Victory Brewing Co. "Juice Boost"
One Pint can, "ENJOY BY: 16 MAY 2019 125015 P FL"
$1.83 @ Wegmans, King of Prussia, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Firstly, I can't believe they got federal approval for the name as "Boost" seems like something they would have shot down before. They shot down Dogfish Head for having the words "vim & vigor" on their label. Whatever, it's poured a hazy straw gold beneath a short fluffy white head that falls back into itself. It's a hoppy aroma with hop resins, some "dankness", lemon, and a hint of peach. The label lists Citra and I can believe that although it seems there are other hops in there as well. Oh, and I should point out that it does contain lactose. OK, the flavor is tart but not that tart, also also quite sweet, a little bit more like and energy drink or malternative than a beer. It's not that bitter at all but at least the hop flavor is there. The lactose adds to the feel and it's medium bodied and delicately crisp. The alcohol never shows but I'm glad it's at 7.2% otherwise I might not feel that I got a lot out of this. Maybe it's helping to balance it a bit but in the end I find it overall to be to sweet.

I'm really confused by this beer. I expected a nice tart beer well accented and complimented by citra dry hopping. In reality it's not tart or sour at all. It's certainly hoppy but it's ruined by the strange addition of lactose. The lactose creates a chalky sweetness that has no place in a beer that's supposed to be sour. I also can't see why they have this at such a high ABV. I'm disappointed. nb

There's never no season where a sour ale isn't welcomed in the glass. Streaming onto the tastebuds like grapefruit juice, Victory's Citra dry hopped kettle sour ale updates the traditional sour beer with the irresistible hop notes of citronella.

Hazy like wheat beer, Juice Boost pours creamy, soft and with a matte straw finish. Its sent focuses on tangy citrus, cider, white wine and a soft bready scent. Sweet and bready on the early palate, a taste of sourdough with taffy makes a first impression on the tongue.

Sweetness soon evaporates on the middle palate and the hop aromas turn to a tangy, bitter and succinct taste of pink grapefruit juice. Supported well with secondary flavors of oranges, lemon, apple and lime, the beer transports the tastebuds to the tropics in the dead of winter. Trending bitter and sour, both in moderate tone, a finish of mild cider and wine is remiss of sangria and screwdriver cocktails.

Simple, uncomplicated and drinkably dry, the medium bodied sour ale takes a light creamy texture across the brisk acidity and balancing bitterness and into a medium length aftertaste of sourdough and cereal.

(16 oz can, enjoy by 16 May 2019... poured into a fat tulip)

L: mostly-clear pale yellow liquid with slight haze; loose, white foam builds on pour, collapsing into messy, bubbly collar... scant splotches of lace

S: pineapple, fleshy-juicy orange rind, floral spice; bit of a musty funk in the background... mostly getting hops on the nose; the 'wild' character creeps in gradually, eventually settling in a mellow balance with the hops, lending a dried tropical fruit tone

T: way more juicy hop resins and base malt than expected; big hit of a blend of mango/pineapple, leaning heavily on the former... aftertaste is somewhat dry, with a light funk lingering, along with heavy tones of grapefruit, mango, and a touch of lightly-bitter fresh-cut grass... seems like there's a nice balance between the tart and funky elements, but neither are bracingly bold... has a malty pina colada thing going

F: light foamy touch to its nectary, silky viscosity... there's a soft sizzle in the finish, but it doesn't diminish the initial milky attack of its body; finishes softly clipped, with the hop bitter and booze leaving a soft heat and refreshing hum at the front of the palate

O: I was not expecting this degree of brightness and intensity in flavors... lovely drink, but it's more of a 'sour' APA or IPA than a 'traditional' wild/sour ale

Golden yellow in color with a finger of fizzy white head. Aroma is big on pineapple with an orange juice back. Taste is semi-sour but the overripe fruits and citrus kind of flatten it out a bit. Citrus is almost overripe and the mouthfeel is a bit too sweet and cloying. Finish is of ripe oranges yet also a bit refreshing like fresh squeezed juice, too. Just wish the souriness had been a bit more dominant

Clear bright gold with lots of bubbles, a foamy white head, good retention, and streaks of lacing.
Smells like lemon yogurt, lemon juice, orange zest, sugar cookie, vanilla.
Tastes of lemon yogurt, lemon candy, lemon zest, pineapple, coconut water, vanilla, and sugar cookie. Leans more sweet than sour with yogurt-like lactose creaminess and a touch of lemony sourness. Finishes fairly clean and lightly dry.
Feels medium-bodied, well carbonated, slightly creamy in particular with the lactose addition.
An okay sour ale from Victory. The tartness and Citra dry-hopping are nice, but it's too sweet for a sour ale. The addition of lactose is completely unneeded here.

L: Poured into a tulip with a good 1 1/2- 2 finger rocky white head. Pale hazy and glowing gold. Very nice to look at.

S: Sweet. Grapefruit, lime, and a bit of pine. Maybe a little bit of orange peel. The citra hops really come through. Refreshing and crisp are the most accurate words that come to my mind.

T: Follows the nose at first. Sweet at the start, followed by the tiniest bit of malt character. Then it gives way to the hops with pronounced grapefruit, lime, and even a bit of salty pineapple. The finish is very pleasant, tart and mildly acidic. Very balanced. Hops linger in the aftertaste in a very enjoyable and welcome way.

F: Carbonation is fairly light and crisp. Medium body which coats the mouth decently. Moderately dry.

O: An incredibly easy to drink beer. Incredibly balanced and dangerously easy to take in. I'm a little disappointed that the ABV is on the higher end because I'd like to be able to drink a few more of them without going too far. Goes well with many different foods (tried it with seafood, Korean, Mexican, and BBQ). I'm drinking this in January and all I can think about is summer. I think that sums it up pretty nicely.
