Poured from a cork and cage bomber into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Clear light golden pour with 3 fingers of massive foamy white head. Great lacing.

S: Yeasty goodness... vanilla, oak, white wine... lemon.

T/F: Light grains and Belgian yeast... the 'Golden Monkey' base is present but this is so so much more. The flavor is exceptional... complex and exotic. Grape must and vanilla.. oak character and spice all mixed in with the traditional Belgian yeasts and light lemon citrus of the tripel. Smooth and warming. Boozy but keeps it nicely hidden. The finish is semi-sweet white wine. Flavors more pronounced as it comes up to temperature.

O: Sometimes a beer just 'grabs' you and that's what the White Monkey did to me. Golden Monkey is an above average tripel but nothing earth shattering. This... was just magnificent. I've had it twice and both times just blew me away. one to seek out.

Gold color. Nose is redolent of oaky Chardonnay with a slight bit of funk. Moderate head with lacing. The initial sweetness, reminiscent of apple cider, was wholly unexpected, given the nose. Still a bit of Belgian funk in there, and some golden raisins. Very little discernible hops. Surprisingly smooth, given the ABV; alcohol well masked. Medium body. Nice carbonation. Semisweet finish, with mild drying. Mellower than expected. —Reviewed 2017/08/27

Bottle from March 2014 served in a wine glass.

Appearance: orange honey with a nice firm head. Plenty of sediment.

Nose: Oaky, tropical fruit, vanilla, coconut, grapes, Belgian funk, some tart

Taste: Hmmm, I'd peg this as a funky Brett beer if you didn't tell me otherwise. Tart yet still sweet, tropical fruit, funky, definitely Brett in the mouth, oak, apples, pears, vanilla kinda, little barrel outside the small oak and maybe a little coconut.

Overall: Well, I was not expecting such a unique beer. I can see why Victory aged Monkey in white wine barrels but I feel that it took on too much funk from the bacteria in those barrels and that is almost unavoidable. That being said, it is a nice beer that I would not hesitate to buy again if it was made ever again.

"Since his birth in 1997, our beloved Golden Monkey has remained playfully delightful and profoundly satisfying. His soul continues to glow with the wisdom of ages and inspired our own stroke of genius. Restless from his continuous jounrey to joy, we felt that some quiet time in American oak barrels that once matured white wine would further soothe this ale's silken soul. After his three-month retreat, Golden Monkey emerged refreshed and invigorated with new character and flavor nuances that only make him more profound, and possibly even more playful." Brewed in the style of a Belgian Tripel aged in wine barrels. Available in 750ml. bottles and on limited draft.

Poured from a 750ml. bottles to a tulip glass. Served above degrees Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a crisp, frothy head of a pastel white color over a densely hazy amber body with light sediment and ample, lively carbonation. Retention is below average and lacing is light and spotty. 3

(Smell) Pale malt, malted wheat, cracker malt with a mild sweetness, light yeast profile of trace banana and clove, light earthy spiciness, some grain alcohol. Little notable white wine barrel character, some subtle white grape and drying aroma. Potency is moderate. 3.5

(Taste) Pale, grainy and wheaty malt character forward with a slight cereal grain and toasted malt backbone, light fermented clove honey and very mild yeast character of cider fruit, light grain alcohol, very reserved spiciness and yeast character altogether. Light, vinous white grape character on the finish, slight wood tannins, drying finish. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, smooth, lightly tangy, mildly dry. Carbonation is mild, generating a mild frothiness and a lightly crisp finish. Body is light/medium for the style, medium overall. Balance is slightly sweet over phenolic, bitter and effervescent spice. Alcohol presence is light and there are no off characters. 3.5

(Overall) A fairly simple tripel flavor base certainly leaves opportunity open for barrel treatment to make a significant impact. The inclusion of white wine barrels sits nicely on top of this beer, generating some light tangy white grape character and lightly toasted oak character. It's a decent project altogether, although the simplicity of the Golden Monkey base makes me ponder how much nicer a white wine barrel treatment would have impacted a more flavorful tripel ale. 3.5
