Picked this up the other day as i was getting supplies to brew a couple beers.

Not a huge fan of smoked beverages other than Alaska's smoked porter and a few other smoked porters. So i was surprised when i found myself enjoying this more than i expected to. Smells like smoked bacon right off the bat for me. it marries well with the bock style. very impressed.

Picked this up at Listermann Brewing Co. while I was shopping for home-brew supplies.

22 oz. bomber brown bottle. Poured into pint glass to form a 2" head of off-white frothy foam. The head lasted and lasted as a decent 1/8" cap for the duration. Beer was cloudy and had some minor floaters (bottle conditioned).

Nose: Very apparent smokey scent (like sitting around a campfire). Salty nose as well (Bacon is definitely there)

Taste: Just like the smell... very good. The Malt is balanced well with a slight hops finish.

Mouthfeel: maybe just a tad fizzy for my taste.... but not bad. Not as smooth as I like.

Drinkability: A nice meal in a bottle.... One bomber satisfys.

12 oz bottle, poured into a shaker pint at ~40 degrees F.

Appearance: Pours a clear hickory brown, and forms a pale tan head that quickly dies to a cap and ring.

Smell: Char, smoke, grease, and pork, much like the way my smoker smells half of each summer. There's a hint of caramel sweetness underneath the smoke.

Taste: Pork grease and hickory smoke combine to make the first few sips not unlike eating some dry barbecue. As the beer progresses, a caramel sweetness unfolds beneath the layer of smoke, alongside hints of raisin and chestnut. The finish leaves a lingering aftertaste of smoked pork flesh and charred hickory.

Mouthfeel: Medium of body and somewhat sticky, this is a bock.

Overall: Quite enjoyable, and will repeat. It is not quite as good as the Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche, but as this one is listed as a rauchbier, I'll have it rated higher.

A - Pours a very hazy red with ample white fluffy head that had decent retention and left a decent lacing.

S - Smoke and lots of it, there is the typical pork/bacon aromas along with a malty sweetness.

T - All smoke and meaty notes, the typical pork/bacon flavors with a grilled bbq type flavor that starts strong and mellow through into a nice malty and smooth finish.

M/D - Mouthfeel is about perfect, coats the tongue but still light and goes down smoothly. Very drinkable for the style and worth a look for rauchbier fans.

Poured into a mug from a 22oz bomber.

Pours a very hazy dark brown with a fizzy white head. Fairly decent head retention and lacing.

Smells quite smoky along with some fruitiness reminding me of overripe raspberries. Slightly yeasty as well. I do detect the slightest hint of alcohol.

The taste is almost overwhelmingly smoky at first. After taking a few sips, however, some greater complexities begin to emerge. Hidden behind the smoke is a pleasant fruitiness along with some woody notes. There is a bit of alcohol that becomes noticeable in the finish. The beer is fairly sweet limiting drinkability somewhat.

Overall I am impressed with this beer. I am a big fan of rauchbiers and this one did not disappoint. I wonderful hearty beer perfect for a cold evening.

100th review. super excited to get this. Thanks CMitchell! shocking my landmark review has something to do with pork....

This beer showed up at the house very cold today. I gave it 15 hours to settle in the fridge. Opened it up to a crazy gusher. Lost about 3-4 oz of beer all over my counter. Perhaps it was the extreme temp changes or the stress on route. Whatever, my kitchen smells like bacon so I don't mind.

L- a careful pour yields a dark, caramel amber. foggy and chunky. white flakes dance around in the murky cider like body. a fizzy, noisy, and lively head dissipates rapidly to a thin white film.

S- The smell off the bat is great. I was afraid since this beer emphasized bacon, that it would be like an overly smoked beer that gave a nitrate like amora, but this one is balanced nicely. Road tar, malted barley, honey ham, rubber, and charred hickory. absolutely awesome.

T- the taste is light and pleasant. It reminds me a Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen. Crisp with a silky malt presents.

F- overcarbonated and fizzy, but not stinging or thin.

D- Very high drinkability for me. Very happy I have another one. The taste isn't too heavy, but the smell is dank. I am very glad this one delivered. Bacon beer baby!

On tap at the brewery.
Murky, muddy brown.
It smells like bacon. Juuust like bacon. Yummmm.
Much sweeter than anticipated. It's way more malty and sweet than smoky or savoury.
Smooth and round.
A good beer, but I don't know that I'd want a whole one...

A: Deep mahogany brown. Murky with tan head that fades into white bubbles on the top.

S: Definitely smells like smoked meat. Something sweet in the smell as well, almost like maple bacon.

T: Smokey up front.. this fades to a gentle pleasant sweetness. The finish is a nice long lasting grilled aftertaste. There is almost a Belgian flavor in here, I'll need to get another bottle or two to figure this thing out.

M: Thin to medium bodied, though it feels quite light in your mouth. Carbonation is there, but it is not featured. There is a nice roundness to this brew.

D: Definitely something I would like to get again. I think I could drink a few pints of this, and try to figure it out a little better.
