Antioch is a blend of ales lying somewhere between the Flemish Red & Oud Bruin styles. Historically it would have been referred to as a “provision beer”, meaning it was stored and aged to allow the flavor to develop.

Antioch (Blend #1) is a blend of several different ales that were aged under different conditions: About 1/3 is a blend of red ales double matured in larger Sangiovese casks, while the other 2/3 comes from various ales matured from 6 months to 3 years in red wine barrels.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle. Blend date of 7/21/21. Blend #5
A - Dark ruby color, steady fine carbonation runs up the glass interior. A steady ring of off white resides throughout the experience.
S - Dark Cherry, plum, cider vinegar, earthy wood, reminds of Malaga, or similar fortified wine. The aromatics are just beautiful.
T - All that fruit in the nose, with more earthy wood threads. There is also more dark fruit here, plum, fig, raisin.
M - Medium in body, rides the sweet/tart line perfectly. The tension between tart or sharp vs, the wine barrel softening is like the two flat sides of your tongue, staring at each other at the prom, waiting to dance.
O - A very good offering, more Oud Bruin than Flanders IMO, the woody, wine aspect, with that lightly tart clean up is just wonderful.

flanders red to oud bruin type sounds about right, blend five on draft at a really cool beer event this weekend. its been fun having all the lager cans come to town, but this is the stuff i am most interested in from these guys, so this was a total treat. long matured in red wine barrels, there is a huge woodiness on the nose to this frothy earthen brick red brew, more bretty funk character too than i am used to in these styles, generally they run more vinegar acidity than wild funk, but this is only tart to me, way more rustic yeast character, some lambic elements to it, fully wild, and i absolutely do not miss a higher degree of acidity. i also get raisin and dried cherry to this, a combination of rich sugary character from the malt slowly broken down and the natural fruitiness of the wine barrels, definite blackberry tones in the flavor too, a fruit leather thing to both senses, plenty of the wine itself in the mix too, wonderful complexity even if i cannot call out a wine varietal specifically through all this funk and tang. i have to assume this is blended from a number of barrels, if not even different base beer threads, seems like they do a lot of that, its so complex and mature to me, woody as anything, farmy, ancient, and uniquely less acidic than many of its peers. nuances of smoke, red apple, fallen leaves, and cooked sugar give it an autumnal even mulled vibe, cherry cordial, cedar, and pipe tobacco also in the mix, and a brilliant and unique fermentation profile overall. one of my favorite beers of the year, and one of the cooler and more distinctive examples of this style ive had in some time...

It pours a slightly cloudy reddish brown that I suspect will clear on warming. There was a nice, tight head that falls to a ring and rafts of very fine foam.

On opening and prior to pouring, there was an immediate fruity smell. Fruity and funky, very much like a wine. Cherry, berry and I'm leaning blackberry, strawberry, plums, very mild Cider vinegar note. Oaky, a bit of caramel. Very pleasant. As it sits away from my face it seems to emit a fruity bubble gum smell as elements combine.

Tart on the taste but I think my tooth enamel will survive - refreshingly tart, not face-peeling. There is plenty of oaky tannin in the taste. Getting cherry for sure and a red wine fruitiness, and I can stick with a little bit of the blackberry but not as strong as the smell. Plums, strawberry, and a nice earthiness. Cidery bite, but not too strong. A little caramel sweetness, and there is a peppery sting on the finish initially. That sting becomes more spicelike - oregano and maybe thyme. Mild to moderate on the funk which ties this thing together nicely. Certainly reflects being aged in red wine barrels, the Sangiovese in particular with the fruity and spicy thing.

Medium bodied, mildly carbonated, finding it quite refreshing. Moderately drying, and moderately acidic.

Very good beer here. The brewery says it lies between a Flanders Red and an Oud Bruin, so I think it actually might lean more to the Oud Bruin comparing the descriptions here with a fairly noticeable oakiness and the fruity esters. Doesn't really matter - it is a well-made, thoroughly enjoyable beer that I am happy to be drinking and call worthy

Blend #3, July 2020 bottling.

This one pours a reddish brown color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like cherry ,juniper, red wine vinegar, oak, caramel, toast, and raisin.

There's a bit of mostly restrained vinegar here, as the style often calls for. It doesn't detract, for the most part. I'd want a bit more malt character, but the barrel is really tasty, with lots of fruit, some red wine, oak, etc.

This is medium bodied, with a soft carbonation, and a medium acidity. It's a slower sipper.

This sort of blended wild ale is the bread and butter of OEC, and they've mostly nailed it here.

L: Pours a deep amber color with a full haze. A gentle pour gives a finger and a half of fine, off-white head that quickly dissipates to a 4 mm ring around the glass with an insubstantial splotchy sheet filling the middle of the glass. The head leaves a light spotty lacing as the beer goes down.

S: At first the nose is a bit subdued, but opens up significantly as the beer warms. I am getting black cherry, light notes of blackberry, a bit of earthy funk, and a bit of oak.

T: I get black cherry, tannic character, hints of dark tobacco, earthy and woody funk, and notes of blackberry on the finish.

F: This one is medium bodied with medium-low carbonation. The mouthfeel has a vinous quality with a nice light dryness on the finish.

O: Very good interpretation of the style. Highly recommended!

Poured from a bottle (blend 2, 15May2018) into a Belgian glass

L: light caramel brown (highland whisky) to a deep red/brown in the glass, solid color. Zero head despite aggressive pour at the end, nice slow bubbles rising faint lacing around the edge

S: really lovely sour nose. Lactic acid, good amount of berries (blueberries/blackberries), dark cherries, slight wine funk. Very inviting

T: follows the nose, led by great acidity and a very refreshing mix of berries/grapes/cherries. Great funk, nice wine barrel character providing additional structure. No alcohol, medium/short finish

F: zero carbonation, drying, medium viscosity

O: homerun beer here, hard to improve much. Incredibly flavorful, perfectly acidic on both the nose and palate. Drying, refreshing, amazing wine character - huge fan

Had this on draft at Bavarian Lodge. Amazing to get OEC in Chicagoland!
L: Pours a medium red, not pink or anything, but not blood red either. Almost no head.
S: Cherry tannin.
T: Sweet cherry, some subtle red wine, without a crazy amount of sour.
F: Not too thin or thick - appropriate for the style
O: Probably my favorite OEC beer.
