Much like drinking a pork chop, the sweet and savory flavor of bock bier sets the stage for the rolling mesquite and hickory character that rolls across the complex and malty lager. Listermann brewers have a huge advantage by picking two highly agreeable styles to frame their Friar Backon smoked bock- the bock beer and the rauchbier.
Not exactly fried bacon, but upon the pour, the lager is impressive. Brilliantly clear with mahogany and cedar hues and a dense marshallowy froth of khaki coloration. Rich smoke and molasses waft onto the senses with hints of pepper, dark fruit, char and coffee. To taste, its the malt that reigns supreme- coating the tongue with savory and elegant brown sugar, toffee, molasses, coffee, nuttiness and toasted breads.
As the sweetness tightens and its sweetness begins to dissolve, the toasted dryness of malt stands tall with toasted grains, pepper, nutty flavors- all inviting the strong smoke flavors that quickly charge onto the palate. Semi-sweet in finish, a cola-like flavor permeates the smoke and offers the unique taste of well marinated meats with the grilled taste of stone fruit and a hint of spiced rum in finish.
Medium-full on the palate, the beer carries a complexity and weight that suggests a bigger, imperial even, strength. Warm and toasty in finish, the beer lingers long with spice cake maltiness and that persistent whimsy of campfire.

On tap at the brewery.

Murky, muddy brown.
It smells like bacon. Juuust like bacon. Yummmm.
Much sweeter than anticipated. It's way more malty and sweet than smoky or savoury.
Smooth and round.
A good beer, but I don't know that I'd want a whole one...

12 oz bottle, poured into a shaker pint at ~40 degrees F.
Appearance: Pours a clear hickory brown, and forms a pale tan head that quickly dies to a cap and ring.
Smell: Char, smoke, grease, and pork, much like the way my smoker smells half of each summer. There's a hint of caramel sweetness underneath the smoke.
Taste: Pork grease and hickory smoke combine to make the first few sips not unlike eating some dry barbecue. As the beer progresses, a caramel sweetness unfolds beneath the layer of smoke, alongside hints of raisin and chestnut. The finish leaves a lingering aftertaste of smoked pork flesh and charred hickory.
Mouthfeel: Medium of body and somewhat sticky, this is a bock.
Overall: Quite enjoyable, and will repeat. It is not quite as good as the Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche, but as this one is listed as a rauchbier, I'll have it rated higher.
