so I've heard of this beer around the site and being at the brewery I thought I'd give it a whirl. it is what is says it is, lager crispness with a solid dosing of corn sweetness and a mild underlaying malt and hint of hops.

glad to have tried it, not sure I'd recommend it based on their amazing selection but glad to have tried it.

Tasted side-by-side with Pabst Blue Ribbon at the South Philadelphia Tap Room.
Victory $4.00 PBR $2.25

Both the PBR and Throwback have a similar appearance. Crystal clear, straw gold in color, and topped by a full and foamy bright white head that holds fairly well before dropping to a standard collar. The carbonation is fine, leaving thin steady streams of tiny bubbles rising steadily to the surface. In general... a nice appearance.

The aroma is quite limited on both (as it should be for the style) with just vaugue indications of malt, hops, and fermentation esters.

The body is light with a gentle carbonation and a smooth, slightly creamy mouthfeel.

The flavor is a basic, one-sided, adjunct-enhanced maltiness. The bartender remarked to me that he likes it "because it's sweet", and it is. In fact, the PBR was crisper and more bitter. It's very clean, and there were hardly any fermentation characteristics to be noted other than the standard, underlying-suplhur "lager" character and a suggestion of fruitiness that should be there.

The finish is "short and sweet" with only a residual malt and next to non-existant bitterness.

It's refreshing! And there's a reason that this is the best selling style of beer in the world. However, I was expecting a pre-prohibition lager for some reason, not and American adjunct lager. A pre-pro would have been more bitter and hoppy. Still, it's a decent enough beer that I'd gladly enjoy in place of PBR, Miller High Life, or even Bud. Except that it costs more. For $4 I'll take the Hop Devil!!!

Stopped in at Capone’s in Norristown today (ran into LeftMindedRighty) and they had Throwback Lager on in honor of "Victory over Prohibition Day." I decided to give it a whirl.

In the company American Macro Lagers this beer stands out from BMC with more clear grain malt flavor, sweet and easy, but it is an adjunct lager plain and simple.

Appearance: Served a clear pale yellow with a white head.

Smell: The aroma is predictably small, but with some effort I could detect some malt and some bitterness.

Taste: Sweet malt to start with a bitter hops corn husks and bitterness. The bitter and corn-chip dry taste leave a somewhat spicy citrus sitting on the tongue and an annoying aftertaste that had to be washed down with another sip. The flavor apropos to style as is the macro-like aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Crisp and dry with a fizzy light body.

Drinkability: This beer is light and easy and goes down quick. If Victory was trying to compete with the Macro market this easy drinker would do fine for drinking a 6-pack if adjunct lager is your thing. However since the beer is not bottled, anyplace that would have it on tap ie Capone’s has better beer to follow this up with. Either buy a keg for your kegorator (I think their available) or one pint at the bar and move on to something more interesting.

Hope this is helpful.

I had this on tap at Capone's the other night and it was limited.

Clear golden body with a small white head that fell to a ring.Lots of streaming bubbles.Very lively looking beer.

"fresh" lager smell with some faint hop presence.

Faint floral hop taste with malt tied in nicely.

Carbonation is easy and present, very good and a smooth mouthful.

Awesome! Well done .Im proud to have helped end prohibtion.Awesome Victory! While this beer really isnt anything new in the lager family,it is indeed a very nice and enjoyable lager to session.I had two of them.Would have again If I saw it on tap.

Poured some of my growler into a Victory shaker glass (I felt that this was most appropriate!).

A: Pours a golden yet straw colored body with a thick, frothy head with nice retention and excellent lacing along the sides of the glass.

S: A sweet, malty smell with honey undertones that seemed quite complimentary.

T: A light, crisp and refreshing malty taste with some sweet, honey taste evident in the aftertaste.

M: A light, crisp and refreshing beer. An excellent lager and summer beer.

D: An excellent combination of mouthfeel and taste makes this an excellent beer. A very drinkable beer that had me refilling my glass. An excellent brew and highly recommended.

Reviewed on 7/10/08. On tap at Blind Tiger. Pours golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma is light and crisp with some light fruits. Flavor of corn sweetness. Light, crisp, refreshing. There's not much going on here, but this is a decent pale lager and quite drinkable and refreshing.

Pale yellow with a voluminous white head that quickly fades to a ring around the outside of the glass. Lacing is not so great, even in a bar cleaned glass. The aroma is.... Well to be totally honest I am not picking up on much more what I was accustomed to in the days that I would slam PBR, Miller light or whatever was on special at the bar. A slight maltyness with some yeast and perhaps even a rumor of hops, though that might just be my imagination. The taste is more interesting in that I actually found it to be a bit sweeter than most adjunct lagers. Bready malt and yeast with just a touch of smooth herbal hops and not a whole lot of bitterness. Goes down easy but not very exciting. The mouthfeel is light and the finish is surprisingly crisp given the low bitterness. Very drinkable, but paying craft prices for a macro style product does not make any sense to me. Just go for a Prima or Vic Lager instead. For me, this is pretty much just a gimmick beer.

on tap at the Victory catering truck - served in plastic cup

Brilliant golden color, crystal clear in the sunlight and topped with a thin layering of white head. Fades away into a wisp of film with little lacing.

Malty and doughy in the nose with hints of lemon peel and corn. Yup, its an adjunct - but without the steely, offensive scents the more popular varieties tend to exhibit.

Easy drinking with a mild corny backbone. Doughy with honey and a little fresh cut grass. Quaffable, especially on a 80+ degree day outside.

Lighter body, decent carbonation, cool and refreshing on the tongue with minimal dryness. Apparently this was a post-prohibition inspired lager they made with corn flakes, so the results were pretty pleasing. This certainly isn't their best lager brewed beer, but I thought they achieved the goal.
