Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.70%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
It’s arguable that our menacingly delicious HopDevil has always been wild. With bold German malts and whole flower American hops, this India Pale Ale is anything but prim. But add a touch of brettanomyces, the unruly beast responsible for the sharp tang and deep funk found in many Belgian ales, and our WildDevil emerges completely untamed. Floral, aromatic hops still leap from this amber ale, as a host of new fermentation flavor kicks up notes of citrus and pine. Pour yourself a glass today—if you dare.

pours a hazy amber with a massive, nearly uncontrollable head. nose; brett-dominated with sour yeast smells & lime pith. taste; slightly soured bready belgian yeast funk core. it takes a few sips to discern the hop and mild fruit flavors beyond the core, but they're here meekly in the middle. it's hilarious that the "tastes like a band-aid" claim on bretts rings true here, which is off-putting for me. i like dank, but this beer is a dirty kind of "smelly clothes" dank. there's not an ipa fan on earth that would label this brew an ipa. a more apt category is "american wild ale" i'd think.

L: Pours a slightly hazed amber under a 3” faintly yellow tinted white foam collar that slowly recedes. S: Earthy fruit aromas rise form the glass joined by funky Brett. T: Layers of flavor with peach, tropical fruit, hop flavors, light malt, over ripe fruit, yeast flavors all interacting and vying for prominence with everything falling into a well-rounded balance by the finish. There is a little papaya in the after tastes. F: The texture is incredibly creamy and soft. The body is medium. O: An outstanding wild IPA.

Love the base beer, but I don't think it got enough Brett. Very mildly sour, with an insane amount of carbonation.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass.

L: Pours a deep copper, semi-opaque with thick creamy white head. Generous lacing.

S: Sour yeasts and citrus. Hops present but subdued. Does not smell like an IPA.

T/F: Hops forward, giving way to some mildly sour citrus and funk. Orange peel and lemon... a little herbal, and a mild sour aftertaste. Mouthfeel is smooth and carbonated. Almost creamy.

O: Not really sure what to make of this beer. Not really an IPA but it has noticeable hops... some sour funk but not nearly a sour, and lots of flavors are duking it out for attention... kind of like a child banging pots on the kitchen floor. Tastes better as it warms, but after half the bomber I'm still not convinced I like it. I don't hate it though, and it's definitely interesting.
