12 oz. bottle poured into a Burley Oak snifter

A: Extremely light yellow straw color. Even with a swirl the head is very minimal and dissipates very quickly. Just a bit of a collar.

S: It really smells like a lager with steady farmhouse smell that is a lot of horse blanket, which is amplified by the resonant smells of the lager-esque scents.

T: I've been going through the session IPAs, so why not a session saison. Really weird taste here. Doesn't really come across as a saison, but tasted more like just a standard lager. Just nothing exciting at all here. I barely get any saison out of this.

M: Light and coarse.

O: Not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't this. I will say that it isn't watery at all which is usually the first issue that session beers have to overcome. It seems that tasting too much like a standard lager might be the issue with session saisons.

Served on-tap in a Shaker pint at Beer Run (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Slightly hazy golden with small cap of off-white head with a thin line of lacing around the top of the glass.

S: Very earthy, almost dirty aroma with gritty grainy malty aroma coupled with very earthy, herbal, lightly citrus hop character. The yeast is also high in phenols and lightly medicinal in nature. No alcohol is detectable.

T: Again I have to use the descriptor gritty to describe this beer -- very earthy and herbal in nature with lightly citrus hopping and grainy maltiness. The yeast character carries this beer with a heavy dose of phenols and some medicinal, earthy tones. It is enjoyable, but I doubt I would want to drink two.

M: Very light bodied with high carbonation and crisp feel overall.

O: I liked this beer, but the phenols are pretty hefty by the end of the pint. Perfect for one, but I was ready to move on when it was done. Still, a really nice, earthy, scrappy saison.

Pours a beautiful hazed lemon yellow with about a fingers worth of white foam that fell quickly. Nose is funky with Belgian yeast and has some bright sweet lemon peel. There's a tiny bit of spice on the nose too. Taste is simple and graceful. Bright lemon, a bit tart, on a sweet light dry cracker. Sparkling carbonation and a touch of pepper as it finishes. This beer is everything a saison should be. Has a very pleasant hop herbal on the nose and a bit of spice in the drink. As you drink you will find a delightful tartness to offer just a slight bit of pucker. Has plenty of juicy lemon on the palate and a crisp off dry finish.
