son-in-Law last week.

Lovely looking brew: Mahogany, reddy brown body, clear and clean, on top a thin wispy off-white covering and collar. Plenty of carbonation bubbles rising through.

Aroma is malted nuts and toffee with attitude.

The taste is all malt flavours with caramel, toffee and candid fruits to the fore: behind comes an undertone of hop bitterness and woody notes.

Certainly different and interesting: good depth of flavours within the body and overall a fine beer.

A-light brown color with a nice light tan head and good lacing

S-caramel malt, fruit, hint of chocolate, nuts, little pine

T-caramel malt, light chocolate, nuts, hint of grapefruit, toasted bread, mild to moderate bitter finish

F-medium body with moderate carbonation, crisp

O-interesting ale but can't quite figure the style, seems a mixture to me and perhaps suffers some for it

BB Oct. 2013, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass.

A: dark brown in colour, coming with sporadic carbonation and no beer head.
S: fruity-malty on the nose, showing notes of brown malts, berry-ish sour-sweetness like prunes, and other acidic elements. Quite straight forward and simplistic, with a bit more sourness on the balance.
T: light smokiness and roastiness, bitter chocolates, wholemeal bread and brown malts follow the initial sour-sweet, dark berry fruity and raisiny palate, leading towards a long, dry, adequately bitter and slightly smoky finish. An earthy touch of hops is also noticeable at the back of the palate.
M&D: surprisingly light in body, reasonably smooth in carbonation, this medium-flavoured ale seems to fair more bitter and definitely more chocolate-malty than other Irish Red Ales I’ve tasted. It definitely drinks far better than it looks and smells.

This beer has a persistent head. It is quite a dark ale with a nose of plum pudding , coffee and sour citrus.

I drank it a little more chilled than it should be, so flavour was muted a little. Quite tart and hoppy. Nicely balanced. Merits your full attention - not a quaffing ale! Picked it up in a 5 for 10 sale. At this price I'd favour Hobgoblin for a more robust if less complex flavour.

Dark ruby with lumpy beige head that pits but fades without trails. Raisins, cinnamon, candy apple, some earth and oven fresh bread crust, - bold and bright.
Prune juice, hot buttered rum, roasted peanuts, poached pear, carob beans, a roasty hit in the middle, and some gentle orange pekoe tea hops.
Cranberry and chocolate finish and cleanly bitter linger. Medium, lots of chew, smooth.

For starters, Irish Red Ale is not the whole story. The brewery tags it as "ruby porter style", but is really just it's own man. Perfect example of brewing beers, not styles.

Plenty of roast and chocolate for the porter side but lots of fruit and nut show the Irish red influence, too. Hops show themselves in balance more than flavor since this one is all about malts. Considered by some to be the best beer made in Ireland, and they're not wrong.

Idiosyncratic, complex and delicious.

Chestnut brown in appearance with a thumb sized, foamy head that is off-white coloured and stays well.

Malts and caramel along with some medium strength bitterness and a light fruit aroma in the background. The beer is quite earthy with a nutty smell but overall it was nice, if a little weak.

Rich bitter malts and a hint of caramel along with some fruits and earthy malts along with a good nutty base. There was hints of grapefruit and citrus in there as well.

Smooth and with mild carbonation along with a light bitter and earthy feel to it. Quite subdued overall but it does have a nice mouthfeel.

A basic red ale though, and although one I would drink again it's not likely to be one of my regular beer and is by no means a classic.
