Sampled on tap at Craft Beer Market during my latest trip to Calgary. This is a lovely looking and smelling beer - everything a Schwarzbier should be. The roasted malt, hints of mocha and ash, along with mild bittering make this a tasty bird indeed.

12oz glass at Last Best's shiny new brewpub.

This beer appears a clear, dark ruby brown hue, with one finger of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly beige head, which leaves some attractive eroding limestone cliff lace around the glass as things quickly progress.

It smells of roasted, semi-sweet caramel malt, muddled black orchard fruit, a bit of wet ash, a touch of dry root beer, subtle mocha notes, and soft earthy, weedy, and floral hops. The taste is bready, gritty toasted caramel, a further graininess, bittersweet cocoa, burnt dirt, still indeterminate dark fleshy fruit, and a more peppy weedy and grassy hop bitterness.

The carbonation is easy-going in its plainly supportive frothiness, the body a solid medium weight, and mostly smooth, just a hint of ash attempting to spoil the party. It finishes fairly dry, both the roast and the hops pulling strongly in that direction.

A decent example of the style, for all the reasons previously stated - well-rounded, and tasty enough. The ashiness might drag a bit if I were to get another, so good thing there's so much other choice available here.

Enjoyed a pint on tap at a Calgary pub. Arrived a dark cola brown grading into black with a light smattering of beige bubbles.

Nice roasted aroma recalling black coffee and singed grain, with a hint of milk chocolate and red fruit, topped off with a graceful noble hop grassy note. Wonderful depth of flavor that immediately evokes a classic schwarzbier vibe but with some bells and whistles. Light bodied and highly drinkable, no hugely sweet or bitter flavors but rather some subdued coffee and cocoa character. Grassy noble hops add to the dry character, although there is a nice cherry gum-like fruitiness lurking in the background that makes this one unique in the style space. A milk chocolate sweetness also winks in and out. Smooth and creamy with moderate carbonation and a dry finish, vaguely fruity with no wood char.

Tasty brew from a local outfit that I will endeavor to support. We need our pubs to tap brews besides the usual macro-brewed pap and Granville Island. There's no excuse for not going local, except maybe Big Rock (I kid, I kid). This beer is a classic "true to style" offering that deserves one's attention.

On tap at Craft Beer Market in Calgary. First time for me getting to try something from local brewer Last Best.
Pours a dark brown with reddish highlights, could almost be mistaken for a Coke. Cream colored head lasts nicely, thin sheets of lace.
Smell of roasted malts, roasted malts, cocoa, and a little bit of smoke.
Taste starts with lots of roasted grains, chocolate, light coffee notes. A bit of herbal hops in the finish. Long lasting smoke finish.
Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation, thinner than expected from the color. Smooth and easy to drink, dry finish.
Well balanced, good to style, a nice surprise.

On tap at National on 10th in Cowtown.

Appearance - Pours a dark cola brown with reddish highlights and a finger width of cream-coloured head.

Smell - Roasted malts, bitter floral hops, toasted grains, hint of cocoa and dark caramel.

Taste - Medium-low bitterness from the roasted malts and floral hops, along with a hint of sweetness from the dark caramel and cocoa. Predominately malt based flavour.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a bit of a dry finish.

Overall - An easy-to-drink, balanced black lager by Last Best. Sticks pretty true to the style in regards to its toasted/roasted malt base and mild hop bitterness. Nice touch of dark caramel flavour to sweeten up this brew.
