DATE: December 10, 2017... OCCASION: Browns almost get their first win, but fall to 0-13--solace in this beer? GLASSWARE: Maudite snifter... pours a velvet-black body with a thick, frothy finger of oatmeal brown head... lacing is picturesque loops of coral... cocoa, gingerbread, sugary esters, plum, cupcake, lactic characteristics with little or no cherry of note... sips with a thick-as-molasses seep, creamy through the mouth and settling with a sweet warmth... more on the finish--a chocolaty pudding eases the throat, with the slightest pitch of cherry cola, sharp and full-bodied... thick roasted malts present a baked dessertif that leaves a sweet rum... an enjoyable, slow-sipping stout that accompanies this sub-30 degree night well and right... almost could require a knife and fork for its digestion...

Enjoy by 2/19/18. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours almost black with a nice fluffy khaki head that slowly falls leaving great thick retention and sticky lacing. The aromas are malt forward along with some hints of cocoa and almonds. The cherry aromas are pretty mild. The cherries come through in the flavor department. It's sweet and slightly tart. Subtle roasted characteristics. The chocolate comes through. It has some chocolate syrup going on. Solid malt backbone. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is very nice. It's medium-bodied with moderate to low carbonation. It's extremely fluffy. Very smooth and easy to drink.

This is a solid stout. The cherries are the star without dominating or being overwhelming. They deliver on what they advertised.

The beer pours out a black color, with 1 finger of super dence chocolate milk colored head------------------ the aromas are of dark roasted malts, dark fruits and cherry cough syrup------------------ the flavors are of cherry tartness, chocolate, earthy/minerality and chocolate teddy grahams, the beer has a thin mouthfeel with a roasted bitterness on the finish-------------- overall this beer was ok, I was hoping for something different, it was to thin and didn't taste like cake, it had a cherry cough syrup vibe with a toasty bitterness that threw me off

Victory Brewing Co. "Blackboard Series #7 - Black Forest Cake Stout with Cherry"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "ENJOY BY: 19 FEB 2018 2303 P"
$2.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Well I've been waiting for this, let's hope it lives up to my amped up expectations. It pours an opaque brown-black with just a thin edge of mahogany at the base of the glass. The head is a creamy, not quite finger-thick cap of very dark tan - even brown. It looks good. And it smells good too, there's lots of chocolate there. There's cherry as well, but it doesn't come across as cherry, just more like a fruitiness. I don't find roastiness, at least not in any solid amount. On to the flavor... wow! There's a tartness to it, and the cherry is clear. It's also nutty and chocolatey, and roasty and coffee-ish (mainly in the finish). Ahh, I even get a note of coconut every now and again. Interesting. The main components of cherry juice and roasty stout work together well but then also stand out on their own. It's 7.5% abv but I'm not finding any alcohol, not that I really expected to, but you've got to check for it. It's got a decent amount of bitterness to it and although it's fruity and lightly tart and then sweetish before becoming more malty it still finishes dry. What did the label say?... "bittersweet", exactly. You could call this a dessert beer, and it would certainly work, but I think you could drink this on it's own just as easily at any time of the year. Looking back it's left some impressive lacing although the head didn't hold up that well. Still, it's got a good appearance. Overall I'm impressed. It avoids all of the pitfalls that a beer like this might have including: too much dark malt acidity; too much hop flavor; too much or too little malt; less balance than it has in either sweetness, fruitiness, tartness, or roastiness; and overall and finish bitterness. It could have taken many directions but this one is right on.

I wasn't aware this was a variant of Storm King until I saw some of the reviews. I'm not at all fond of Storm King. This one is better.

I still wish Victory wouldn't "hop-ify" just about everything they brew. Personally, I don't think one should have to taste hops in a stout, and I have tasted quite a few that don't have the hops bite. This stout still does - but it doesn't have the nasty aftertaste that Storm King has. As such, it is pleasant enough and far more drinkable.

Aroma isn't bad. While I don't get cake, I do get some fruitiness. It's not off-putting. Drinking Storm King was a chore. This is not something I have to force down, at least. I do detect some chocolate, and the bitterness is present, but not overwhelming. Has a somewhat creamy feel to it - not bad.

Overall, this is decent. I can drink a couple of these without grimacing and chiding myself for having bought more than one. That's not great praise, but it ain't bad either.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is a pitch black color with a large brown head. The aroma is malt bliss. The taste is malt and sweet cherries.

From the 12 oz bottle in a snifter. This odd brew pours a solid, nice opaque with a nice head
of light tan foam that settles to a thick ring, clumping layer, and showcases nice sticky lacing.
Nose of light cherry and dark roasted malts with light coffee and chocolate notes. Flavors
dismiss the nose with a tart cherry forward brew that asserts itself more like a cherry cake
that is drenched in bitter coffee with dark bakers chocolate riddled with char notes and a
touch of cream that makes me wonder if there is lactose in this one. Decent mouth feel;
low carbonation, full body, and a lightly sweet yet excessively tart cherry finish.

Had this been marketed as a bitter chocolate cherry stout it would of rang true,
but there is too much cherry and not enough cake.

Really like this brewery, but this one misses the mark.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of roasted malts, chocolate, light coffee. Taste is roasted malts, coffee, hints of cherries. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer, although it fails to deliver much on the cherries, and not at all on the cake.
