Old Bust Head Brewing Co.
Virginia, United States

Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.10%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Rich and full bodied, our Chinquapin Chestnut Porter is sure to please fans of more robust beer styles. Not content with just paying homage to the American Chestnut, or Chinquapin, by name, every batch of Chinquapin Chestnut Porter is made with a heaping portion of real chestnuts. Brewed together with a blend of dark malts, our porter has hints of cocoa, roasted malts, coffee, and, of course, hearty and sweet chestnuts. As a thank you to the tree that makes the smooth, nutty taste of our porter possible, a portion of the proceeds from Chinquapin Chestnut Porter will be donated to The American Chestnut Foundation, where it will be used to help reintroduce American Chestnut trees to the forests of the Eastern United States.

Pours a very dark brown and leaves a great lacing around the glass. The nose is incredible. You pick up the scent of chestnuts, and hints of chocolate, coffee and molasses. The smell is out of this world. I was surprised that the mouthfeel felt a bit thin, but I liked it that way. The taste was solid as well and was very malty, just like a porter should be. This is another great into to dark beers for those who are only using to trying a Kolsch, Pilsner, etc.

Again, I think this is smart marketing for a new brewery to appeal to the masses. OBH is attracting a new crop of beer drinkers that may not usually drink craft beers or any beer whatsoever. All of the beers appeal to males and females alike. Looking forward to their future brews.

Poured on tap in a shaker pint, the beer is a light brown coloring with a filmy, low profile, off white head. Aromas of rich toffee and chocolate, vanilla cream, and earthy highlights. Very smooth. Flavors are a little more heavily roasted, with toffee and nut sweetness blending with bitter coffee and chocolate. Smooth and dry bodied, with a roasted, creamy sweet blend in the aftertaste. Smooth, dry finish, with a bitter roasted coffee linger. Very nice.

On tap:
Sits damn near black in the snifter, but inspection of the edges shows a clearness that exposes the chestnut brown color as well (can actually see light looking down the glass). Head can be seen being fed, medium ring of off white head with a lasting swath across the top.

Nose is coffee to cacao-based chocolate, maybe a hint of like hazelnut flavored coffee.

Taste thankfully does not follow the nose closely. Not that it might not be enjoyable, but it would not seem like a chestnut porter. The opening note has maybe a light coffee note, but really has a classic dark malt bitterness. There does seem to be some non-malt bitterness early, too. Woody to grassy, but balanced against the dark malt.

The chestnut (and though I am no expert, it dies remind me of chestnuts) comes in mid-taste, even though a nutty oiliness is detected earlier. Before getting to the end, there is even a splash of almost sweetness. Lingering notes of the skin of a medium to dark but. Feel is slightly oily in the end, but carbonation may hide this earlier.

Had this at the brewery and recalled enjoying it. I thought it was close to a nut brown ale, maybe even more than a porter (and that's fine with me), but upon inspection, I think that bitterness up front that plays in the whole taste is more porteresque. Either way, confirmed I enjoyed this beer.
