no doubt this is excellent imperial ipa, no debate at all, but is it really close to perfect? absolutely not. i think the hype around these guys is really well founded, i mean, all of their beer is good, some is elite level, but sometimes the hype goes to far, you know, the falling rock crew starts telling people how good superpower is, and then this comes out, and its better than younger? its just unreasonable fetishism, and i dont think it does much for the brewery, having people go in expecting the world, this isnt even close to the best big ipa on the market. sure its much better than most other from denver, including those from the big boys, but its absolutely not younger level. lets start with the positives, its nice and clear, radiant golden, light for the style in color, and holds a solid white head. it smells like cutting into a fresh pineapple, as much pineapple as i have ever smelled in a beer, but i cant pick the hop strains out right away. the taste is pineapple too, more like juice from the can this time, a little sweet, but great balancing bitterness arises in the finish. clean and light and the alcohol is well hidden, shocked to see its as strong as it is. now the negative. to me, this beer is thin. there is very little appreciable grain character, and not enough body for the bold hop flavors, even though they are delicate too. its not watery, but its definitely light. its also not all that distinct, once you get past the pineapple. i mean, its not quite one dimensional, its too good for that, but it isnt rewriting the script either. for me, its hard to talk negatively about a beer that i give a 4.25 out of 5 overall, but the hype for these guys is getting obnoxious, this is not the next russian river or alchemist here. i sure hope they grow into that, how wonderful it would be, but they are still a long long way off, and we do a disservice to all of beer to equate this to beers like that...

Last keg on tap at the brewery. There was a lot of online hype about this beer but Ii like superpower so I figured I better get a glass of this before it is gone. Clear, golden, orange, looks good. Aroma is very pungent, fruits like pineapple or peaches. Flavor is extremely bitter and fruity at the same time, its good. Is it as good as Pliny the Elder or the Younger? No. It is quite good and one of the better double IPA's in Colorado.

Update 08/31/15

This batch is fantastic.

Wow! I knew Comrade and Superpower were something special but Hop Chops is amazing. The balance and incredible hop flavor is remarkable. Replaces Pliny the Elder as best beer I ever had.

Colorado's got a legit West Coast style hoppy beer spot now.

The big boy on the block from Comrade
Nice pour. Excellent color and clarity. Dense foam with nice lacing. Looks yum!

Well, hop aroma of course. A combo of tropical and citrus with a bit of 'green'. Slight biscuit on the back nose

Flavor is not balanced...hops dominate, but not to the syrup or resin levels. Citrus with tropical, hint of grassiness. clean.

The feel is this beer's weakness...if there is one. It's hoppy and does have a bite. I would like a drier finish as it seems a bit thick. Maybe it's me....I'll have to have several more to nail it down

UPDATE: Ok, my second time around; a week+ later. The finish seems drier this time with a touch of juiciness. Many are trying to compare/contrast this with PtYounger. To me, Younger is way thin and super dry and boozy. This one may not have the exact hop profile, but it's "meatier" and doesn't evaporate like Younger. Easy drinking.

I thought that Pliny, Heady was the best double IPA until I tried Hop Chops.

Very similar to Stone Ruination 2.0. The lemondrop comes through. Very bitter. Dry. Dank. Crystal clear appearance. Really nice but possibly a touch too abrasive.
