A - A reddish brown brew with a large frothy head and thick bands of lacing. They don't come too much prettier than this.

S - Grapefruit pith, soap and caramel. Simple, but nice.

T - Delicious hops, an untraceable citrus pith, white pepper, lilies, faint caramel, oatmeal. Very umami.

M - Smooth, medium bodied, mostly refreshing - a teensy bit gummy.

D - Damn good. I will have again for sure. I'm thrilled to still have two left from the six pack after this one. I'd say american black ale isn't really the style though. IPA is more like.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best by 11/30/2012. Pours cloudy dark reddish brown color, with a nice 1-2 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Some nice spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of caramel, biscuit, pine, grapefruit, orange peel, floral, herbal, toasted malt, and a touch of alcohol. Some pretty nice aromas that are very citrus hop forward. Taste of big chocolate, pine, grapefruit, caramel, roasted malt, biscuit, herbal, orange peel, and a touch of coffee. Nice sized bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, pine, citrus, biscuit, roasted malt, and caramel on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance of hop bitterness to roasted malt sweetness. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a fairly creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming after the finish noticed. Overall this is a very nice black IPA. It has a nice roasted malt backbone, which I enjoy seeing in the style; and is very enjoyable to sip on.

[Best served in a Tulip glass]

The pour was a murky mahogany brown with a large (2-3 finger) tan creamy head that was mostly lasting, reducing finally to a thick film and a medium collar with some excellent sticky lacing.

The aroma was of a dark roasted malt, herbal and floral hops with notes of caramel, licorice, citrus (grapefruit), a very mild scent of chocolate and a mild alcohol tinge.

The taste was a little malty and bitter sweet with hints of licorice and caramel from the onset and finished with a nice bold hoppy taste and had notes of citrus, a bit of smoke and a slight notion of alcohol. The flavor hung around for a really nice long time with a pronounced hoppiness overshadowing everything else at the end.

Mouthfeel was medium in body and dry in texture with a solid medium carbonation.

Overall a brew that settled rather nicely on the taste buds, with a good mix of flavors which virtually hides most of the high ABV...

12oz bottle bottle

A- Pours a dark brown color with hints of dark red with a tan head with good retention and lacing.

S- The aroma is malt, caramel and a lot of fresh hops. This is similar to an IPA but it has darker fruitier malts.

T- The taste has a malt presence up front that lasts a split second before the hops kick in and create a long lingering finish. I can pick up hints of coffee flavors in the taste as well. The finish also has a considerable warmth from the alcohol.

M- The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

O- Overall, this was an enjoyable beer. Recommended!

Review from 1/2011 notes. Poured into a Nostradamus flute glass. Pours a very dark red amber. Faint head, but a bit of lacing. Hops and citrus aroma. Nice spicy hops up front, with some citrus and light malts. Pleasant resiny, hoppy bitter finish. Quite a few flavor changes throughout the taste. A fairly complex, interesting hop forward ale. Apparently a renamed Yakima Twilight.

Pouring from a cellar temp bottle into a snifter. The beer pours a deep mahogany hue with a creamy beige head of 3 cm foaming up on a gentle pour. Aroma is some pine sap and grassy hops with just a hint of caramel.
First sip reveals a silky smooth texture and very minimal yet slightly tingly carbonation.
Flavor is a bit of sweet malt and caramel rolls to some pine tree and grass. Finishes very dry with a the slightly astringent bite and also a bit of peppery booze. A nice sipping beer without a lot of complexity. The smooth texture and fairly well hidden booze make it easy to drink.

Poured into hoegaarden mug/glass

Pours a dark amberish brown color, with a nice head and nice head retention as I drink. Smells of hoppy scent with sort of some chocolate, maybe oatmeal type malt. Very different than most beers I have had. Taste different. Mostly hops on the back end, and some up front as well. Can't really describe the malt flavor very well. Can taste a bit of alcohol at the tail end as well. Medium, to heavy body. Low carbonation.
Overall this is a decent beer, nothing I would go out of my way to get though.

A- dark red almost blood color to the beer like a vampire. seems to be very carbonated but we will see with taste.

S- smells pretty florally, with a fruity smell after the floral hop smell. the fruity smell comes along with strong smell that it seems like a combination of fruits to distinguish a specific one from smell

T- Very floral with a semi hop us front taste, and serious floral end. Not much fruitful taste to the beer but non the less a very tasteful feeling throughout. As being a person of not liking hop beers what so ever I am very pleased with this one.

MF- not very carbonated, but if it were more carbonated it would not be as good i feel. Has a medium feel to it but full filling through and through.

O- This beer has not been on my top list of beers as far as hops, I am not a person to buy or consume a more hoppy floral beer, I like the more malt floral beer. But all in all it is a beer that i could enjoy again on a summer day.

Dark, deep ruby color. Good sized foamy head, decent lacing.

Smells rich and malty, with some floral notes.

Quite hoppy but it's very pleasant. Some bright herb flavors and bittering notes that aren't too overpowering. Pretty sweet finish.

Good body and carbonation. Nice hoppy bite to it, but is still pretty drinkable.

This is quite nice. Victory did well with this one, not surprisingly.

Poured a dark, yet clear, brown/mahogany color from a 12 oz bottle, with ABV and 'best-by' date clearly marked on the label.
One finger off-white to mocha colored head that dissipated fairly quickly.
Aroma is a see-saw between rich roasted malt notes and floral hop notes. Nothing too overwhelming, just pleasant aromas coming through.
The aroma definitely leads you into the taste. Upfront there is just a hint of hop bitterness which then gets usurped by the roasted malt. Towards the finish, the malt and hops battle to a truce with both flavors subsiding to a nice pleasant aftertaste. There is a very good balance between the hops and malts.
Not a lot of lacing around the insides of the glass.
Good drinkability and mouthfeel (although at times it feels slightly thin).
Overall this is a very good interpretation of a black ale. Definitely worth a try and comes recommended.

Nice Black Ale..This one is more on the malty than hoppy side but still fairly balanced. Pours a translucent mahogany color, mostly reddish when held to a light. Light tan head, good size and slow fading good retention Significant bands of lace around the glass.

Nose is a bit weak, mostly roasted malts with a little floral thing going on.

Taste is fairly solid. Mostly roasted malt with a significant bitter hops finish. The overall balance is toward the malty side but the hops are fairly pronounced as well.

Mouthfeel is rich but with a crisp hops "bite" at the end. A nice slow sipper that is not too sweet or malty.

12oz bottle - enjoy by nov 2012

More of a dark mahogany than black. 2 finger tan head that dissipates down to a frothy 2cm that laces the glass. Smell is chocolate, malt, and hops. Well balanced and inviting. Taste has the same malt and chocolate as the nose, but the bitter hops dominate- and not in a good way. It numbs the tongue and goes flat.

Worth a try, but something I won't revisit.

On tap at Mccooles.

A- Deep copper color with red hues. This looks a bit like a lager. Off white, slight brown head.

S- I'm left searching a bit here. Hints of hops, and strong carmel roast malt. More of a malt profile in the nose. But the hops are somewhat weak.

T- Starts as a chocolate roasty malt sweetness. Flavor then transitions into a fruity hop profile. Mostly citrus and orange. Then it rounds out with a milky creamy taste.

M- Medium to full bodied brew with medium carbonation. Mouth is up and down. Starts out smooth and rich, then a tingly bitterness, and then smooths out again. Pretty interesting.

O- Definitely an interesting brew. I like the combo here in the taste, but the nose was a bit of a let down.

Pour was a dark ruddy brown with two fingers of light beige head. Good amount of lacing. Nose was powerful citrusy hops, floral bouquet, malt, and a bit of pine. Taste was strong hops, but the malt and citrus mellowed the burst. Very drinkable with nice palate.

Bottle poured into a tulip

A: Pours a hazy amber color with a peculiar tan foam, not particularly aberrant, but pleasing.

S: Smell is faintly hoppy with pine and citrus notes but, more notably, is sweet with orange citrus and white grape juice and supporting maltiness.

T/M: Medium to high carbonation cover the tongue in bubbles and lead to a refreshing earthy, citrus hoppiness. More faint orange fruit accompanies a slightly bitter citrus zest hoppiness while light malt attempts to balance out the profile. Hints of plum and some graininess are reminiscent of a red ale, albeit a hoppy one.

This is a bright flavor for something so seemingly dark.

Reviewed from session notes.

Pours out a dark brown with ruby highlights and a very short-lived collar for a head, minimal lacing. Aroma consists firstly of heavy tropical fruit: Mango, pineapple, and papaya. Medium roasted malt aroma with excellent char / sweet dichotomy in the flavor profile. Minor nutty character appears as well as the glass warms up. Pine resin and grapefruit peel maintain a constant presence throughout. Carbonation levels are slightly low, medium-thick body with a certain interesting level of slick oiliness.

A: Ruby red to slight brown. Huge khaki to slightly mocha 2 finger head. Extremely creamy head. Laces all over glass. Carbonation bubble creep up all sides of the glass. Looks amazing. However, not black! Loses 1 pt. for that.

S: Bready yeast, pine, herbal, slight evergreen, chocolate, caramel, sweetness and a hint of alcohol. All subtle together.

T: Spicy, herbal, piney, huge hoppy notes, bitterness is large, malt, spiciness really comes back, lingering bitterness...does not contain coffee, black patent or any roasted notes. This tastes more like a dark caramel ipa. Not a black ipa.

M: Well carbed. Medium bodied, dry and sweet balance with a lingering bitterness.

O: It's an ok beer. It's not to style. It's more just a big ipa. Hides alcohol well with matched assertive bitterness. This is not a black ipa. This is a brown/porterish ipa at best.

A - a dark red/brown pour with a nice amount of tan head, great lacing on this one

S - sweet malts, caramel, hoppy, citrus

T - toasted grains, caramel, hints of coffee/chocolate, bittering hops

M - very light on the palate, very flavorful, robust - yet smooth going down

O - this is probably one of my favorite victory brews, and is an overall good beer as far as i'm concerned! never really had anything like this before as far as taste/color goes.

Pours a deep ruby red color when held to the light with a half finger of head which recedes to skim but leaves rings of lace on the glass. The aroma is of caramel malt with a nice citrus smell. There is also an earthy nutiness to it. The taste follows suit with a caramel malt backbone up front then a nice citrus hop flavor along with a slight floral hop and a semi sweet dark fruit taste. The mouthfeel is moderately carbonated, but slightly thin. Overall this was a very good beer. Nice aroma and look to draw you in, with a great taste.

On-tap at Loxleys
Served to me in a chilled pint glass. Dark amber in color with a nice head with decent lacing. Smells pretty hop forward with a good bit of pine and mango. The palate is a bit more balanced with some sweet and smokey malts countering the hops. Good amount of bitterness in the finish. All in all this is a good representation of the style but is not a standout.

Growler from Crafty Draught GA

A: red Amber Brown, slight rim of froth
S: Citrus, Malt, Airy, Syrup
T: Malts, nutty, bitter, tobacco back end
M: medium, creamy
O: Bold and bitter, but lacking uniqueness. Good beer, not great for me. Would pass over for something a little less bitter.

Poured into a 9oz shaker

A: Clear body, dark brown with a reddish hue in the light. Head is the lightest shade of khaki brown and fades after a quick minute.

S: Smells chewy, sweet and nutty like an English brown ale.

T: Hop tastes of light pine, like a forest tied in with hints of citrus. Mild malts up front with a sweet nuttiness. Finishes with tart fruits (figs, prunes).

M: Want to chew on the beer like a fluffy pecan muffin. Leaves a tar, sticky feeling on the pallet after each sip. Very unique.

O: Reminds me of Terrapin's Hop Karma just not as intense, more straight forward hop/malt presence compared to a salad of flavors. Another example of Victory defining a beer style. This is a India Brown Ale in my book, not a Black Ale.

Beer pours a nice dark brown, ruby color. Much lighter than I was expecting for a "black" ale. Not much head.

Beer smells piney and citrusy.

Beer tastes very piney on the initial sip, before giving way to a nice, nutty taste. Also, slightly smokey as well.

Beer is a bit more carbonated than I would have liked.

Overall solid black ale.

12 oz bottle into a grand Bordeaux wine glass.
Enjoy By Date: 10/26/12
Puschased from Whole Foods Portland ME

A: brown with amber red hues. 3 fingers of frothy sand-colored head the recedes slowly and leaves great lacing.

S: bright piney hops up front with a solid backbone of malty brown sugar and caramel notes. Cut grass, saginess, roasted malt, a hint of filbert. Complex smell, though a bit sweet.

T: a lot less sweet malt then I would have guessed from the nose. Nice hop piney bitterness, earthy, floral, with a hint of malty caramel, very well balanced. Very good.

M: nice and smooth, no alcohol heat, good carbonation.

O: wow very good ale. The taste wins out on this one. Nose has a lot going on but seems a bit sweet and malty, but wow the taste is very subtle in all regards and finely balanced. Certainly a brew that is approachable and one I could drink a lot of. Recommend.

Sampled from a bottle - best by November 2012. Dark brown in color with deep ruby red hues and good clarity despite the dark color. Poured with a dense, rocky beige foam with good staying power that also left sheets of thick sticky lacings on the glass. Complex combination of dark roasted malt, coffee and chocolate malt aromas along with citrus, floral and and pine hops that intensify as this warms. Rich, smooth feel with aggressive carbonation. Dark roasted and lightly burnt malt flavors up front, floral and citrus hop bitterness from the middle thru to the end. A hint of dark chocolate flavor toward the end as the dark and burnt roasted malt flavor intensify at the finish in combination with a delayed bitter pine hop aftertaste. A multitude of aromas and flavors make this a beer to be sought out.
