In celebration of a really amazing night... I had to crack open a moonglow!

Poured into TH Weizen Glass

Pours about 2 fingers of light creamy tan head. Nice retention once head fades to a thin layer. Leaves some thick lace. Color is a bright caramel brown. Sediment in the glass as well.

Aroma: Banana, cloves, caramel malts, chocolate notes. A very sweet smelling beer. I like it.

Taste: Taste seems to be a little strong for a weizenbock. I am not an expert on these, but it is quite boozy. It has all the components of the smell, but it adds some alcohol which I really wasn't expecting from this beer. Still, pretty good.

Mouthfeel: A little boozy, but very smooth and silky. A nice creamy feel to it. Medium body with a decent amount of carbonation. Ends with a dry chocolate clove flavored aftertaste.

Overall, this is a pretty nice representation of the style. I really enjoy this style and glad to see that an American brewery can make one that is pretty good. For how high the abv is, this one is pretty drinkable. I'd easily have it again.

On tap at Rustico. Served in a pilsner glass.

Pours a light reddish brown with quite a bit of haze. Light white head and not much lacing. Great color. Nose brings forward some clove and a bit of spice. Tastes mildly sweet with some spice and zest. Feel is creamy and fairly full. Light carbonation. Drinks well.

A - The beer pours with half a finger of off-white foam on top of a slightly hazy, amber-brown body. The had settles rapidly and leaves light lace.

S - Intense dark fruit notes with lots of spicy yeast. Banana, plum, cinnamon, black cherry, and smoky cloves.

T - Smooth, lightly fruity malt up front with lots of caramel. The yeasty fruit intensifies in the middle with some banana, and clove as well as a hint of vanilla and some toffee. The toffee notes intensify as the beer finishes with more vanilla and clove as well as rising smoke character that mixes well with the rich malt profile.

M - Medium-thick body, moderate carbonation, and a somewhat sweet finish.

D - This is a rich and intense beer. I have a bit of a hard time calling this drinkable, though it is complex and quite enjoyable. The malt is rich and substantial and it provides a solid base from which the yeast can branch out with a variety of flavors. There is a lot of spice and some dark fruit with clove, banana, vanilla, and light smoke being the most prominent. These yeast derivitives work very nicely with the toffee and caramel of the dark malt and create a complex, sweet beer that is as much a dessert as it is a beverage. Weizenbocks are not always my favorite beers as they can be really cloying when the yeast notes and sweet malt don't work well together, but in this case everything harmonizes quite well and I have a hard time imagining a better example of this style.

Aged 12 oz bottle served in a snifter.
Slow but full pour left sediment on the side and bottom of the bottle, with a good bit of suspended sediment in the pour. The body was orange-brown, hazy with a modest and mostly short-lived, bone-colored head. Fruity aroma with a hint of biscuits.
Flavorful, with plenty of dark fruits and caramel plus hints of molasses, brown sugar, and spices.
Higher ABV evident, in a mostly attractive fashion, in both the aroma and the flavor.
Feel: smooth; warm; low carbonation; medium+ body.

I had this on tap once while living up in the Philly area and am glad I got the chance to try this out of the bottle,poured into my Aventinus glass a slightly hazy deep orange with a thin white head that is gone quite quickly.Aromas of tart green apple and smoke with a light cloviness but not to strong,not to sure about the mouthfeel up front a little prickly but it got better as I drank more.Very flavorful and big,smoky to the hilt with some expected banana and vanilla.Seems much bigger out of the bottle wich is fine,the beer held up well considering the "best before" date was April 04 05.

Cloudy. Deep orange with a brownish cast, topped by a frothy deep tan head that drops but holds well. The aroma is fruity, lightly tangy, and sweet with some banana, vanilla and spice (which includes clove, but is not necessarily limited to it). The body is medium with a very fine and gently effervescent carbonation. The flavor is quite rich, starting with a very creamy and lightly caramel maltiness, turning fruity, yeasty and lightly tangy with apple notes, then revealing some banana and vanilla before it finishes with a lingering spiciness. The alcohol is fairly well hidden within the flavor, but it's strong enough that you feel it before the glass is through. 8.7%... whew! Surprisingly complex. An interesting and enjoyable beer. Well brewed. This is a fall seasonal packaged with Halloween in mind, and I can't think of a better, or more appropriate time to enjoy this. The perfect "warming" beer for sitting on the back porch on a crisp evening with the smell of damp leaves and wood smoke wafting through the air.

I've been craving a wezienbock lately, so this should be nice of a cold night. Not date on the bottle unfortunately, but picked this up recently.

Pours a huge over carbonated like fluffy fizzy 3 finger head that takes up half the glass, fades slowly and turns fluffy and pillowy with nice lacing, and a stream of bubbles rising in the hazy but mostly clear candy apple reddish slight orange colored beer.

Nose is mostly what I expected, some biscuit and toffee, caramel and brown sugar candied darker fruits, a little raisin like, lots of wheat, toasted darker brown like wheat, little fig paste, etc, but it has that under-attenuated before bottling like aroma that was taken over by yeast and it's gotten a bit yeasty and some phenolic alcohol bite, bit boozy in the aroma.

Taste brings more of the same, toasted brown wheat malts, a little orange zest in there somehow, with more candied fruits, fig paste, date, candied raisin, etc, with more sweet flavors, brown sugar, caramel, toffee, etc again, and pretty sweet but not overly. A mild toasted biscuit as well, with some chewy almost molasses like notes, and again that yeasty flavor from under attenuated then over bottle conditioned yeast, but at least it didn't erupt in the bottle surprisingly. Booze is fairly prevalent, a little fusel alcohol with a mild phenolic tone. Finish is drier surprisingly, more booze lingering, some candied dried darker fruits, darker wheat and biscuit, and candy but not sticky.

Mouth is med to fuller bod, little sticky syrupy, way too much carbonation.

Overall not bad, but just left too sweet in the bottle and yeast just took over, shouldn't be that old either, but at least it's not too sweet. Some candy was nice, darker dried candied fruits were nice, and the wheat was nice, just not the yeast and alcohol was a bit much. It was a nice sipper for a cold almost winter night but bit more than I expected. The somewhat dry finish was also a nice surprise, not as sticky sweet as I was expecting.

On-tap 11/19/2010 at Doherty's East Ave Irish Pub in Pawtucket, RI, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a murky light brown color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains wheat, bananas, caramel, bready malts, some citrus and some spice.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel and bananas. Then bready flavors of wheat and a hearty malt character follow. There's a mild but complementary hops presence that brings a good balance. There's also a touch of an alcohol sting. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium-to-high carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, slightly filling, strong kick, very good representation of style, this is a decent beer to drink for a long time if you're in the mood for the style.

Served on-tap at Texas Arizona in Hoboken, NJ

A: Pours a hazy to cloudy dark amber in color with some very light amounts of visible carbonation and some reddish brown highlights. The beer has a finger thick creamy beige head that slowly reduces to a thick film covering the majority of the surface of the beer with a slightly thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of sweet toffee malts with some lighter hints of banana and clove. There is also a light amount of yeast presence.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of malts with some toffee and dark fruit sweetness. This is over the top of some spiciness - clove and banana - as well as some yeastiness. Light amounts of lingering bitterness in the finish.

M: Medium to full bodied with light amounts of carbonation. Smooth.

O: Fairly easy to drink considering the ABV - which is well hidden in this brew. There is a nice complexity and balance to the flavor making this one quite enjoyable.

Strong, strange perfumey smell and flavor is the first encounter. Big German esters and a Hefeweizen taste topped off by a dollop of hops. Quite spicy, but also grainy and cereal tastes. Some of the bitterness tastes like it's from some process other than hops.

No date on this bottle. Yeasty chunks in the bottom of the glass. I wonder if it's been around a while. I'm sure I've liked this better a year or two ago.

Got a growler full of this stuff about a week ago. Quite delicious. My first thought was "saison" but after a few more sips, I was enthralled that a weizenbock had such a strong and wide variety of flavors.

Quite tasty, if you get a chance to drink it, do so.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Dogfish shaped pint glass. It poured brown with a bit of an orange hue to it. The head started off big and full, filling the top two inches of the glass. The head retreated to the sides of the glass, but left some great lacing.

The aroma is sweet with wheat malt leading the way. A moderate banana and clove like spiciness flavor comes through in it as well. Very flavorful and appealing aroma to it overall. I really like how much the wheat comes through.

The taste leans a bit more on the fruity and spicy flavors coming through from the yeast. That sweet wheat malt comes through nicely and lends a sweetness right through the finish. It mixes the flavors very nicely though and neither overpowers the beer. Very flavorful beer overall.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with carbonation being a bit below average. Drinkability is good, I really liked the wheat malt flavors to it. All the flavors worked together very nicely and make for a very nice beer overall. I really love this style when it's done well.

16 ounce pint - $6.50 at Taco Mac in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Descends from the top-level tap a mid-range mahogany-hued body topped with a finger of off-white foam.

Smell: Tangy, spiced bouquet of bready dark malted wheat and supporting clove and peeled banana notes, as well as sweet-scented hints of caramel and golden syrup.

Taste: Ah, the tanginess of German wheat malt with a taste of toasted bread smothered in gooey, sweet caramel sauce. Mingled amidst the malty tastes are some spicy phenols providing a mild, easy-going cracked clove flavor. Also, some fruity touches of raisins and bananas to be found in there. Hint of sourish yeast. Lightly spicy, herbal hop character with a mild, restrained level of bitterness. Finishes tangy and malty and pretty crisp, I must say.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-high carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.

Drinkability: An agreeable Fall seasonal that isn't just another Pumpkin Ale or Oktoberfest. Although the alcohol isn't overly evident in the taste, it sure did sneak up on me later, providing me with quite a glow of my own.

Pours a slightlty hazy amber/tea coior with a 3 fingers deep sand colored head. minimal lacing & zerohead retention. Really the only weakpoint for this outstanding beer

S: Bubblegum & choclate & hints of bandaids

T: Fruittyness, chocolate & bubblegum up front. Warming alcohol pepper & hints of brown sugar follow. Finishes bready, quenching, juicy & spicy (pepper & cinamon)& warming. Taste the weizen gives way to the bock as it warms

MF: Medim/heavy bodied with low carbonation & nicely balanced

Drinks very easy for the abv, a really nice weizen bock. I could session on this no problem

Large 2/3 of the glass head. Dissipates to a rocky foam. Surprisingly little lace. The color is a dark amber, like maple syrup. Predictably cloudy, but with lots of yeasty beasties.

Sweet, sugary caramel aroma. The wheat is present but in the background.

The flavor is much like the aroma--sweet, but not coy. Light wheat. The body appears thick with the below average level of carbonation. The power of the swallow dies quickly in the aftertaste. Warm alcohol presence as well.

Soft-focus reddish orange with copper highlights and an impressive amount of carbonation that had nearly exhausted itself when I next took a look. The pastel orange cap is large and pillowy soft with a whipped creamy texture. Unfortunately, it's too soft to stick to the glass. Moonglow looks like pumpkin pie in a glass (complete with the topping); appropriate given the fact that this is Thanksgiving day.

Although the nose is enjoyable, it isn't powerful enough or complex enough to be considered truly great. The stars of the show are fruit and spice. More precisely, overripe apples chunks dusted with ground clove. The beer smells like it'll be both sweet and sour. I had to go looking to appreciate even the slightest hint of alcohol in the nose.

This is exceptional beer. I had a sense of the flavor profile after assessing the nose, but hoped that it would be more fleshed out and vibrant. Thankfully, it is. There's a wonderfully bready, dark wheaty lushness that contains elements of cocoa and toasted pecans. Next is stickysweet baked apples, as if plucked fresh from a pie. The top layer is pungently spicy clove provided by a yeast strain that Victory would do well to hang onto.

How on earth could I forget the bananas? The monkey fruit gets up close and personal with the taste buds and is an estery, sweet, tropical delight. I'm happy to report that Moonglow scores a 4.0/5.0 on my (hefe) weizen banan-o-meter. There's a near perfect commingling of sweet, sour and bitter that makes the flavor endlessly fascinating and enduringly enjoyable.

No worries about the mouthfeel. It's in that netherworld between medium and full, edging toward the latter as it warms. It's lush and slick without being heavy, and practically oozes quality. Admittedly, the carbonation was too boisterous initially, although patience has been rewarded with a gradual softening. The final 2/3 of the bottle has been perfect.

Moonglow Weizenbock is the best weizenbock that I've ever had and is one of the best beers from one of my favorite breweries (and is the single best non-hoppy one). It did more than meet my expectations, it exceeded them by a mile. I'd like to thank BeerBeing for sending me a classic fall seasonal that I'd gladly buy by the case if I was blessed with easy access.

12 oz brown long neck with an “Enjoy By” freshness date on the label, nice blurb about the beer and it also states that this is a bottle conditioned brew.

Appearance: For this sample I swirled the yeast in to the glass for the full effect, an true wheat beer drinker would agree. Reddish brown bordering on burgundy, obvious cloudiness from the yeast …even before the yeast was poured in there was an evident haze. The head lays there two fingers deep waiting of the first sip.

Smell: Ripe bananas, medicinal root of some kind and light estery and fusel alcohols hit the nose. Malty sweet as well with a touch of caramel.

Taste & Mouthfeel: So creamy smooth in the mouth … unbelievable. Solid flavourful fermented wheat twang upfront, layers of sweet and toasted malt hit next. Bitter medicinal phenols grab the palates attention and help to balance. The alcohol prickles the tongue and warms the body with its soothing esters. Very fruity with a flexed tropical base and banana in the forefront. Slight bitter herb and malt sweetness in the finish.

Notes: There are few Weizen Bocks around, none the less Victory is right on target with this one. Why I bought a single to sample … I am going back for a case.

I cracked this one open with dinner tonight, suprised as I had never had one before. Served chilled nad poured into a pint glass, this one was consumed on 03/29/2009.

The pour was more then decent. Rich caramel in color with a nice hazy and cloudy look to it. Really tight head of off white lacing came only to about a quarter of an inch before falling down into a thin lacing around the sides. Rich toffee and sweet malts were dominating the aroma here. Nice touches of roasted nuts and a dark fruit as it warmed up. Smooth, subtle and with the alcohol well masked I went in for my first sip. Nice well rounded, and very well balanced profile here. Easy to drink as the warming and sweet malts played over the tongue. Rich notes of caramel and toffee are all over this one as it settles down nicely into a firm and soft finish that leaves a slightly drying and light flavor across the mouth.

Overall a very satisfying beer. Solid as could be and perfect for a nice spring afternoon. Good offering here from Victory.
