Our North by North West IPA pays tribute to the famous craft brewing region we call home, featuring malt and hops sourced from the Pacific Northwest. This clean hop intensive brew features strong dank, pine and citrus notes up front and finishes dry with a moderate bitterness.

Clear yellow-amber color. Very thick head that turned into larger bubbles as it slowly collapsed. Left a lot of lacing on the side of the glass, typically large voids with fine bubbles around. Medium flux of fine bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass.

Lighter floral hop smell with a bit of dried straw or hay. Some very faint yeast esters. Swirling the glass kicked up something sweet and floral. Perhaps a bit of citrus.

Mild citrus and floral hops in the initial flavor. A bit of graham cracker malt in the base. Medium-mild bitters slowly blend in. The straw or hay flavor shows up late. The aftertaste is mostly the floral hops and hay.

Medium carbonation; no tongue action. Turns into a coarse bubbled foam. Medium body.

Excellent back to basics IPA. The lighter bitters (seems much milder than what is listed on the label) make this an all season drink.

The overall drinking experience was great. Full body, amazingly crisp and soft in the mouth at the same time. The taste was almost a little scotchie. I loved the reddish amber colour.

Steamworks Brewpub 'North by Northwest IPA' @ 6.8% , served from a 473 ml can
A-pour is light gold from the can to a clear gold in the glass with a medium size white head leaving a spotty lace along the tulip
S-dank
T-clean & crisp PNW IPA , decent malt base , lots of hops (pine mostly)
MF-ok carbonation , big medium body
Ov-something lacking from this drinkable PNW IPA , just no wow factor

Canned B-11-22 (February?)

Appearance - Pours with a light haze and orange in color. Off-white, near two-finger width head that displays fair retention before breaking down to a thin, broken layer of suds with a thick ring around the outer edge.

Smell - Prominent pine aroma. Light citrus. Slightly cardboard undertone.

Taste - Green pine upfront and throughout, with a hint of lime coming through mid-taste and sneaks into the finish. Malts exhibit a lightly toasted breadiness and a trace of cardboard. Finish is a blend of pine and pith.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with fair carbonation. Smooth, easy drinker with a slightly dry finish.

Overall - This could have been fresher, but an IPA should still hold well at or around the 3 month mark. Their Flagship Hazy IPA is only two or so weeks fresher but tastes much better. Regardless, the dominant pine character isn't my favorite, but all-in-all not terrible, just not my cup o' tea.

Pours a cloudy, golden amber coloration with a large, fluffy head. Smells of biscuity, slightly caramelly malt and resinous, citrus hops, with notes of grapefruit, tangerine and pine. Taste is a great balance of biscuity, slightly caramelly malt and bitter, resinous, herbal, slightly dank and floral hops, with citrus notes of grapefruit and tangerine, as well as some pine and herbal weed. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some grapefruit and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

I can always appreciate an old school IPA and this West Coast example of the style certainly hits the spot with its bitter and resinous character, featuring a very pleasant bitterness. Additional citrus notes and herbal, dank accents balance this out nicely and while I could have done without the Amarillo hops personally, the Simcoe and Chinook, two of my favorite hops, certainly come through here in all of their glory. Overall, this makes for a quite enjoyable, bitter and resinous WCIPA that's rather crushable, with a nice body and mouthfeel as well.

This beer is probably the best IPA that Steamworks makes. Its piney and smooth, just the way I like em. The only downside is it doesn't have any pizzazz to set it apart from the ton of other IPAs with the same flavor profile. Its still good, so if you have a chance to drink it go for it.

473ml can (@ 6.8% ABV) - I guess that they're still kickin' it old-school, at least iPA-wise, with this offering.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, pale golden yellow colour, with three chubby fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly eggshell white head, which leaves some streaky and chunky lace around the glass as it rather lazily subsides.

It smells of gritty and grainy cereal malt, some orange, red grapefruit, and lemon citrus rind, a stoney flintiness, and more leafy, weedy, and piney green hop bitters. The taste is bready and crackery caramel malt, mixed domestic citrus and further indistinct tropical fruity notes, a damp minerality, and more earthy, herbal, and resinous piney hoppiness.

The carbonation is average in its palate-placating frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and generally smooth, with nothing really a cause for concern at this particular point in the process. It finishes trending dry, the hops showing some lingering chutzpah.

Overall - yep, this comes across very much like the first IPAs I enjoyed when I discovered the style, and especially ones that were actually made in the PAC-NW. Crisp, hoppy, balanced, and with no sign of the extra 2-ish points of the ol' wowee sauce, she's quite a pleasant quaff.

At the Gaztown brewpub. Like a cask brew, with understated carbonation. Hoppy with lace. Creamy mouthfeel that's middling and dangerous. A bit of grapefruit colour. High IBU and different and better than the Empress IPA, there's residual malt, and surely drinkable.

This is Steamwork's seasonal IPA. A well hopped, American style IPA. Aroma of citrus/grapefruit, pine and fruit. Each sip gives hints of lychee, with the bitterness coming through at the end. Not crazily hopped like Californian IPAs, but very well balanced. Great tasting beer IMO. Best Canadian brewed IPA imo.

Steamworks has great seasonals but some of their regular beers lack including their regular IPA. Well this hopped up version is hugely better than the regular version. Grapefruit hoppy nose, lots of hops in the body and a real nice balance that comes out in the finish. Tastes a lot like Phillips IPA in its fresh hop profile. It would be great if this replaced the regular IPA.
