On-tap at Gastown brewpub with Tiggmtl. This is now the Expresso Stout. chocolate colour, a little mocha head. Favourful though medium mouthfeel. Way too much coffee and coffee grains.Lots of expresso, but a fair only RIS.There is malt, but maybe more balance required.

Draft at Alibi Room, 9% ABV. Body is black as pitch with a thin tan head that recedes to a collar. Sweet espresso and cream on the nose, moderately roasty and acidic with a molasses backbone. Palate has an intense espresso character, like a chocolate covered espresso bean. Light acidity is noticeable from the coffee and dark malt, but it's backed by a substantial malt foundation. Bit of fruitiness comes out toward the end, somewhat currant-like, with lingering espresso. The finish isn't terribly bitter, it's more like a sweet espresso. Really decent stuff.

Pours black. No head, just a slight ring.

Aroma of coffee is dominant. Dark malts.

Taste is bitter, licorice, dark malts, coffee. Surprisingly, has a lot going on in the taste. Very interesting.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, cleansing. Also surprising since it couldn't muster a head. Perhaps it was served too cold.

Overall, very interesting. Very drinkable. Give it a try.

Sampled at Victoria's Great Canadian Beer Fest.

Steamwork's website describes this hard to come by brew as an "espresso stout" and this is the perfect description. Black as coffee with a very thin coffee and cream head. Smells like malts, roasted coffee beans and hints of chocolate.

The taste is like a chocolate covered coffee bean. Strong coffee notes, detectable chocolate with a backing of malt. Thick, but not cloying. Easy to drink, like a good mug of coffee.

I frequented Steamworks at least twice a month for four months hoping to get this and was told it was made very rarely, so to find this at the beer fest (in place of their regularly available Oatmeal Stout) was quite a surprise.

This was at GCBF 2007 in place of the advertised Heroica Oatmeal Stout. In 2006, the Heroica Oatmeal Stout was advertised and available. It seems to be a trend that every other year Steamworks offers this as a "surprise" beer and replace their Oatmeal stout with this. I asked the Steamworks people and the server I talked to told me he's been with Steamworks for 4 years and has only ever seen this twice, both times for only a few weeks.

Half pint at the brewpub. From notes. 9%ABV.

A - Poured black with no carbonation, one finger of light brown head leaving spotty lace and a film of retention.

S - Tons of coffee with some chocolate and roasty/flakey notes.

T - Lot's of coffee but starts sweet then punches you with java. Flaked black/burnt/roasted malt as well.

M - Medium body and medium carbonation with a bitterness in the finish.

O/D - Not a bad Imperial Stout but certainly not one to write home about. A valiant effort that fell short in the end by lacking depth and just being overly coffee-like. Tasty, yet lacking.
