Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.70%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
It’s arguable that our menacingly delicious HopDevil has always been wild. With bold German malts and whole flower American hops, this India Pale Ale is anything but prim. But add a touch of brettanomyces, the unruly beast responsible for the sharp tang and deep funk found in many Belgian ales, and our WildDevil emerges completely untamed. Floral, aromatic hops still leap from this amber ale, as a host of new fermentation flavor kicks up notes of citrus and pine. Pour yourself a glass today—if you dare.

A: Pours a crystal clear medium copper-ish amber in color with light to moderate amounts of active visible carbonation slowly rising from the bottom of the glass and some faint golden yellow highlights. The beer has a three finger tall foamy light beige head that slowly reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer with a small slightly thicker patch and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of brett funkiness with decent amounts of barnyard and hay which is followed by lighter aromas of citrus/lemon zest and pine/resin hops. Just a hint of biscuit malts.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate amount of biscuit + cracker malts with a slightly heavier than moderate amount of brett funky flavors (including some solid barnyard funk and hay). There is a moderate amount of citrus/lemon zest and pine/resin hops which intensify through the finish.

M: Medium bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Light to moderate amounts of dryness are present in the finish.

O: A very enjoyable beer with a nice combination of wild/brett flavors and the traditional hop flavors in the base beer - easy to drink and definitely one I would grab again.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 750 mL bottle into a Peg's snifter.

A: Pours a clear copper, average carbonation. Forms a big fluffy white head with good retention.

S: Musty Brett funk, light lemony citric tang, resinous hops and light bready malts.

T: Brett barnyard musk and a bit of dishwater character. Spice, melon, and citrus hops, but hop presence is lower than expected. Toasted bready malts and some horseblanket round things out. Dry with a light hop bitterness on the finish.

M: Medium body, carbonation sensation on the low side, and the alcohol is fairly well-hidden.

O: This beer seems to hit some right notes, but there are misses too. Primarily, it needs more hops and/or funk. I feel like in order to make it easier to drink, it sacrificed the good flavors it should have had - just seems a bit middle of the road.
