Quite possibly my new favorite beer. It's basically a winter version of - to borrow a phrase from Sierra - an Extra IPA. Drinks like an IPA with a dark color and a winter warmer feel to it. I'm going out this week to buy a kegerator so I can have this at home all the time - the cases don't last a week and are getting expensive! I'm a big Hop Devil fan but this just adds a whole new dimension that gives it a leg up - at least until summer comes.

Reviewing bottle 4 from a 6-pack (but my first today)

Heard about this on the VBC twitter feed and watched a youtube of the brewmasters describing it.

A: Dark. Maple. clear with a solid head.

S: Strong citrus hops (pineapple & pine) to start followed by ample earthy malts (maple and chocolate) - very nice balance. Surprising considering the color.

T: Complex. Not as citrusy as expected, but definitely bitter. Malts follow with a strong chocolate presence. Haven't tasted much like this before. Akin to Stone Double Bastard, but fresher.

M: Surprisingly thin for the ABV and little stickiness considering the hops.

D: Way too easy to drink. Delicious and easy to have too many.

Overall: Very pleased with this new offering from VBC. Disappointed in price - $11.99 per sixer in NJ. Anxious to try it on tap at the brewpub or otherwise. Looking forward to sharing with fellow geeks over the holidays. Would love to see in 750ml bottles like the Monkey.

A - Came in a half-pint glass, on tap. Dark copper, red tint, small tan head

S - Strong, fruity hops on the nose, similar to IPAs, think Stone. But, not overpowering, because I still pick up malt sweetness.

T - Crisp, fresh clean taste, well balanced though for a strong beer. You get the hops at the beginning on the nose, and on the backend, but you definitely pick up a great deal of malt in between. The malt taste isn't "sweet," but has a biscuit flavor similar to Fat Tire.

M - dry, but not sweet. Very drinkable for ~9% beer.

Overall: Great beer, I would definitely go and try to find this in the bottle for home consumption. I'll be returning to the pub to try again. Would recommend trying. The bartenders said they loved this beer, and now I understand why. Great beer, try it.
