Wanderer - Shoe Toss IPA

Pours a fairly clear brassy copper hue, topped with two fingers of dense off-white head with decent retention, leaving some lacing as it recedes.

Nose: A subtle bed of caramel malt and pale grains sit beneath a very lovely bouquet of hops. Aromas of Douglass For needles, lemon zest, lemongrass, bergamot, a touch of white grapefruit, and this very nice little spice component that makes me think there may be some rye in here. Dried orange peel, a whisper of licorice, and some really intense floral notes that almost lends a potpourri quality to it.

Palate: That caramel malt lends just a touch of sweetness, while some pale grainier notes balance it out. The hops instantly give off a PNW vibe with tons of pine. Lemon zest, tangerine, grapefruit, leafy whole cone hops, and a touch of lime work together to create a bright, lively profile. The finish sees some of those spicier notes, bitter hop resins, grapefruit pith, and some nice floral elements. Lightly to moderately bitter - drying.

Mouthfeel/Body: The beer is medium-bodied, with the caramel malt adding just a touch of weight. Otherwise, the beer is actually incredibly crisp, fluid, and pretty refreshing. The malt is balanced and restrained, allowing the brightness of the hops to really shine. The effervescence is pretty average, maybe just a slight touch lacking, but the beer remains bright and snappy. The hops provide a pretty dry finish.

Overall: This is a great beer. Not only does it capture the crisp drinkability of a West Coast IPA, but it has that little special something to let it stand out in a crowd. The unique spiciness, the intense floral notes, the bright citrus zest and lemongrass, and the subtle little notes that seem fairly unique to this. I see no occasion where this wouldn't be a homerun choice.

This beer was a beautiful amber color capped by a thick white head when poured. Definitely an awesome beer and I'll be looking for another bottle when I'm back in the Pacific NW next month. All the flavors really come together to form a cohesive unit. I'm way higher than the average but I don't care! Poured from a 500 ml bottle into a spiegelau IPA glass.

Poured into a snifter. Clear amber color with a generous light tan head. Aroma was mainly pine. Spicy rye malt was also there. The malt was up front on the taste. Not sure if the age of this bottle. A nice bitter pine/earthy presence followed. Medium bodied and crisp. Overall a nice beer by a bit on the malty side.

Fresh growler from the brewery; 6.8% ABV. Nice balance between a classic west coast IPA and a rye beer, with the emphasis being more on the former than the latter. Orange gold pour with a medium head. Mostly pine, grass on the nose. Taste of pine and grapefruit with lingering bitter finish. Rye manifests itself with a crisp bite that finishes dry. Great beer.

A 500ml bottle with no apparent date, but I trust the freshness and the person that sent it to me. The abv. on the label differs from the listing at 6.8%. Pouring it in my Weyerbacher tulip for the review.

Look- Pours a transparent amber color leaving a creamy fat two fingers of white foam. It settles to ring the glass leaving plenty of lacing.

Smell- Rye spice, some grapefruit and cereal.

Taste- Grapefruit to begin followed by a heavy floral presence. A hint of orange zest and finally some rye in the finish.

Feel- Very slick and light on the palate with a little bitterness and a dry finish.

Overall- A very beautiful appearance and while the smell is weak, the flavor delivers a nice mix of citrus and floral notes in a palate pleasing beer. A well done rye IPA that's definitely worth buying.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium coppery amber with a half finger white head with good retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of bready malt with bit of caramel, nice light rye spice and tartness, citrus hops. Flavor is pale malt with a hint of biscuit, rye bread, piney and citrus hops, grapefruit rind. Hops develop and meld with the rye for a pleasant citrus hop and rye spicy finish. Medium bodied with good carbonation. A really nice rye IPA. The integration of the lightly tart and spicy rye with the citrus hops is excellent and increases to a great finish. I'm a big fan of rye IPAs and this is one is at the top of my list now. Well done.

What a beautiful pour–– Clear amber with a tall, long-lasting head in the Stella Artois goblet. Rather acidic with the rye adding that scratch in the back of the throat. The aroma is fruity and spicy. Highly carbonated.

Some malty sweetness and a touch of roasted grain. The hops are fragrant with citrus peel, papaya, and a touch of green pepper. This is a very friendly and easy to drink hoppy beer. Distinct rye flavor after some sipping, with the distinctive bitter aftertaste and spicy notes. From the 750 ml bottle purchased at the brewery in Bellingham.

Hazy orange with a touch of amber, soapy 1.5 fingers of head. Tropical fruit juice and spicy rye on the nose. Taste is sweet toasty pale malts and a bit of spicy rye, candied tropical fruit ...I make it sound sweeter than it is. It's very well balanced with some nice bitterness in the finish. Medium body, soft medium carbonation. Nice stuff.

Served in a pint glass at the brewery. Glowing orange with slight haze. Citrus on the nose and loads of grapefruit sensation on the palate. Bitterness is well balanced with the 7.0% ABV. Not a large rye sensation but does finish crisp and dry.
