Though a winter seasonal, after smelling and tasting, I'd say it held up. Here's the rest:
This was poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a thick black color with a one finger off white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute leaving a messy lacing.
The smell started off with bitter pine to a light citrus rind. Dark roasted malts developed as it warmed.
The taste was extremely bitter in the beginning and loses its cool as the bitterness really takes over. Pine and citrus take a backseat.
The mouthfeel was sharp and bitter with the hops pounding my tongue into submission. It sat about a medium on the body with not much sessionability about it.
Overall, I say this was a pretty good black IPA that I'd have again.

Robust, resinous hop aroma with a slightly roasty, toffee laden malt note. Nicely balanced on the nose.

Slightly hazy red-brown colour with a small, creamy tan head.

Lush and full of creamy, caramelised malts that gives way to a moderately bitter, densely resinous ale. Very nice.

Medium body with moderate carbonation. Good.

A really solid ale and my type of dark, hoppy ale. Lots of flavour with great hop character.

after hearing good things about this beer im glad i found this floating around

Pours a deep amber, tons of head on this beer, id say it has too much head retention, smells crisp with some citrus flavors, and of course hops, tons of hops and citrus flavors with a bitter aftertaste

it is very drinkable for a 9ish% beer

Appearance - Very dark reddish brown but clear. As dark a clear beer as I've seen quite exceptional appearance!

Smell - Very strong hop scent. Very fresh fruitiness and citrus.

Taste - Hopheads unite! Extremely hoppy, maybe one of the hoppiest beers I've had, but it does have some spice and sweetness to slightly balance it. Its still overly hopped out of balance though. The high alcohol is well disquised though by the hops.

Mouthfeel - Actually is very pleasant mouthfeel. Creamy head and warm butter texture.

Overall - Its a very bold beer and extremely hoppy beer but it tends to smooth out as it warms. Definitely not sessionable, but its a nice 1 stop visit when your palet is in the mood for a strong hop bite.

Pours gorgeously - a dark clear amber with a nice frothy almost root beer-like head. The smell, although not very prominent is malty with a floral hint. The taste is hoppy - floral and citrusy alongside a toasted malt which is bready at times. There is a touch of grapefuit in there as well. It's at times similar to a hoppy barleywine. It's a medium-bodied brew, although with an 8.7% ABV - still I can put down several of these.

A: Really dark cooper color. It looked almost black at first but clearly some copper colors at the edges. The head has a dark tint to it, not the best retention, but whats left looks really sticky and has some good laceing
S: This beer smells great. Beautifal fresh pine with some citrus in the background. Has a sweet kinda fruity smell going on in there as well
T: The malt hits you up front. Nice roasted malt with some caramel flavor in there. For a moment I think its not as hoppy as it smells but then they hit me. The hops hit hard and they taste delicously dirty. They taste really earthy and almost kinda smokey or herby.
M: The mouthful is medium, with pretty good carbonation
D: The drinkability isn't that high. I do get a little taste of alcohal, about what you expext for almost 9%. The hops are beautifally harsh, but they limit the drinkability a little.

This pours very dark purple with medium tan head. There is moderate retention and decent lacing. The smell is pungent dark fruits and hops. The flavor is robust raison and citrus hops. I like this because the complexity relies on fruit rather than spice. I'm most impressed with the amount of detectable hops and bitterness in the taste, and the lack over over-sweet syrup qualities that sometimes come with ABVs over 8%. The body is heavy, but well balance, so 1-2 of these would be pretty painless.

Served on-tap at ChurchKey in Washington, D.C.(11/07/09) in a 16oz. nonic pint glass at a desired temperature.

A: Pours a deep, dark brown with a ruby hue and one finger of a frothy coffee colored head that left little lacing.

S: Contrary to the appearance this does smell indeed like a DIPA. A citrus and piney hop comes through along with a deep roasted malt character.

T: The roasted malt shines through on the palate along with a complex spicy citrus flavor combined with a piney hop. A pleasant smoke and coffee flavor come into play as well adding even more spice. Not nearly as hoppy as I expected, but certainly interesting.

M: A smooth medium-body beer with no real sense of the 8.9% abv.

D: Fairly drinkable as the flavors are quite interesting and blend well together, but I was not overly impressed.

Overall I find this beer to be certainly interesting, but nothing earth shattering. I enjoyed my 16oz. pour, but was ready to move on from there. Worth a look.

Pours ruby red with a very fluffy and sticky head...I poured a little aggressively and the head almost overflowed. Have to be careful with this one in the future.

Aroma is of citrus hops, pine, roasted malts

Taste is a big hit of the pine, citrus, hops with a good toasted malt coming in to balance it out

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, and with good levels of carbonation. Very drinkable, even if its a strong ale.

Poured a dark, yet clear, brown/mahogany color from a 12 oz bottle, with ABV and 'best-by' date clearly marked on the label.
One finger off-white to mocha colored head that dissipated fairly quickly.
Aroma is a see-saw between rich roasted malt notes and floral hop notes. Nothing too overwhelming, just pleasant aromas coming through.
The aroma definitely leads you into the taste. Upfront there is just a hint of hop bitterness which then gets usurped by the roasted malt. Towards the finish, the malt and hops battle to a truce with both flavors subsiding to a nice pleasant aftertaste. There is a very good balance between the hops and malts.
Not a lot of lacing around the insides of the glass.
Good drinkability and mouthfeel (although at times it feels slightly thin).
Overall this is a very good interpretation of a black ale. Definitely worth a try and comes recommended.
