Included as part of @FlintB's endless generosity during NBS BIF#007.
2017 edition. Poured into a Speciation snifter.
Pour is just shy of black, like black coffee. A little thin appearing with a small ring of smoky brown curls gathered around edges. Barely a film over the top.

Nose is sweet vanilla and treacle up front. Maybe a touch of coffee char.

Flavour is an ever shifting phantasm of vanilla and molasses from the nose with a lightly smoky char, a touch of cocoa and a coffee bitterness that really plays together incredibly well.

Medium thin body with small prickly carbonation, the finish is sticky and a blend of coffee molasses and dark chocolate. Almost kind of reminds me of those Riesen candies.

This is a very tasty brew, and I am once again grateful to Brian for having sent it along for me to try. Thanks, man!

Loved the barrel aged version, the wife especially, so thought we would try this one out. What is interesting to me is how dry the finish on this is. As if the cinnamon is sticking to the roof of your mouth. Vanilla still the main star however. Looks amazing, smells great, tastes good, feel was ok.

22oz 2017 vintage bottle poured into a chalice boasts a light-eating, deep, dark, brown body with barely a whisper of miniscule tan bubbles on top. A spotted lacing runs back to the accepting body.

Beautiful, bold aroma of vanilla can be detected from arm's length. Melding with the vanilla is a nuttiness, stone fruit, oak, coconut, cocoa, and a hint of booze.

Flavors match, with the flavor of booze, and more chocolate especially at the finish. A really nicely crafted beer.

Mouthfeel is perfectly round, silky, and full, but not nearly heavy. A slight cocoa grit passes the tongue and leaves a drying chocolate aftertaste and chest warmth.

Overall solid. Glad to have tried it.

Short Review. I had this on tap at Hop Cat. This is a very good stout, I was impressed and I really enjoyed it. This was a good looking Stout, it was very dark and velvety. The aroma was very nice, big and robust, full of chocolate and robust roasted aromas and a little coffee. The taste was very good and similar to the aroma, nice decadent flavors that go really well together. The mouthfeel was very nice, it was super smooth for how strong it was and it had the body that a good stout should have. Overall I really liked this beer and It made for a very good first impression for this brewery. I hope this gets destributed soon and I really need to try the barrel aged version now.

Pours pitch black, shiny and completely opaque. One finger brown head dissipates steadily leaving no residual head or lacing.

Smell has strong notes of coffee, hints of vanilla and some roasted malts. Very coffee forward and roughly 8 months after bottling that coffee aroma is still holding up well.

Taste follows the nose with prominent notes of coffee, a bit of vanilla cream and some chocolate notes giving way to a nice smooth roasted malt finish. On the sweeter side overall.

Feel is smooth and moderately full bodied. Moderate carbonation.

Overall a nice stout from Transient - good coffee flavors here, but as stouts go, this was above average but not outstanding.

Brewed in collaboration with the Beer Cellar.

2016 vintage (released November 2016); drank 4/26/17 @ the Yarchives.

Black appearance. A rough pour yielded a nice, noisy dark khaki head; minimal lace.

Dark chocolate syrup, mild blackberry & faint vanilla notes in the nose.

Thick, sticky mouthfeel.

Dark chocolate syrup & mild raspberry flavors up front; vanilla & faint corn syrup notes on the finish. No booze heat.

Sweet & sticky; drinkable but not that good. I've had my last...

650ml bottle, 2016 vintage with the vanilla and coffee. Served in a snifter glass. Pours a dark black body, one finger mocha head, decent retention, not much lacing. Smells primarily of roasty coffee, milk chocolate, a bit of espresso, light earth, a touch of vanilla. It smells like a much more well-rounded Buckley without the maple syrup, really. The coffee works well here. Flavour is also fairly heavy on the coffee, a bit more bitter espresso, milk chocolate, a bit of roasted malt, a bit of dark fruit, a hint of marshmallow on the finish that lingers as more of a mouthfeel component. Medium-fuller bodied, good carbonation, overall mild coffee bitterness on the finish. A good beer with plenty of coffee on board with the vanilla coming into play near the end of the mouthfeel.

650ml bottle, 2017 vintage. Served in a snifter glass. Pours a dark black body, cola brown head, one finger white head, medium collar, not much lacing. Smell is heavy roast, black coffee, milk chocolate, vanilla bean. Flavour is a clean vanilla sweetness, milk chocolate, coffee, heavy roast, a bit of marshmallow on the backend. Mouthfeel is medium fuller bodied, good carbonation, smooth and creamy, slight burnt marshmallow finish.

A - Pitch black pour with a thin toffee colored lacing ring. Lots of legs on the sides of the glass when it's swirled.

S - Chocolate, cocoa, molasses, light traces of bourbon and oak.

T - Cocoa, powder, chocolate, molasses, vanilla, oak, bourbon, and coconut. Alcohol effervescence pops through just slightly.

M - Heavy body, thick, silky, velvety, lip smacking sticky.

O - This is a nice barrel aged stout.

22 oz. bottle, no bottled date. 2015 vintage. Transient Artisan Ales collaboration with The Beer Cellar in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. "Ale brewed with cinnamon, vanilla, coconut, & molasses added".

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a thick pitch black body, slick and opaque in the glass, with less than a finger of dark mocha head that settles in as a ring and leaves minor intricate strands of lace. Looks good per the style.

S - An interesting aroma: lots of big roasty black malts, notes of black coffee, char, & dark fruits in the vain of plums, figs, dates, and raisins. Musty, with notes of old wood in there somewhere. Notes of molasses sweetness are noticeable, but i'm not pulling out anything in the way of vanilla or coconut. It's pretty nice.

T - Taste follows the nose: definitely very interesting stuff. Dark bitter roasty malts, notes of bitter baking chocolate and black coffee. Notes of dark fruits come next (plum, raisin, figs, dates, berries). With smooth notes of creamy vanilla & cacao near the end. Subtle hints of toasted coconut do make an appearance from time to time, but it's not the most prominent. Vanilla bean comes through more smooth & creamy as the beer drinks on (extract?). I detect only very minor notes of cinnamon on the end, that becomes more pronounced as the beer warms.

M - Feel is very smooth & creamy, dark, bitter, & roasty. Lingering notes of chocolate and black coffee on the finish, with mild lingering creamy vanilla / coconut flavors. Full-bodied with good carb. Goes down exceptionally smooth for such high abv; doesn't drink like a 13.00% abv beer at all.

Overall, a decent stout, but aging this stuff in some nice bourbon barrels would really give it that extra oomph and give it the time to mellow and mature that it really needs. As it is, it's alright. Would love to see some of this aged in barrels.

The beer pours out in a oily black color with a small dark brown head after a swirl.

The aroma offers a kiss of cinnamon, medium sweet coconut, vanilla sweetness, umami, spice, rich dark chocolate, intense roast, some caramel sweetness.

The flavor follows with that sweetness up front of toasted coconut and vanilla without overwhelming the beer, surrounded by dark chocolate, caramel sweetness, hints of cinnamon spice, onto a dark roasty char, burnt flavors, molasses, espresso bitterness.

The mouthfeel is full, while still moving along the palate and offering a velvety mouthfeel without being overly chewy and mouth coating.

22 ounce bottle into a snifter.

Pours an opaque, dark brown, with a one inch dark tan head, some lacing. The smell leads with roasted malt, vanilla, a little chocolate, light coconut. Also cinnamon and molasses-more as it warms, especially the molasses. The taste also leads with roasted malt- more than the nose, vanilla, cinnamon, pretty strong molasses, light chocolate. The coconut seemed to drop off. Smooth, full bodied, good level of carbonation, the taste lingers.

Very enjoyable effort, the flavors were well blended, distinct and prominent. Great body and feel.

Poured from 22 oz bomber into snifter.

A: Dark black with 1-2 finger mocha head. Nice retention and lacing.

S: Roasty malts, chocolate, vanilla, and molasses. Maybe the slightest hint of some coconut.

T: Rich dark chocolate, vanilla, and roasted malts with sweet molasses. Faint coconut that becomes more apparent as it warms.

M: Full bodied with a silky texture.

O: Excellent imperial stout but I wished the cinnamon and coconut were more pronounced.

22oz bottle from IAmJacksHopTongue (thanks man!). 2015 vintage. Served in a goblet.

Pours pitch black with a finger and a half pale mocha head. The foam fades to a clumpy belt that leaves a few flakes of lacing.

Smells of roasted malt, dark chocolate, vague cinnamon, cereal grain, burnt caramel, faint vanilla and a little residual alcohol.

Flavors start off bold and roasty. Dark cocoa, heavily roasted malt, burnt caramel and black coffee. Around mid palate the adjuncts make an appearance. Cinnamon, earthy sweet molasses and vague hints of both vanilla and coconut. There is an alcohol heat but less than expected from the 13% abv.

Creamy, dense body with soft carbonation. Aftertaste of vaguely spiced bittersweet dark chocolate fudge.

Neckbeard Nectar is definitely a solid imperial stout but the adjuncts are not quite present enough to be showcased. I'm not sure if I held out on this one a little too long or if the vanilla and coconut are just incredibly subtle. Either way, this is still enjoyable in its own right. Just don't age this if you are wanting anything other than a bold, deep stout.

Motor oil thick. Really coats the glass. Wispy brown lacing on a pitch black stout. Scent is mostly roast with some spice. Flavor is bitter roast and rich. Hints of cinnamon on the front end. Some coconut oil on the finish as it warms.

L - Deep black with a thin light brown head
S - Coconut, vanilla, cinnamon, maple
T - Baker's chocolate, cinnamon, coconut, marshmallow, vanilla, rich and roasty
F - Surprisingly smooth given the high abv, leaves a nice coating without feeling too sticky, not too overpowering
O - All of the adjuncts come through and blend well together, loving how balanced this is even though there is a lot going on. Coconut comes to the front as it warms.

Huge roasted malt bitterness. The spices balance with the base. Although, that bitterness overtakes most of the spice flavors. Little to no sweetness. Super dry finish. Pairs extremely well with Cinnamon Bun Oreos. Wishing this had a touch of sweetness but overall it's pretty good.

Note: This beer pairs well with Cinnamon Bun Oreo Cookies.

Midnight black body with a thick cap of head. Normal stout flavors and smells; roast malt mostly and a bit of chocolate sweetness. Not smelling and tasting much of the adjuncts, but the molasses is distinct. Mouthfeel is very nice and you cant tell that you are drinking a 13% abv stout because it drinks like it is 9%.

2015 bottling.

A: Pitch-black pour. Mid-sized dense dark brown head. Great thin sheets of lacing and quite decent head retention.

S: Big cinnamon, vanillla and chocolate. No coconut but as soon as I swirl it it's there. Funny. Big and sweet.

T: Oh yeah. Very heavy cinnamon up front. Almost get some legit heat there's so much of it. Lots of sweet vanilla with backings of roasty chocolate. No real sign of coconut that I can discern. The aftertaste has some sort of almost burnt sweetness. I assume the molasses?

M: Heavy, sweet and smooth.

O: An interesting stout. Loads of cinnamon and with the molasses, it actually borders on a winter spiced stout. Especially since I really don't get any coconut. Flavors are great though and the mouthfeel is excellent. A big, smooth roasty monster with some excellent flavor additions.

Fantastic beer.. dark as night. Lots of cinnamon spice and molasses sweetness on the nose.. Mouth feel is good. Not overly thick.. perhaps some age in a barrel would bring that.. Great melding of all the flavors.. toasted coconut, sweet molasses and some chocolate presence.. Have a couple more bottles and looking forward to them greatly after this first exposure.

Overall, Neckbeard Nectar is a solid stout. Too often we are disappointed by stout; this will definitely not disappoint...

L - Black as night; dark khaki head/lacing.

S - Not much to the nose...can pick up on some molasses and vanilla bean.

T - Sweetness on the front of the palate that leads to a great cinnamon-vanilla flavor with just a hint of coconut. Great roast on the finish with some dark, bitter chocolate coming through. Very well balanced.

F - Medium bodied. I personally enjoy a lot of body in an imperial stout, so don't let this discourage you.

Overall, I would love to see this out of a barrel. I think if they amped it up a bit, this stout would stand up well to the bourbon and produce something absolutely world class. Regardless, hopefully they make this one next year - will buy again.
