Victory's 3 part ode to deluxe hops features Storm King Stout, Hop Wallop IIPA and this which seemed to defy description but IMO came somewhat near Dogfish 90 min. Listing Here as Strong Ale, Victory is calling it Dark IPA

Like DF 90, this is a big beefy hop bomber that has the substance (Dark malts, body) to carry a lot of hop flavors without making you think of a Pine Mulch Smoothie.

Look....handsome, deep red brown, lets through almost no light, frothy 1 finger head, leaves plenty of lacing. A second pour yeilder more head, still frothy and durable.

Aroma...Here's where Yakima Twilight really gets your attention. Pretty much a full spectrum of whole fresh hop flowers from 4 Yakima varieties...the main point to this show.
Citrus,various forest scents,cannabis resins,some dark roasty malt/coffee,a touch of floral,hayloft and...wow.

Flavor....tastes like what the aroma promised. Some rich malts in mid taste The Hops hit first, evolve and linger on. Pretty much the spectrum of hops tastes,a bit of grapefruit + orange zest at the finish after Juniper-Redwood-Pine lead off.

This bottle is chilled up, yet the aroma+ flavor mix remains potent and charming. There's a little more detail in the malt side as it warms. A great thing though is you can damn near freeze one of these for that muggy 90 degree afternoon, and there's still a LOT of flavor.

Hop Wallop and Storm King don't use the same hops blend but both are also BIG hops. Storm King, the Stout, counters with big complex dark malts...more than this. Hop Wallop stays closer to IPA with lighter, less obvious malts.
Mouth on this is full + hearty The hop oils+ resins linger, the toasted malts add substance. Carbonation is fine and subtle but there in balance.

Drinkability....You sense alcohol without tasting it, but it is in there somewhere.
The special hops showcase stirs the taste buds but "less filling" loses to "tastes great" in this I could do another (easily) because it's yummy, but this wasn't built to be one where you might finish a 6 pack watching a ballgame. It says "more" but also says "no need to hurry"

note...now there is a category for these...Black IPA/Dark Cascadian. I'd like to see it become Dark Bitter Ale,which bypasses the oddity of combining black and pale,as well as the geographic matters of India and the Cascades. While IPA has come to mean a Bitter beer,Bitter does stand on it's own.

Whatever...I like this stuff.

This beer has worked its way into my top 5 beers. I go to Victory Brewpub quite frequently and can't help but order the same beer (yakima glory). a nice use of hops providing a nice scent and taste. i rarely see it on tap anywhere outside of the brewpub but definitely gobble it up if you find it.

Quite possibly my new favorite beer. It's basically a winter version of - to borrow a phrase from Sierra - an Extra IPA. Drinks like an IPA with a dark color and a winter warmer feel to it. I'm going out this week to buy a kegerator so I can have this at home all the time - the cases don't last a week and are getting expensive! I'm a big Hop Devil fan but this just adds a whole new dimension that gives it a leg up - at least until summer comes.
