As the microbiotia of the region, divided by France and Belgium, inoculate the vats that traditionally fermented both wine and beer; where one brewed with grain and the other blended of grape- there's really no surprise that beer takes on wine-like attributes. Or as I like to think- those wines taking on beer attributes. Well, if you can't beat them, then join them!

And that's exactly what Victory brewers do as their White Monkey captures the classic look of abbey tripel with a yeast-laden golden hue thwarts a head of both spritzy character and that of cream. With the nose hovering above, its strong vinous grape character is unmistakable, yet even more pronounced due to the ale's strong fruit and spice presence.

Diving into taste, the grape and honey-related grain character blends for a seamless and earthily whimsy. Tangy with, of course- grape, but also citrusy oranges, cidery apple and a melon juiciness round out the middle sweetness. Yet as the corner turns, its spicy white pepper, oak, fennel and cumin balances the fruit and malt with a comfortable calm.

Seemingly vanilla smoothness takes over even as the ale dries to reveal its spicy and warming glow. Tannic oak, grassy hop bite and acute vinous acididty work to dissolve the grain sugars but there's a stubborn malt structure with clove and nutmeg smug that soothes the senses against the brunt of nearly ten percent of alcohol. ...and that's the beer's charm. ...and that's why the marriage of beer and wine works well! ...but only for the skilled and capable brewers.

White Monkey pours a hazy, burnt persimmon hue with a small white ring for it's head. The beverage has a bit of carbonation to it. In the aroma, a certain lactose scent is present, with maple syrup, molasses, and tart apple. Very pleasing. In the flavor, proof of the barrel aging is evident with vinous white wine grapes coming through loud and clear, a subtle spice, and fruit esters (lemon and apricot) from the Belgian yeast. Somehow, there are some rough and bitter hop notes in the finish as well. The Mouth feel is very silky and soft, an incredible feat. The balance of all these components makes this a standout in Victory's catalog for sure.

I like Golden Monkey so aging it in wine barrels just screams for me to buy it! Well, this brew pours outstanding. Cloudy golden body with a nice finger worth of frothy white head. Time to dive in for the aroma! Fruity Belgian yeast with a nice grape musk. Honey sweetness with some oak presence. The flavor is just as the aroma. Nice blend between oak and fruit notes. There's a mild floral with vanilla and faint coconut. Honey sweetness and no booze. This finishes dry and bittersweet. The feel of the brew is Medium-light body, par Belgian carbonation.

Overall: I’m sorry to see this Monkey leave. The flavor profile is strong but the mouth feel makes it easy to savor. Victory is great at making quality brews, and this one should be added to their portfolio. This brew is Recommended.

Rich chardonnay taste. A meal in itself Closer to wine than beer. A lover of golden monkey will enjoy this as well.

Pours a murky honey orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour and funky with malt, honey, fruit, white wine, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly sour malt, fruit, funk, white wine, and wood flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with interesting sour and funk qualities from the white wine barrel aging.

Serving type: bottle.
