22oz bottle poured into a snifter
Acquired around 2017
A- pours black in color with a one-finger creamy dark brown head that has good retention before settling into a ring around the glass
S- rich coffee on the nose with aromas of dark chocolate, blueberries & anise. Notes of maple, vanilla cream, charred malt, brown sugar and plenty of oaky bourbon barrel to close it out
T- herbal and peppery espresso with rich notes of dark chocolate up front, followed by bold barrel notes that add barrel juice, oak and caramel. Vanilla cream, brown sugar and brownie batter add to the mid-palate. The finish gives mocha cream, espresso and more barrel, that sticks around in the linger
M- Medium body with low carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that turns slightly creamy into a warming finish
O- bold coffee, plenty of barrel and a solid base beer, very good

Fresh on tap this is better than expected. Nothing about the look is particularly special—black and shimmery with no head retention. Aroma is mostly coffee, with maple sweetness and faint maltiness. The taste is permeated by coffee, with maple syrup, vanilla, Kentucky bourbon barrel, and slight roasted malt. Feel is medium to thick. I have to disagree with a previous review that the coffee is subdued; at least on tap the coffee is the strongest flavor. Overall this is an exceptional beer. I am pleasantly surprised by the barrel aspect. I expected an aggressive and overly whiskey barrel flavor, but, in actuality, while there is a noticeable cherry oak flavor, it is very balanced and in harmony with the other flavors.
