Bowen Island Artisan IPABowen Island Artisan IPA

Brewed by:
Bowen Island Brewing Co. Ltd.
British Columbia, Canada

Style: English India Pale Ale (IPA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Defined by its distinct flavour profile and higher level of alcohol, the Bowen Island India Pale Ale has a light golden colour and a hoppy aroma. You will notice a hoppy bitterness to begin with, followed by a medium level of maltiness and body. It finishes with a refreshingly fruity grapefruit flavour. This IPA will taste more reminiscent of your classic, authentic English IPA, rather than a North American style IPA.

Clear golden yellow appearance with lots of bubbly white head that slowly settles down leaving no lacing. Smell consists of bread, grain, and a hint of malt.

Taste consists of bread, malt, butter and strong hint of grassy hops; picked up a hint of caramel as well. Not a bad combination, a little light though. Light bodied with low carbonation. Aftertaste is a strong bitter malt taste.

Overall, this is a decent IPA for its price. Nothing spectacular but it is refreshing and tasty. If you’re on a budget and a fan of hopped beers, pick this up.

355ml can - nice background image of Bowen Island, the actual island.

This beer pours a mildly hazy, medium golden amber hue, with three fingers of foamy, rocky, and rather impressively retentive eggshell-white head, which settles at a pretty lazy pace, leaving some wild sea-spray lace around the glass.

It smells of bready, crackery caramel malt, aged, indistinct sweet citrus, and further innocuous earthy, weedy hops. The taste is again big on the somewhat sour bready caramel malt, with a touch of bitter lemon tea, musty honey, and tame earthy, floral hops.

The carbonation is on the low side of average, the body a pithy medium weight, yet quite adequately smooth by the same token. It finishes off-dry, the malt giving way to a kind of intrusive vegetal hoppiness.

While not what I imagine when I envision an "artisanal" IPA, this is still a pleasantly drinkable English version of the style, much like training wheels for newcomers, or whatnot. With a very subdued bitterness, this is a steal at less than 8 bucks a 'sextant of ale', for those who might not yet be ready for that other sort of BC hop goodness, one more in line with their direct southern neighbours.

A - bright clear golden, two fingers of soapy white head had decent retention
S - bread and tortilla grainy, faint leafy hops with a slight metallic
T - starts with buttery bread malt, then a mild leafy and grassy hop character, finishes with a crisp and slightly metallic note
M - well carbonated, lightly bready, dry's quickly to the point of puckering, and a metallic twinge comes through
O - not an outstanding IPA but tasty enough, and given the price it is not a bad value sessioner

Appearance. Pours a clear, gold-amber with a finger of foamy white head that leaves some decent lacing.

Smell. Sweet caramel grains, some lemon and pink grapefruit with a little pine.

Taste. Caramel, toasty grains, pink grapefruit and fairly mild, spicy and earthy hops.

Mouthfeel. Just above light in body with medium carbonation.

Overall. Decent, easy drinking beer with nice flavours. Not really an IPA, but not a pale ale either. I'll call it a session ipa, and in that catagory it's a pretty good beer.

This beer looks OK, with a golden-amber color, no head to speak of, and a bit of white lacing. However, it's downhill from there. The smell is minimal. The taste is over sweet (honey) and under hoppy. There's a tinny metallic finish to the beer. Overall, it's not pleasant, and I couldn't drink as much as half the 12 ounce can. The rest was a drain pour.

I see that some reviewers emphasize how cheap this beer is. Well, I paid nothing, as it was a gift from a friend who had been visiting BC and returned to Seattle. Even at free to me, I didn't think it was worth it!

A: golden with copper hints.
S: stale. Flat. Nothing.
T: very mild; little bitterness, more like a pale ale, not much at all
M: carbonation is fine; on the low side
O: too bad I bought a six pack. Very forgettable beer. It's been a while since I tried a beer from Bowen Island and based on this Artisan one I won't be trying another one soon. Too bad.

At less than $C9 per six pack, for my money this is the best BC budget beer by miles. Of course "Bowen Island" is made at the Kamloops factory brewery, but what the hell. The rest of the line is very bland indeed, but they seem to have to put some effort into this one. Not yet available at gummint liquor stores (except in a mixed 12 pack) but is in most of the private outlets.

1. Can
2. Maximum bang for the buck

Cons: No cons, in fact. There is nothing special about this English IPA. Perhaps I am biased against the style.

Very pale, plenty of head, good retention & lace.

Not overpowering, but some nice floral & citrus American hop aroma.

This would be considered quite good for a pale ale, but it's really not an IPA by todays standards. Some nice leafy hop, a little grainy biscuit, restrained bitterness.

Very light for an IPA, carbonation is a little high.

An easy drinking, sessionable beer in a can. It's alright, but there's just so many other alternatives in BC. Great bang for the buck though!

A - Pours a crystal clear golden colour, finger of light big bubbly head with some retention and sporadic sticky lacing.

S - A tad mild, some musty cedar hops are noticeable off the top, a bit soapy, with bready caramel undertones on the finish.

T - Mild earthy hops off the top, bitterness is present, buttered bread and caramel follow through. A sour pine flavour lingers on the palette.

M - Lighter bodied ale, though it goes down a bit prickly and finishes a touch too dry for my liking.

O - A tasty IPA that I wouldn't turn down, and at $7.50 a 6-er, it is certainly the most full flavoured cheap beer I've ever had. I think I've got a new favourite discount ale! By no means a hop bomb, but they're definitely detectable. I've certainly had worse IPA's at much higher price tags. Well done Bowen Island!

Bowen Island IPA pours a orange gold with a foamy head that lingers nicely. The aroma is citrusy and herbal hops. More grapefruity hops in the flavor, with some faint malt sweetness. The bitterness is moderate the finish and a nice resiny bitterness lingers just a bit. Overall a pretty decent value priced IPA.

355ml can poured into pint glass May,3,2011

A clear golden yellow with lots of bubbles feeding a finger of fast falling head that leaves no lace

S some honey, sweet malt and just a little citrus and tea bag

T not far from the smell, needs more hops to form a balance with all the sweet malt, not exactly what I look for in an IPA

M enters silky and then creams up in your mouth almost turning to foam

O pretty basic but drinkable

considering it's 8$ a 6er I can't complain, don't think I've ever had a discount brand IPA and it could have been much worse, average beer for well below average price worth a try between paydays
