Oh boy. Smells like alcohol.

I'm sitting here sharing a 9.5% alcohol beer with my roommate, listening to him talk about his job while reviewing this beer. Fear not, Golden Monkey, I will give you a fair shake.

You, Golden Monkey, are golden looking.

My roommate says it tastes like "shimmy" (Chimay).

It's definitely a Belgian style, but there's not that estery thing they speak of... No citrus, no spunk. The yeast is ok, but the thrill is gone from this spiced tripel that just smells and tastes like alcohol. Maybe something on a tree too, bananas? Monkeys? But bottom line it's not good.

Starts sweet, moves to malty, ends with alcohol, it's like a weak and bad shot.

It does fill the mouth though, and it's easy on the eyes, but I am not impressed. Golden Monkey, I'm talking to you.

330ml, bottled on Jan 03

Pours with a pale yellow body, slightly cloudy, decent inch head forms, fairly good retention and lacing

Aroma is spicy. Quite aromatic, almonds coming through, similar to duvel only slightly chemically

Taste, smooth, heavy and creamy. Spice and nuts, almonds especially, the alcohol is disguised pretty well, although there is a nice warming aftertaste

A good effort

12-oz bottle poured into a 22-oz snifter.

A = Pale greenish yellow, like a green tea. Frothy head that dissipates leaving little to no lacing.

S = Cinnamon, phenolic smells, roasted grains and honey notes in the background.

T = Nice smooth malty taste with the strong bitter yeast you expect in a tripel. Alcohol is well hidden considering the high ABV.

M = Coats the mouth well, light to medium body, pleasant carbonation.

D = Quite drinkable. Given the ABV, probably only good for one at a sitting, but it goes down easily and enjoyably.

A cloudy golden-orange color with a fizzy head that leaves quickly. There is a spicy aroma and a hint of floral hops. The taste has a very spicy bite that almost numbs your tongue. The alcohol is well masked and the floral hops are a nice was to finish off the taste. Very strong character in this brew. Good drinkability and aftertaste. The percentage definitely sneaks up on you. I only wish it was a better looking beer.

Appearance - hazy golden color with white head

smell - ginger, clove, coriander

taste - much like the aroma - ginger, clove, coriander, white grape, lemon peel

mouthfeel - medium bodied, high carbonation, a bit of astringency on the finish

Overall - decent American version of the style. worth a shot

Price Point - $2.29 - 12 oz single

This one poured a champagne gold with a modest head that retreated quickly with low to modest lacing. The smell is yeasty, spicy and has fruit overtones of banana and lemon. Very nice. The taste follows suit, though as it warmed there was a little bit of a metalic bitterness, otherwise pleasant. The mouthfeel is a highlight, creamy with a spicy tingle that draws you to the next sip. For a 9.0 ABV brew this one did not show it's hand until I had finished the glass (happily). Victory has crafted a fine tripel that hits on most of the style points to make this one a winner.

Poured from 1 pt 9. 4 fl oz bottle into a goblet.

A - Cloudy orange with pale yellow highlights. Half finger head that dissipates fairly quickly.

S - Yeasty cloves and mild banana. Green grapes.

T - Bread, yeast, banana, and grape notes. Strangely not as much as alcohol presence. Mild tartness at the finish.

M - Mildly sharp but still a touch creamy. Solid.

O - An interesting brew. Tripels have a way of sneaking up on you due the propensity to swill it down swiftly. This is worth trying, even if it seems to be missing something to put it over the top.

This is my first venture into the 'Tripel' style.

A: It is a bright golden color, a tad cloudy. Not much of a head and what was there disappeared quickly.

S: Vague hints of banana, lemons, orange and spices.

T: A good mixture of bananas and citrus. Also has a spicy taste. Some hints of honey and wheat as well.

M: It leaves a spicy and sweet aftertaste on the palate. A little too much alcohol flavoring though.

D: Such a high ABV, makes it a non-session beer. Overall, I enjoy the spicy wheat flavoring, but the taste of alochol was too apparent.

Golden moderately carbonated brew with a solid white head that stays well and leaves a nice lace.
Very hoppy scent, some good spice and caramel, earthly as well.
Taste is unbelievable! hoppy and sweet at the same time in perfect harmony, aftertaste is next to nonexistant which makes you reach for the beer constantly, this is a highly alcoholic beer but you wouldn't know from the taste. Some light grain quality to the flavor is present but subtle.
Full and solid body, doesn't leave much of an impression in the way of being slick yet feels smooth and mellow.
Very drinkable, this beer drinks itself.
Absolutely amazing!@#

Golden Monkey brewed by Victory Brewing Company, with an ABV of 9.50% This brew pours out a nice golden amber color, with a small whit head. The smell of Golden Monkey, has a rich sweetness of grains and malts. There is also a hit of fruits and spices in the smell of this brew. Now for the taste it is , bold with flavors. You pick up on a nice spicy, sweetness in this brew. Along with grins and malts. There is a lot going on in this brew. I can say this, Golden Monkey is a different kinda brew. There is a nice sweetness with some spice. There is nothing overpowering about this brew, it has a nice balance to it. I like how this brew is different from most brews on the market. The mouthfeel of Golden Monkey is, sweet, bold, spicy, and smooth. This is a smooth clean drinking brew. You really can't pick up on the 9.50% ABV in this brew. For being a brew with such a high ABV this brew goes down smooth. Overall I'm giving Golden Monkey a 4.25 out 5. I would buy this brew again. Victory Brewing Company, did a real nice job with this brew.
